We Have Always Lived in the Castle
We Have Always Lived in the Castle - Shirley Jackson Wowzers! Ms. Jackson does not disappoint. I watched the film first and loved it. Great caset; excellent story. They did the book justice.

So very dark and mysterious. Sisters and their invalid uncle living in the family home. The town hates them for their wealth and because one of the sisters allegedly murdered of the rest of their family. The whole family is clearly traumatized from the deaths of their family years prior and they live as shut-ins in their home.

A visit from a sistant familt member throws things upside down for the family of three. And because of shenanigans, the house catches fire. A good bit is destroyed and rhenthe rest of the hateful town helps the fire by attacking the house they've always been so envious of. Just horrible people ina vicious, violent frenzie leavint the sisters hiding until they've all gone.

The whole thing was mysterious, strange and very sad. A very good read and I look forward to working my way through the author's catalog.

We Have Always Lived in the Castle
We Have Always Lived in the Castle - Shirley Jackson,Thomas Ott,Jonathan Lethem This book left perturbed, very perturbed but I liked still.

Guess this is a good book for the time of the year? (Not when I read it but when it was reviewed after I noticed something had made this book disappear from the reading challenge).

So read 3-4 July 2019

We Have Always Lived in the Castle
We Have Always Lived in the Castle - Shirley Jackson It was weird and I couldn’t stop reading. It’s a good book but I’m not sure I liked it. And that’s all I can say about this book. I’m not even able to rate it.

You never should trust kids
We Have Always Lived in the Castle - Shirley Jackson

This is like a demented Grey Gardens or something.

The plot is rather simplistic, so what basically gets you is the mood and atmosphere.  Like some of Jackson's other works, it considers the cost of rumor and gossip on a family.  Merricat lives in a house in a middle of a wood with her uncle and sister.  All the rest of her family died as the result of eating blackberries and sugar.

There is also a cat.

Nothing bad happens to the cat.

What happens when a cousin who thins there might be riches shows up?

Well, kinda what you would think and kinda not.

It is actually a wonderful story about how we get stories.  There is a movie coming out soon too.  With a really great bathtub scene.

This is one of those books I've been meaning to read since forever (or at least since I read "The Lottery" in high school) and just hadn't gotten around to. Finally, I saw that the library had a copy of the audiobook and thought it would be perfect for my commute to work.

I. Loved. This. Book. So. Absolutely. Much! So much that I'm okay with not using proper grammar to express my love. It is so odd and strange and creepy and weird. I'm not one of those people who necessarily always likes that kind of book (sorry Neil Gaiman), but this one was so perfect in its weirdness.

By disc two, I had a feeling something strange was going on and that I had a pretty good idea of what it was, but even then I was still interested in the odd narration and strange character dynamics. I felt like I was just sitting on Merricat's stool in the corner, watching all of the weirdness unfold and it was amazing.

Jackson has such a talent for creating odd atmospheres and making the reader question everything and this book is no exception. Wonderfully written with the perfect narrator to tell this story. Amazing, amazing, amazing. Such a phenomenal book. I can definitely see why people love this one so much. Now knowing what this book is about, it's not a subject matter I normally would like, but it is so well-told I can't help but love it.
