Loyalty to family keeps this story moving through the secrets.
Bargaining With a Rake - Julie Johnstone

This is a very enjoyable story. A woman, Gillian, who is willing to give up her home and her chance at happiness to protect her sister from a secret. Gillian's loyalty to family despite all the secrets surrounding her endeared her to me. She does what she thinks is right, even bargain with a rake. Alex was a good counterpart with his own dark issues. The narrator, Tristan Hunt, helped bring life and emotion to the characters. I highly recommend this story.

I received a copy of this audio as a gift, and this is my unsolicited review.

great book and great characters
Bargaining with the Boss - Jennifer Shirk

Kinsley was supposed to be moving on as her friend Arden reminded her.  Paul had broken their engagement well over eight months ago. Paul had told Kinsley she was too sensible for him. Paul and Kinsley had been together for five years. Then her brother Wade had sold her birthright  out from under her - the family beachfront hotel called The Harbor Light. The hotel had been in the family for three generations. Wade hadn’t given Kinsley a chance to turn things around. Kinsley was a bridesmaid at  Lori’s wedding and thought maybe it was time to loosen things up as she ordered herself a drink. Then a hot man- Damon- asked Kinsley if she was ok and if he could buy her a drink. Then Damon and Kinsley started doing shots of tequila. She admitted Her ex had dumper her eight months ago and Damon said he didn’t have time for a girlfriend. Tonight Kinsley decided she was going to be party girl Kinsley but just for tonight. Damon was the executive Vice President of an international conglomerate based in New York.  Primarily  dealing with real estate development. Investing sales and marketing and some property management. Kinsley had been their hotel manager since she came home she only hopes the new owner keeps her on. Kinsley had moved back home as Paul had been her boss where she had been an event planner at the Royal Rouge Casino in Conn. Kinsley had experienced so much loss in a short time: her dad. her fiance, and now  the family hotel that had so many good memories. Everyday Kinsley felt like she was losing a piece of herself as well. Then Kinsley woke up next to Damon with very little memory of the night before. That afternoon Kinsley finds out Damon is her boss. Damon was used to being the bad guy; the bad student, the bad son. Ultimately the bad brother. Damon and Wade had been college roommates for awhile. Wade had turned to Damon for help and requested he not tell Kinsley why Wade had to sell the hotel. Damon changed  his plans on going right back tio N Y.  Kinsley had made an impression on Damon personally and professionally. Damon’s brother Carson was dead and when Wade came to Damon for help he couldn’t deny him maybe because Wade reminded him of Carson. Damon had problems saying no to Kinsley and he had never had that problem before.

I absolutely loved this book. And read it in one setting. It was enjoyable, sweet, touching romance.  I loved the plot and pace. I loved Damon and Kinsley together. I loved how Kinsley showed Damon how to open up, how to love and trust her and himself as well. I also loved how Damon’s father opened up to him and helped him to win Kinsley back. I loved the relationships Kinsley had with her friends and the townspeople.  It was an all around good read and I found nothing to criticize and that was great. I loved the characters and the ins and outs of this book and I highly recommend.

Bargaining with the Boss
Bargaining with the Boss - Jennifer Shirk For Kinsley her biggest mistake could turn out to be her greatest gift. Jennifer Shirk can lift a heart and impart wisdom as easily as she can spin a good yarn. Bargaining with the Boss is romantic comedy at it's sweetest. A naughty mistake lands responsible Kinsley in an awkward position. How can the night she can't completely remember, keep coming back to haunt her everyday life? Damon is the man who has a far more intimate knowledge of his employee than he ever thought possible, but can hardly resist wanting more. The surprises in life are what keeps the world interesting and Ms. Shirk takes that advice to heart with a hilariously heartwarming spin on falling in love.

Bargaining for the Billionaire
Bargaining for the Billionaire - J.M. Stewart What makes a family is simple. LOVE! Therein lies the beauty of JM Stewart's Seattle Bachelors series. Maddie, Hannah, Christina, Cade, Sebastian and Grayson have experienced some of the most tragic and ugly moments in their lives. Fate brought these people together at a time when they needed each other most but love was the glue that united these lost souls. Past experiences have broken Gray and Mad's trust in themselves and each other but with a little push from friends these two just may get a chance to mend fences and join hearts. Ms. Stewart combines emotion with lust and creates a ray of sunshine from a cloud of darkness.

Wrap Up: From the Ballroom and Beyond: A Limited Edition Regency Box Set
From the Ballroom and Beyond, A Limited Edition Nine Book Regency Romance Box Set - Julie Johnstone,Christi Caldwell,Jane Charles,Catherine Gayle,Rose Gordon,Ava Stone,Jerrica Knight-Catania,Deb Marlowe,Claudia Dain
A Scandalous Past - Ava Stone
More Than A Governess - Jerrica Knight-Catania
Twice a Rake - Catherine Gayle
The Love List - Deb Marlowe
Bargaining With a Rake - Julie Johnstone
A Reluctant Rake - Jane Charles
His Jilted Bride - Rose Gordon
Much Ado About Dutton (More Courtesan Chronicles) - Claudia Dain
My Lady of Deception (Brethren of the Lords Book 1) - Christi Caldwell

Well, I have certainly learned my lesson - No more box sets of novels unless they are trilogies or less and written by the same author. If I want to go searching for a new author to read, I will stick with anthologies of short stories. There was more downs than ups, although I did find a new favorite author (Deb Marlowe) and two other authors to keep trying in the future (Ava Stone and Jane Charles). I know who to stay away from too, despite their pretty covers with beautiful dresses.

The authors used all self-published works in this box set; some forgot to use a copy editor (and in some cases, story editor) which is one of the standard marks against reading self-published works. I still take the risk of reading self-published works because I never want to miss out on a possible great story just because traditional publishers didn't want to sell it. One thing for self-published authors to keep in mind when adding their work to a box set - use the first story/novella/novel in the series, not one from further down the series!

Another issue I had with this ebook was that there was no way to skip around and read a story from further in the box set; each story had to be read before going on to the next story, so DNF was not much of an option. I wish there was a table of contents that linked a title listed to the page the story starts on.

Here is a recap of my ratings for each book in the box set and a link to the reviews:

1. A Scandalous Past (Scandalous #4) by Ava Stone 2.5 stars review

2. More Than a Governess (Wetherby Brides #2) by Jerrica Knight-Catania 3 stars review

3. Twice A Rake (Lord Rotheby's Influence #1) by Catherine Gayle .5 star review

4. The Love List (Half Moon House #1) by Deb Marlowe 4 stars review

5. Bargaining with a Rake (Whisper of a Scandal #1) by Julie Johnstone 1 star review

6. A Reluctant Rake (Tenacious Trents #5) by Jane Charles 3.5 stars review

7. His Jilted Bride (Banks Brothers Brides #3) by Rose Gordon 1 star review

8. Much Ado About Dutton (More Courtesan Chronicles) by Claudia Dain 0 stars review

9. My Lady of Deception (Brethren of Lords #1) by Christi Caldwell 1 star review

I am so burnt out on Regency romances right now, that is another reason I am glad to be starting MM and OB's Halloween Bingo soon.
