FROM MEGA-NERD TO SUPER-STUD

Justin Slade and women don't mix, but when he discovers he has the ability to seduce any woman he wants, high school suddenly gets a lot more interesting.

But there's a lot more to the supernatural world than he realizes and what he doesn't know can most certainly kill him in more gruesome ways than he can count.

Sweet Blood of Mine by John Corwin
Sweet Blood of Mine (Overworld Chronicles) - John Corwin

This is one of those books that can be entertaining as long as you aren't looking for some great work of fiction.  The writing was decent, the world building wasn't the greatest, and the characters were fairly well done.  The characters are what held me to this book, having good characters can make even the worst novel bearable for me.

This wasn't the greatest novel so I won't spend too much time on it, but I did want to hit a couple points.

For one, the idea of a teenager outcast who gains supernatural powers is far from original.  Although the supernatural entity that our protag turns out to be is original, at least to me, I've never read a book where the hero is an Incubus.  I'm still not sure how I feel about the hero being a soul sucking demon.  But I guess if vampires can be heroes we should let Incubuses have a chance at the lime light too.

On a whole the book had a shallow feel to it, and there was no clear cut story arc, toward the end some vampires kidnapped his father and he had to mount a rescue, but that only happened in the last hour of reading.

On a whole it wasn't that bad, if you're someone who likes a book with a lot of teenage love/angst drama, this might be a good one for you.  For me it was entertaining, and since I've been in such a horrible slump lately I was able to overlook a few issues to enjoy this book.

Reading progress update: I've read 88%.
Sweet Blood of Mine (Overworld Chronicles) - John Corwin

So far it hasn't turned out too bad, seems we have a protagonist with a conscience, one never knows whats going to happen when a teenager has the power to make woman lust after him.

It's not a great book, but is somewhere between, ehh and good, I'm thinking 2 1/2-3 stars unless the ending wows me.

Very skeptical at 31%
Sweet Blood of Mine (Overworld Chronicles) - John Corwin

Not sure on this one, it's far from being anything deep and meaningful, but has been at least a little entertaining so far.

It's about a nerdy high school kid who realizes he has supernatural powers(super strength and speed that sorta thing).  Weird part is he now see's these "vapors" emitting from everyone he sees, and he can use his own "vapors" to control the other persons emotions.

I wanted to touch it, to make it mine.  A wisp of my own darted from me and latched onto one of those seductive vapors. Tickled it. Her's curled, stretched, and wound itself around mine in a lovers embrace.

Yeah, needless to say I'm a little skeptical about how this is gonna play out.

Sweet Blood of Mine (Overworld Chronicles) - John Corwin

This one was a DNF for me. I tried to persevere, because I wanted to like it, I really did, but I just got too irked by the character, I’m afraid. I also had a few issues with the writing—mostly tense switches and my usual complaints. But the biggest reason I called it a day was because 1), I’d hit 36% and not a whole lot had happened; 2) I then went to check out other reviews and they pretty much all said the same: the best part of the book is the final ¼. I’m sorry but 75% into the book is a long time to ask me to keep going before you catch my interest—so kudos to the readers who pushed through that far to find out; 3) whilst Justin’s personality-doused narration was amusing and chuckle-worthy to begin, its constantness got on my wick after a short while, and I also found that he just wasn’t that likeable a character, so I couldn’t sympathise with him, or bring myself to care about what happened to him—and this is very important to me, personally, if I’m to connect with a book.

So I’ve decided not to continue for those reasons mentioned above. Though, I do urge you to decide for yourselves, as quite a few people have really enjoyed this one, so you may too.
