The Girl They Left Behind
The Girl They Left Behind - Roxanne Veletzos

Natalia was not yet four when the Bucharest Pogroms began, the killing of Jewish families in the streets. Natalia's parents are on the run when they make the heartbreaking decision that will keep both Natalia and themselves alive, they leave Talia on the steps of an apartment building while they escape to a friends attic and then Switzerland. Talia is quickly found and brought to an orphanage where she was adopted into the Goza family. Talia's wealthy adoptive parents, Despina and Anton give her everything she could hope for, they make it through the war only to have the Iron Curtain come crashing down on them. While the Goza's are doing their best to survive with the help of their friend Victor who works for the Party, Talia's birth parents are still searching for her and they might be the answer to Talia's survival once again.

The Girl They Left Behind is an astounding story of hope and courage based on the life of the author's mother. From the beginning when Talia's parents made the heartbreaking decision to leave her on the doorstep, I knew I had to find out the rest of her story. This book explored a part of World War II that I did not know a lot about including the Pogroms and life in Romania during the War. Talia's character showed amazing growth throughout the story, from a scared orphan to a woman taking risks for her survival. I could not imagine being either Talia's birth parents or adoptive parents and having to leave or send away their child for her own safety. I could also not imagine being Talia and knowing that two sets of parents sacrificed everything for my safety. More than anything, I was amazed that the author so very closely followed the story that her own mother had lived through, seeing the pictures at the end of the book really solidified the honesty of the story. Overall, a heartfelt account of remarkable people during World War II and the Soviet Occupation.

This book was received for free in return for an honest review.

The Girl You Left Behind by Jojo Moyes
The Girl You Left Behind - Jojo Moyes

France, 1916. Sophie Lefevre must keep her family safe whilst her adored husband Edouard fights at the front. When she is ordered to serve the German officers who descend on her hotel each evening, her home becomes riven by fierce tensions. And from the moment the new Kommandant sets eyes on Sophie's portrait - painted by Edouard - a dangerous obsession is born, which will lead Sophie to make a dark and terrible decision.

Almost a century later, and Sophie's portrait hangs in the home of Liv Halston, a wedding gift from her young husband before he died. A chance encounter reveals the painting's true worth, and its troubled history. A history that is about to resurface and turn Liv's life upside down all over again . . .

In 'The Girl You Left Behind' two young women, separated by a century, are united in their determination to fight for what they love most - whatever the cost.

The best part for me was a story line about Sophie and Eduoard during WWI. The events kept me on the edge of my seat almost all the time. The struggles of a women forced to live during occupation were represented realistically and it was interesting to see what people can do to stay alive and protect the loved ones.

Also I loved authors choice of connecting two women in two different times periods through a painting, that was painted by Sophies husband Eduoard. And that brings me to a modern day story line about Liv and Paul in which I was a little bit disappointed. I don't say there were something wrong about it, simply for me it dragged too long and wasn't that interesting and gripping.

Talking about the characters I loved Sophie, because she was so strong and brave. Of course she made mistakes, but wasn't afraid to admit it. However Liv, contrary to Sophie, was like a teenager. She just couldn't stop whining about everything that was happening around her and always had to be right, also at some points of the story she looked even paranoid and irrational.

In conclusion I recommend giving this book a chance.

The Girl You Left Behind ★★★☆☆
The Girl You Left Behind - Clare Corbett,Penelope Rawlins,Jojo Moyes

I was expecting another light romance, so I was surprised by such a grim read. This story is really more about coping with loss and persevering in the face of adversity, and contains some strangely joyless and certainly uncompelling romance on the side. It was interesting enough to keep me reading until the end, although most of it was while I was a captive audience for the audio on the long drive home from my family after Thanksgiving.

Audiobook, purchased through Audible. Penelope Rawlins and Clare Corbett provide a very good performance as narrators.

The Girl You Left Behind
The Girl You Left Behind - Jojo Moyes Wow, this is an amazing book. I was not expecting so much of it. I had a good working over of the feels. And now that it’s over, I don’t even know what to think of the roles some of the characters played. This is one of those stories that I’ll loose sleep thinking about at night.

The Girl You Left Behind
The Girl You Left Behind - Jojo Moyes 3.5 stars

Enjoyable story, but not great. Sophie's story grabbed me and the abrupt switch to Liv's tale kept me wondering what happened as bits of the story are doled out in Liv's research about the painting.

Liv's story was less gripping and things wrapped up too neatly in a not quite believable, made for the movies type ending. I also found Liv to be not that likable or relatable in her laser focus to hang onto the painting regardless of the consequence.
