Open Book
Open Book - Jessica Simpson
I Picked Up This Book Because: Curious.

The Story:

This book seemed very open (duh) and emotional. There is a lot revealed by Jessica in these pages. Abuse, heartache, the break up of her family and her marriage, and so much more. I wasn’t expecting so much though I really didn’t know what to expect now that I think about it. I found myself very emotionally wrapped up in her story.

The Random Thoughts:

While I appreciate her sharing her new music 6 songs was too many.

Snakes and Ladders Progress Update: Roll #9
Open Season - C.J. Box,David Chandler

I’m sorry to report my lovely snake charmer let me down this roll. :( Tossing two dice gave me a six which meant I landed on square #65 and a snake. Boo! I slid back down to square #52 where the prompt says to read a book with a tree or flower on the cover. I chose "Open Season" by C.J. Box which has some dreary looking tree trunks on the cover, and I wasn't all that impressed with the story, either.  Granted it’s the first in a series, but I had some issues with the main characters, and a number of scenes felt like they were written for shock value which didn't work for me. I suspect Box was trying to up the suspense factor or possibly appeal more to male readers. Anyway, I would have preferred to have seen the climatic scene with the culprits play out differently, and I kinda felt Box's portrayal of Joe Pickett's wife veered into sainthood territory by the end. The second book in the series is buried in my TBR pile, but I'm not in any hurry to read it.

Do Not Open This Math Book
Do Not Open This Math Book - Danica McKellar
I really enjoyed this beginning math/subtraction book. Although geared towards elementary children, I think this book has potential for anyone struggling with the basics of addition and subtraction. Working with students from kindergarten through 6th grade and some struggling adult learners, I think this book is a gem.

What makes this book fantastic in my eyes, is the way the concepts are presented. There are great visuals displaying the information and fantastic ideas to help bring the concepts to life. Danica’s language that she uses to get her point across in this book is fabulous. I found this book entertaining and educational, and although some concepts she builds upon immediately, sometimes she leaves a concept and later comes back to it adding to it.

From adding basic numbers together to subtracting two-digit number, Danica shows how to do that visually and by reading this text, it seems as if she’s right there beside you. There’s a cute, little mouse as Danica sidekick in the book, who is reluctant to learn but with Danica’s help, he starts to learn and is successful.

There is a section on place value, fact families, mental math, regrouping, and then subtracting with borrowing. Like I mentioned before, she starts out basic and moves into more complex material but it’s a gradual shift. The books language is positive and in reading the book, it’s as if you had your own teacher right there with you explaining the concepts. I think using this book with a child would be very beneficial and for children who can read, the ability for them to work through this book on their own would be valuable and an accomplishment. There are games, exercises and lots of examples inside this book.

Thank you, Danica, for creating this book, what a terrific book teaching these concepts. I highly recommend checking out this book.

Excerpt: (how readable and positive the book’s language is) “Just so you know, the whole point in moving the buns to “fill in a tin” is so we can turn these problems into the easy ones we saw on the chart on page 26, like 10 + 5 = 15 and 10 + 6 + 16. By filling the tins wherever we can, we’ll be making the problems easy, like magic.”

Gaming Book out in June about Elf Warfare
Elf Warfare (Open Book) - Chris Pramas,Hauke Kock,Darren Tan

Disclaimer: ARC via Netgalley

My love of elves dates back to the first time I read Lord of the Rings.  It was because they were ageless, spoke funny, or seemed so wise.  It was because they used bows and arrows.  This is because one of the first movies I ever saw was Robin Hood.  Honesty, if the orcs had been as skilled with bows as Robin was, I would be constantly wondering why everyone painted those poor, misunderstand orcs as evil.

                It’s true.

Osprey’s book about Elf Warfare written by Chris Pramas taps into the fascination that many people have with elves, whether or not said people only like them because of the Robin Hood collection.  The book is ideal for any gamer or writer.  Osprey presents the various fighter types as well as various battle formats.  It is in one part source book and one part history, with a sprinkling of storytelling thrown in.

Highlights include a nice bit about how elves work with allies- be they human or animal and a detailed discussion about how elven armies and how they are designed.  There is at least one illustration that looks like it was Bloom’s Legolas inspired, and one does wonder a bit about some of the Elven women’s battle dress.  But those are quibbles.

It is a quick fun read that can spark creativity.

One day you held my hand. One day you loved me.

Then you were gone.

At sixteen, I lost the only love I’d ever known. Thrown back into the foster system, pregnant and alone, I prayed that you’d come for me and save me from life’s cruelties. Only the next time I saw you, it was too late.

Doing what I needed to do to provide for my son, we were finally brought face to face. It should have been the best day of my life, but it was far from it. It was the worst.

That day a monster took me and held me captive.

I begged for my life. I prayed for my son. I dreamt of you, the memories keeping me alive.

You finally came for me. You were my heart. My Salvation.
But sometimes the heart is too damaged, too broken, to be saved.

And sometimes monsters have a way of coming back to haunt me.

*This is a dark story. It is intended for mature audiences. If you need a trigger warning then this book isn’t for you. I have other books of mine that I’d recommend like Current or Tainted by Crazy, but not this one.

Our Review
Gunner and Charlotte

This is our first time reading this author and I am happy to say that we enjoyed our first read by them.We will be looking forward to reading more in this series for sure.

We love reading about those sexy bad boys and those hot as hell bikers they always take care of that fix for us.We always enjoy finding new authors to help with that addiction of them and we are glad to have come across this author to feed our needs.

Gunner and Charlotte were high school sweethearts. They have developed a deep connection between one another the kind that lasts a lifetime. Unfortunately life gets in the way of their happily after ever. Will these Soul Mates find their way back to one another?

I have to say that I loved the story cover to cover.I will point our that it is not a story for the faint of heart. The story contains rape, torture, human trafficking all done by the worst kind of monster which made it such a heart wrenching read.I have to say that this story touched my emotions on so many levels and at times made me a bit nervous and afraid of what would happen next.I cannot imagine how Charlotte survived the horrific things that were done to her.I takes a very strong person to survive and Charlotte's main focus had always been about getting back to her son.Love is what motivated her to survive and perhaps stay sane and hopefully survive the aftermath of it all.

I admired Charlotte as she was always a survivor even since childhood.I love how she was a strong and loving and giving mother.I loved the bond that she had with her son and that of Gunner. My heart broke for the things that Charlotte endeared her entire life.I loved how she survived to become a survivor and not that of a victim. I love how her heart always belonged to Gunner even though they were apart.I love reading about a couple that their love survives the test of time.

I alway pick a favorite character in a story and mine this time around is going to be Gunner.I picked Gunner because he surprised me most about what he felt ,how he acted, and how he followed through with things.I love how he never gave up his search for Charlotte and how he never stopped loving her.I loved that fact that his heart had always belonged to her whether they were together or apart .All these things surprised me the most because of the way he chose to live his current life. His heart always remained opened and never became hardened or jaded unlike most men who chose that kind of life he led.I loved that about him the most.I loved how furiously he loved Jade and that of his son and the lengths he would go to kept them safe.

Gunner was very intense,dangerous,serious,edgy,handsome,love-able all wrapped up into one bad boy package that us girls can't help but fall for.I loved the chemistry between Charlotte and himself it made for some very hot sexual encounters.

I enjoyed this story and all its character's.I love when you are able to connect with the characters that you read about and I was able to do that. The different personalties of the other MC members added to making story a bit more lighter especially when a plot is riddled with pain and suffering.I was engrossed in the plot and that of its characters from the very first pages.I loved that once I started reading the story I couldn't put it down.I loved how intense the story became with its twists and turns it took and I loved that fact that a couple so in love were able to find each other again and get a chance for their Happily Ever After. The story kept you on edge the entire time with anticipation of what would happen next as the secrets kept coming to life one after another. This was definitely a story that you could not help let it affect your heart strings as it did to mine.I loved this intense love story with all of its twist and turns it made for a very enticing and an engrossing read.

A recommended read to all !
