What kind of superpower do you have?
El Deafo - Cece Bell

El Deafo by Cece Bell is the autobiographical account of the author as a little girl after she contracted meningitis and became deaf. First point in this book's favor: The illustrations are absolutely delightful. If you were a fan of the Arthur cartoon growing up then you'll love her artistic style as it's very reminiscent of that. (The characters are all rabbits.) She focuses primarily on her experiences using the different hearing aid devices that she had growing up and how isolated it made her feel. Bell doesn't shy away from exploring her shame and 'otherness' in comparison to her family and friends which I think is refreshing in a middle grade book. The way that Cece ultimately copes with the changes and difficulties that she's experiencing is by creating an alternate persona where she uses her deafness as a superpower. (Check the picture below for an example.) I personally really loved the references of such classics as Batman (with Adam West) and one of my faves M*A*S*H. I don't know that younger readers will appreciate that as much but I thought it was a great touch. Included at the end of El Deafo is a little informational blurb about Deaf culture so if parents are reading with their kids (or teachers with their students) it makes a really awesome learning tool. I loved that kids are getting to see a character using a hearing device in a medium that is easily digestible and conveys the message that no matter what our abilities we are all 'super' in our own ways. 9/10

An example of the art writing style. [Source: Goodreads]

If you don't follow me on social media you may have been surprised/confused when I started posting a new review every day this week. I did this because I didn't want to play catch-up like I did earlier this year with books I've finished but not yet reviewed. However, I'm not seeing a ton of engagement in these posts so I want to get your opinion. Are you enjoying the more frequent posts or do you prefer once a week and you don't care when they go up? Please comment below with your thoughts! :-)

{ s(Q|X) = -K SUM(p*ln(p)) }: "Symbols, Signals and Noise" by J. R. Pierce
An Introduction to Information Theory: Symbols, Signals and Noise - John Robinson Pierce

(Original Review, 1980-12-05)

Final answer to question, "How many joules to send a bit?"

The unit of information is determined by the choice of the arbitrary scale factor K in Shannon's entropy formula:

{ s(Q|X) = -K SUM(p*ln(p)) }

If K is made equal to 1/ln(2), then S is said to be measured in "bits" of information.

Reading progress update: I've listened 583 out of 4260 minutes.
Sherlock Holmes: The Definitive Collection - Arthur Conan Doyle,Stephen Fry

"I fear that it may be the last investigation in which I shall have the chance of studying your methods. Miss Morstan has done me the honour to accept me as a husband in prospective."
He gave a most dismal groan.
"I feared as much," said he. "I really cannot congratulate you."
I was a little hurt.
"Have you any reason to be dissatisfied with my choice?" I asked.
"Not at all. I think she is one of the most charming young ladies I ever met and might have been most useful in such work as we have been doing. She had a decided genius that way witness the way in which she preserved that Agra plan from all the other papers of her father. But love is an emotional thing, and whatever is emotional is opposed to that true cold reason which I place above all things. I should never marry myself, lest I bias my judgment."

There is so much to unpack there. Holmes regard, then the stab at love, and his stance on marriage, half sad, and also, half romantic, because not said there is that for him, marriage is for love *grin*

"The division seems rather unfair," I remarked. "You have done all the work in this business. I get a wife out of it, Jones gets the credit, pray what remains for you?"
"For me," said Sherlock Holmes, "there still remains the cocaine-bottle."

I will forever wince at those last lines. I'm aware that in context, the opium and cocaine thing is akin to chain smoking and monster espressos/energy drinks, so it's not exactly the jolt of time marching on, but this full circle we make with the beginning. He lives for the mystery and is truly alive during the case. It's brilliant to see, but sad, and lonely.

Also, I've seen a lot around about Holmes being a depiction of a manic-depressive, but I wonder. He's very trigger-orientated on his phases.

Onto the short stories now

Reading progress update: I've listened 420 out of 4260 minutes.
Sherlock Holmes: The Definitive Collection - Arthur Conan Doyle,Stephen Fry

Two things:

"Go on, you drunken vagabond," said the face. "If you kick up any more row, I'll open the kennels and let out forty-three dogs upon you."
"If you'll let one out, it's just what I have come for," said I.

I love sassy Watson. I think people forget that part about him, much like his intelligence, or maybe just plain ignore, given the usual portrayals on more contemporary media, and the contrast with the mysterious genius that is Holmes mind.

Also, I keep laughing at this repeat of Holmes' name opening doors. Lots of friends and respect from strange quarters.
