(Audiobook) The Turn of the Screw
The Turn of the Screw - Henry James,Richard Armitage,Emma Thompson

aka Words, Words Everywhere.

I've read my share of VIctorian Era writing, so I am quite familiar with just how wordy it can be. But this...this was beyond. Honestly, had I been reading this as opposed to listening to it I'd have DNF'd it for sure. Even with the superb narration, there were a few times I had to back up to listen to a passage again.

As for the story itself...it was okay. I like--and yet also find it quite maddening--that the story is left open to interpretation. And I'm not quite sure just what I think actually happened just yet. I waffled back and forth while reading the book, but have no firm thoughts as of now.

Anyway, 2 stars for the story itself, and the extra star is for Emma Thompson's excellent narration.

Second Bingo!
Vampire - In the Beginning - Charmain Marie Mitchell
The Werewolf Whisperer: ¡Feliz Navidad! (A Werewolf Whisperer Novella Book 1) - Bonita Gutierrez,Camilla Ochlan
Cabal - Clive Barker
The Turn of the Screw - Henry James
The Day of the Triffids - John Wyndham

Yay! Second row down, at last.

Most of these weren't among the best books I've read for Bingo, but Cabal is good and Day of the Triffids was fairly good. The rest, meh.

The Turn of the Screw
The Turn of the Screw - Henry James

by Henry James

After reading the first couple of chapters, I actually went onto Wikipedia to find out what this story is about. I felt like I had come into the middle of something that hadn't been explained.

This is actually not unusual for stories written around the turn of the century. They have the wordiness of Victorian novels but often jump into the action without much explanation. I hadn't read James before and doubt that I will read anything by him again. I'm glad to have tried another well known author, even if he isn't going to be of further interest.

I found the story very difficult to get into. The dialogue sounded like everyone was in a perpetual state of surprise, the characters were not distinct and the plot seemed to take far too long to progress. For a short book, that's not good. The description had sounded really good. I'm just not at all impressed with the execution. Reading felt like more work that ploughing through a long Dickens book.
