The Spectacular Now - Tim Tharp
“you're nothing but a product. and what's this product called? emptiness, dude, that's what it's called. and for the rest of your life, they sell you over and over, right to the end when they package you one last time and plant you in the ground.”

usually when a book is popular, i don't expect very much from it because i'm a very grumpy, contrary person but this is one of those books that i actually understand why it's so popular. if anything, i don't understand why it's not more popular. i'm not sure how to talk about this without spoiling things, but i will say that i think everyone should at least try to read this book. it has a lot of drinking and partying and sex, and i suppose there's some glorification of those things, but this is a powerful book, and it speaks honest to god volumes about how scary and shitty and amazing growing up is, and how it feels to not be good enough for the people you love the most, and how it feels to lose your friends and just... growing up. this book is a flawless example of growing up. that's all there is to say.

The Spectacular Now - Tim Tharp Eh, it was okay.

I just didn't care. Sutter was a bit of a jerk, but you could see why, but it never really mattered that you could see why. Amy was just a wet noodle. She just goes from a complete wet noodle to a wet noodle who relies on her boyfriend to fix all her problems. Sutter's friend is also a jerk and his girlfriend Beth is annoying. Sutter's ex-girlfriend Cassidy is probably the best thing about this book and I wish the book had been about her instead of stupid Sutter.

And on and on and on.

There was some nice writing, I guess. But I felt like I'd have been better off rereading The Catcher in the Rye. Holden's also a jerk, you know, but the writing was much better.

The Spectacular Now - Tim Tharp

Life is fun; life is more enjoyable when you’re drinking or when you’re drunk according to Sutter.  Drinking for Sutter is a hobby, it opens the world up for him, he sees things in a whole new light, he discovers new possibilities, Sutter is an alcoholic but he doesn’t see it that way. We all know a Sutter, he fun and he’s full of stories, his life is exciting and he’s easy to talk to. The character of Sutter was so enjoyable and entertaining and yet so heartbreaking. I loved him for his upbeat nature, his outgoing personality and his energy. His energy could fill a room. The incident at his sister’s house with the expensive brandy and the closet fire, I thought this might be a turning point for Sutter but it just added another story to his collection. A boy does Sutter have the stories. It takes a lot to change someone who is flying higher than a kite. When Aimee finds him passed out a lawn while delivering morning papers, she’s just trying to help him out. Returning the favor, Sutter takes Aimee under his wing hoping to find a guy to bring her out of her shell. His latest matchmaking effort, his best friend Ricky was a success, only he’s lost his drinking buddy now. You’d think losing your drinking buddy would slow Sutter down but it doesn’t. Aimee’s always been a good girl and when the Sutter and Aimee start to hang out, Aimee starts to change. The warning signs aren’t good and I cling to the notion that things will turn around and she just might be the key that Sutter needs. As Sutter hunts down some male prospects for Aimee, Sutter finds in Aimee things he was missing, things his previous girlfriends never provided but is it the things he is really looking for. Sutter is hard, he is living the dream (or at least his own dream) and he is the only one who can decide what he really needs.
