Early Review: Colors of Us (McAvery Brothers #1) by Sandra Bunino
Colors of Us (McAvery Brothers Book 1) - Sandra Bunino

~*~ BLURB~*~

Everything she knew to be true fell apart. Then fell apart again…

Michelle Willis is running from her past. What better place to hide than in the anonymity of New York City. Finding refuge in a tiny SoHo art gallery, she rebuilds her life one painting at a time.

A wrong turn sends Hunter McAvery on a crash course with disaster. He fights his own demons by following his big brother’s lead – drinking and bed-hopping his way through Manhattan.

A glance at Michelle’s self-portrait triggers emotions Hunter can’t tamp down. Driven to meet the artist, he discovers a fiery chemistry as their lives collide. But when their past threatens to tear them apart, can their love survive?

~*~ MY REVIEW~*~

I've read several, if not all, of Ms. Bunino's books but haven't come close to loving any of them as much as I loved this newest one. This was a great introduction to the McAvery brothers, Hunter and his older twin brothers, Alex and Liam.

Michelle was introduced to us as a somewhat broken character. She had no family, she often had nightmares, she never took the subway, she didn't socialize, and her only friends were Chey and Miranda from the gallery. Eat, sleep and work were all she knew. And then a sexy, tattooed bad-boy walked into her life. I loved the heroine from beginning to end. Her past was revealed slowly, but she didn't elicit feelings of pity, nor did she speak to the people she came into contact with any discernible reservation. On the surface she appeared normal. Despite having a player-type show an interest in her, she didn't run away from him, but she didn't make it easy for him to get to know her either.

Hunter was a more complex, tortured character. He suffered from survivor's guilt over the loss of someone close to his heart. Hunter then followed in Alex's footsteps, drinking and sleeping his way through women, to escape his demons. By the time he met Michelle, he'd somewhat got his act together. It became evident that he wasn't really the player type. Of all the brothers, he was the softer one, the one most likely to make something more of himself. Throughout the story, he struggled heavily with moving on. Not just from the past but also getting out of the bar life and going back to his old job. I felt sorry for Hunter when Alex kept reprimanding him for something or other, or when Michelle kept catching him with some woman hanging over him. My heart broke for Michelle in those moments, and I wanted so badly to smack him upside the head.

If you're expecting a lot of sheet-gripping, sweaty sex from the get go, you'll be disappointed. Their attraction was instantaneous, but the progression of their relationship was a very slow burn. They got carried away a few times, but it never led to more. Instead, you're in for a wonderful development of a friendship where they opened up to one another about their ghosts, Hunter helped build her confidence through boxing, and whenever he f*ed up, she allowed him to explain himself. The sheet-gripping didn't happen until near the end, but it was so worth the wait and suited them perfectly. The ending was a tear-jerker. That had to be the saddest "ending before they even began" scenario I'd ever come across. But don't worry, these kids eventually got their act together for their HEA.

Alex turned out to be a decent guy in the end, and the tension with Miranda has me excited for their story.

“I don’t want to be seen as the girl with the problems. That’s why I moved to New York, to blend into the scenery. To be that nondescript person you forget the moment she’s out of sight. As soon as I unload my issues, I become the girl with issues."

“I’m trying like hell not to kiss you.” Hunter straightened his back but didn’t loosen his grip on her arms.

Her skin prickled from the nearness of his body, and she let her gaze drift to his lips. “Why?” she whispered.

He blew a slow breath between his teeth. “Nothing good would come of it. I’m not capable of giving or feeling… or offering much to you right now.” He shook his head but didn’t move from her body.

“Kiss me, Hunter.” Raising her lashes, she dared to look him in the eyes, almost afraid of what she’d see.

“You don’t understand. You’re too… good.” He averted his gaze.

“Maybe you should let me decide what’s good for me.”

“I want you more than I have anyone or anything in my life. I can’t promise you anything past this minute. So say the word, and I’ll walk away. But if you let me in, I promise to love you like you deserve. I plan to explore every inch of your body, to learn what makes you sigh and moan.”

A Good Sub Would... by Sierra Cartwright

Genre: BDSM Erotic Contemporary

Shelby, a wanna-be sub, hasn’t found a Dom strong enough to push past her need to be in control. Her experiences as a sub have been yawn-inducing. She’s fantasized plenty, though, about Trevor Lawton, one of Dark Haven’s legendary, mouthwateringly firm Doms. As the stakes get higher at the charity poker match, Dom Trevor Lawton is fascinated by the woman kneeling across the table from him. Problem is, she’s not a good sub. Oh, she tries, and she’s lovely. But she’s not very good at following orders. The woman needs a firm, unyielding hand…his.

Hunting Holly by Belinda McBride

When Holly left the Truckee pack, she left her family, her safety, and the two men she loved. Now she's in San Francisco training as a Domme at Dark Haven. She thinks she's found herself, but tonight, Tex and Hunter have found her. And they are not happy with their little wolf. She's been keeping secrets from them. Tonight, someone's gonna beg.

Welcome to the Dark Side by Cherise Sinclair

Genre: BDSM Erotic Contemporary

Real Doms terrify her, so Summer plays with lightweights only. And only in the safety of her club, Dark Haven. But on Western Night, the tough cop who wins her in a sub-roping game is as powerful as they come. Virgil's first taste of BDSM was disturbingly enticing. Hoping to burn out his interest, he visits an infamous San Francisco club, where he wins himself the prettiest little sub he’s ever seen. He’s in a quandary. A man shouldn’t render a woman helpless, let alone spank her ass. But the nervous little submissive clearly loves being in his ropes. Her need to be controlled is as powerful as his need to control. So he indulges himself, and her. That one night could be the beginning, but instead it's the end. She won't play outside the club and he lives too far to come play. He'll just have to find a way to forget her...or get her in his ropes to stay.

Publisher's Note: All of the stories within this anthology contain explicit sexual content, graphic language, and situations that some readers may find objectionable: strong BDSM theme and elements (including/not limited to: bondage and spanking).

My Review

Fantastic world-building, humorous characters and dialogue. The Grim Reaper delivers la petite mort like no other!

This was my first Marie Hall book, but Death's Redemption was fantastic! I didn't feel as if I was missing any pertinent information about this world or the characters in it. This book had everything that makes me fall in love with a story like this: a hero and heroine who argue all the time as a means to divert the sexual energy swirling around them, humorous dialogue, funny situations, a bit of mythology, danger and suspense, and scorching hot sex.MRR Recommends Top Pick25

I absolutely adored this pairing of Frenzy aka Death aka The Grim Reaper and Mila, the Seer. Mila was feisty and stubborn, and I loved that the angrier she got, the more pronounced her brogue became. She was stubborn and had quite a temper on her. But Frenzy matched it with his own stubbornness and the endearing quality of not knowing how to deal with humans in general. There may have been some Fae arrogance involved as well. Despite the verbal sparring, they could be mature and had the decency to apologize when either one of them was in the wrong. I really enjoyed the natural and believable progression of their character arcs. It took Mila quite a long time to accept her new reality and let go of the past. Frenzy's blunt but honest approach wasn't always the best way, but it allowed for some great moments of compassion and nurturing to come forth.

Frenzy tried again, but not even a flicker of awareness crossed her face. “You have been such a pain in my ass,” he growled, and then sighed. “And I’d be really pissed if you left me now.”

The suspense was really good, killing methods were graphic enough to be effective; just the right amount of wickedness and gore. Frenzy's methods were at times rather sexy. The sex scenes were scorching hot, especially their first time. Well, every other time after that as well. If you're familiar with the Ascension series by Caris Roane, or Kresley Cole's Immortals After Dark, then you'll love this. The story flowed nicely and was well paced. I was flipping pages well into the wee hours of the morning. I will definitely check out the first book and follow the rest of this series. I can't recommend this highly enough.

Hook Scenes (aside from the sex)

“Is that the way it’s gonna be with us, then? You say no, I say okay?” she asked in a low, heated whisper, because if she said it any louder she’d scream and act like a raving banshee.

Giving her that wicked smile of his again, he didn’t say another word. But he didn’t have to.

“Chauvinistic pig,” she spat. “If I’m such a nuisance, why’d ye save me, then?” Mila had worked hard at softening the hard brogue, and slipping up was a sure sign she was seconds from completely losing her head.

“It’s bloody Mila!”

Upper lip curling, he lifted her in his arms until they were nose to nose. “Stop feeling sorry for yourself.” And then he unceremoniously dumped her.

Forgetting herself, she turned toward him and her eyes bulged. “You’re naked!”

“It’s what one tends to do in their home when it’s time to sleep,” he growled, now beginning to visibly get upset. And it seemed the more upset he got, the harder he got. His cock was long and quickly turning rigid.

She tried to look away without seeming like it affected her, but she knew her eyes were enormous in her face and her heart was definitely doing a strange stuttering.

“Stop acting like such a virgin. This isn’t for you.”

My Review

Read June 21st-June 21st

I am obsessed with this series! I feel that Ms.Kay has found the perfect balance between action and romance with this third book in her Solsti Prophecy series. I loved the prior books as well but felt that the sex overshadowed the fantastic world she'd built for her characters. This time around, it was just right. Each book in this series can't stand on its own. There are a lot of characters, different species, and some secrets that started in book one are slowly rolled out and revealed as each book comes out. To read them out of order would mean spoiling quite a few story lines.

Out of all the couples so far, MRR Recommends Top Pick25I think I love Gin and Mathias just a little more than the others. Gin wasn't as bad as I thought she might be after reading about her from her sisters' POVs. I feared that she was going to be a timid heroine with a stubborn streak to rival those of Nicole and Brooke. That wasn't the case. Her character arc was so well developed that I understood why she had wanted to distance herself from the crazy world her sisters had embraced, and why she feared her abilities so much. It was very well explained, and above all, believable. I loved her spunk when it showed. I think my favorite thing about her was that she was a brainiac, but she was also very sensual. As for Mathias, where should I even begin? He's a demon, he's sexy, protective, but what I loved about him most of all were his communication skills (when he wasn't omitting the truth about who and what he was in the beginning). Actually, they both were quite mature about talking to one another throughout the story and each of them showed a nice amount of confidence around each other. He was also incredibly encouraging and sensitive when it came to helping her with her power. Their relationship progressed as naturally as it could under the circumstances. It wasn't too fast, and she wasn't exactly shy or guarding her heart against a past hurt. The sex was off the charts hot. Ms. Kay sure knows how to write some intense love-making scenes. The paranormal aspect always delivers a healthy dose of heat and *cough* size.

“You’re so big.”
That wasn’t the first time he’d heard that. Some females couldn’t take his entire length. He hooked one arm under her leg, lifting it wide. Her sex glistened in the dim light. Hell, she was ready. “I’ll go slow.”

There was no shortage of action in this third installment, and all of it exciting, very descriptive that I could picture every single moment. There wasn't a boring moment that made me want to skip ahead; one event flowed into the next at a good and steady pace. It took me a moment to catch on to one seemingly out of place POV until the truth smacked me in the face. I hope the next story will involve The Thief and Caine. I'm positively giddy to find out how The Thief ended up where she did, and how the Solsti will react. My only (minor) complaint was the over-use of Gin's unique scent.

If you've enjoyed Larissa Ione's Demonica series, Gena Showalter's Lords of the Underworld series, or Kresley Cole's Immortals After Dark series, then this series is for you. I highly recommend checking out this series.
