Review: The Deep
The Deep - Rivers Solomon

I'm going with 3 stars because I don't know how I feel about this novella.  I wanted to love it. I didn't hate it.  There were parts that I got lost in.  However, there were parts that lost me.  I own the hard cover, but had to borrow the audiobook from the library to get through it.  Perhaps a re-read at a later date...

Treasure
Ride the Tide - Julie Ann Walker

This is book #3, in the Deep Six series. This book can be read as a standalone.  For reader enjoyment, and to avoid spoilers, I recommend reading the series in the order intended.

Alexis wants Mason and she has made no secret of it.  Her uncontrollable attraction appears one sided, but he shows her repeatedly with though and deed that is not so.  Only they have to dodge attempts on their lives and search for treasure while keeping themselves apart.

Mason has no idea what to do with Alex.  One minute she is the smartest, most beautiful woman he has ever known, and the next she is the most cunning sexpot alluring him with her honest mouth.  Can they survive it all?

The pace of this book moves very fast as there is much inside.  Lots of surprises for the reader, as well as a burning heat between the main characters that may move the reader to need a fan.  The gang is all here in this one, and the new installment is satisfying, if not a slow burn.  I give this a 3/5 Kitty's Paws UP!

In Too Deep (Wildfire Lake, #1) by: Skye Jordan
In Too Deep (Wildfire Lake, #1) - Skye Jordan

In Too Deep by Skye Jordan

My rating: 5 of 5 stars

Jordan is back with a vengeance. The Wildfire Lake series can tempt hearts as easily as it can break them. Laiyla, KT and Chloe start their friendship with a bang and drag our emotions along for the ride. First up is Laiyla's story. In Too Deep is a tale of friendship, a journey of second chances and a look at an enduring love. For Levi and Laiyla, the one that got away could be the start of a new beginning. Despite the bumps and bruises that Ms. Jordan delivers to the heart, she never misses the chance to make hearts smile. Can't wait to see what's next.

Fate
The Mixtape to My Life - Jake Martinez

Justin tends to be inside his head.  Not too many people understand him, and fewer try.  He has a few friends who seem to care.  This year it looks like that may change.  Like everything may change.

Dominic is back and living next door.  The past is catching up to both of them as they realize they may have more in common that they thought.  If he can just tell Justin the truth, and hang on to a friendship that could turn into more, this may be their year.

Characters that move me, well more than one per book is rare.  I found I loved both of this couple as it motivated me to read faster and get to the end.  I was pleased that there was romance, charm, and more among the angst.  So many surprises and a worthwhile read.  Hope we revisit this bunch of friends.  I give this a 4/5 Kitty's Paws UP!

The Deep ★★★☆☆
The Deep - Alma Katsu

This book was kind of a mess. It was intriguing enough to keep me going to the end, but after it was over, my only thought was, "well, that's over". It had so many good reviews that I wanted to like it, but even with a generously open mind, I found it mostly annoying.

The problem, for me, is it didn't know what kind of story it wanted to be. A well-researched,  fictional accounting of true historical events and real historical characters? A ghost story? A mystery? A romance? An unreliable narrator with a disturbed mind? I think it could have been any of these things, and done it well, if the author had just committed to a couple of these concepts. But she tried to do it all, and it just didn't work for me. I spent most of the time wondering what the heck was going on, and not in a good way. Extraordinary amounts of time were spent on characters who weren't central to the story. The narrative continually jumped between characters and tense and timelines.

I'm rating it three stars, because for all its flaws it kept me interested and sort of entertained. Maybe this would have been better in a text version, although I felt Jane Collingwood gave an excellent performance as narrator.
