Review: If We Never Met (Whisper Lake #5) by: Barbara Freethy
If We Never Met (Whisper Lake #5) - Barbara Freethy

If We Never Met by Barbara Freethy

My rating: 5 of 5 stars

What if, takes a suspenseful turn. Freethy gives emotions the best of both worlds with a hauntingly, unpredictable romance. There's always a twist that pulls at the heart and boggles the mind. If We Never Met may be subtle, but leaves quite an impact on the soul. Freethy never disappoints.

Whisper to Me by Nick Lake
Whisper to Me - Nick Lake

This review can also be found at Carole's Random Life in Books.

I thought that this book was very well done. I have had this book in my review pile for years now but for some reason never picked it up. I decided to finally give it a try and went into the story rather blindly since the only thing that I remembered about the book was that it was a YA story. It turns out that this is a story about dealing with mental illness, grief, romance, and even a bit of a mystery. I am glad that I finally read this emotional story.

This is a rather long book at 544 pages and it tells a big story. I started reading this book as I went to bed and planned to read one chapter before setting it aside to go to sleep. This book is not broken up into chapters like I am used to seeing. The book is broken up into two sections but there are breaks within each of the sections. The story is told as if it were a letter that Cassie is writing to the boy she hopes will give her a second chance.

There is a lot that happens in this book. A lot of those things don't occur until the second half of the story so it would be a bit of a spoiler to discuss those plot points in this review but I did appreciate the way that many later events were foreshadowed in the first part of the book. The first part of the book focuses almost entirely on the evolution of Cassie's mental illness. She describes when the voices start and exactly what they make her do. I felt her anguish and couldn't imagine living with that kind of pain. She has quite the journey as she receives treatment for her condition.

The book also follows Cassie as she deals with moving forward in her life with her illness. We do learn more about her past and the trauma that may have played a part in the development of her condition. We also get to see Cassie making friends and even getting to know the boy that she is writing the letter to. I loved getting to see Cassie having some fun and experiencing some of those typical teenage milestones. The relationship between Cassie and her father wasn't perfect, not at all, but it felt genuine. They both have a lot of pain, and more than a few issues, and don't always know the best way to interact with each other.

I would recommend this book to others. This was quite the emotional journey and I thought that the mental health aspect of the story was very well done. I wouldn't hesitate to read more of Nick Lake's work in the future.

I received a digital review copy of this book from Bloomsbury USA Children's Books via NetGalley.

Initial Thoughts
This was good. I have had an ARC of this book for a very long time but failed to pick it up until now. I selected a book at random to read one evening and it ended up being this book. I found that my digital ARC was nearly unreadable due to poor formatting so I checked a digital copy out from my local library and didn't look back. I was surprised that the book really isn't broken up into chapters in the way that I am used to but there were some natural breaks for those times that I needed to focus on other things.

I really didn't remember what this book was about when I started reading it but was quickly drawn into Cassie's story. The book is written from Cassie's point of view and presented as a letter to a boy. The main focus of the story is Cassie's struggle with mental illness but it also touches on romance, friendships, and a mystery. I really felt for Cassie and hoped to see things go her way.

Whisper - Shaun Grindell,Garrett Leigh

hearing this series on audio and finally I've found the time to indulge and once again Garrett Leigh has given me some wonderful stories to indulge my imagination with. I loved this story Dylan and Angelo were such a good match for each other and Shaun Grindell's narration only made the story that much better and I'm off to the next book.

The Whisper Man - audio
The Whisper Man - Alex North
I have to thank Macmillan Audio for making this novel so captivating. This was the first audio that my husband has ever listened to and it was an experience. We went to visit relatives for a long weekend which required a long car drive. Normally, I read part of the way but I had some audio books I wanted to listen to and this was one of them. I have to say, I think my husband enjoyed it more than I did. I never expected such a great response from him.

First off, I have to say that my husband reads about 3 books a year. I won’t talk about the book but just give you his response to the book as I think that pretty much tells you how we felt about it. When he told me to put the book in the CD player, I was shocked, as we normally listen to country music stations on our car drives. We were about 3 CD’s into the book, when he pushes the stop button and starts to give me his commentary about what is happening in the book and his thoughts about what is about to happen. Again, I am shocked, he is actually absorbed, really absorbed as this is some deep thinking here! We have a short discussion and he resumes the CD. Again, during the next CD, he stops the player a few times to tell me his thoughts. Who is this man? I’m seriously loving that he’s into this book and analyzing it to death!

We arrive at our destination and we still have some CD’s left to listen to but he pulls the CD out of the player, saying that he doesn’t want to listen to the story on the short little trips that we’ll take around town. We’ll listen to the rest on the way home.

On our way home, we finally get done talking and I put the CD in, it starts from the beginning. He remarks that he has heard this part before and “let’s get to the part where …….” I had to laugh, he knows exactly what track to begin on and he doesn’t want to waste any time. There were many times on the way home that he stops the player to talk about the book which by now, I am used to but it appears that I am getting slow in my response time. When the CD in the player begins to start over again on track #1, he gets my attention and tells me that I really need to start paying attention and put a new CD in. I mean, really?!? Give me a second. Then, when I was relaxing with my eyes close, he thought that I was not listening and he proceeded to tell me what I had missed on the CD. This was so much fun!

So, thank you Macmillan Audio for this audio. Now, my husband understands when I sit in the garage after returning home and I continue listening to my audio books in my car.

The Whisper Man by Alex North
The Whisper Man - Alex North

This review can also be found at Carole's Random Life in Books.

This was very well done. This book got my attention after reading a few really favorable reviews. Once I looked a little further, I decided that this was my kind of book and decided that I needed to read it. This was a book that hooked me rather quickly and was rather hard to put down at times. I had a really good time with this story and am really glad that I decided to give it a try.

Tom is trying to move on with his life after the loss of his wife. It is now just him and his son, Jake, and Jake is not dealing with the loss very well. Tom decides that moving into a new house is the step they need. Meanwhile, a boy in town disappears and the details are incredibly similar to the events twenty years earlier when "The Whisper Man" terrorized the community.

I really enjoyed the mystery in this book. I thought that the mystery was rather complex and I couldn't wait to see how all of the pieces would end up coming together. I was never exactly sure how things would work out and I found myself working along with the characters to try to piece things together. There were plenty of surprises and I enjoyed the fact that the book kept me guessing until the end.

I thought that the characters were well done. Tom and Jake were hurting from their loss at the start of the story. Most of the book is told from Tom's point of view and I really liked that we got to see his doubts and concerns. In addition, we also get to know some of the detectives working on the case. I didn't agree with everything that these characters did in the story but they seemed very real to me. They were flawed but trying to make their life better.

I thought that Christopher Eccleston did a great job with the narration of this book. I think that I enjoyed the book just a bit more because of his performance. He did a great job with the character voices and I thought that he was able to add a lot of emotion into his reading. He had a very pleasant voice that was easy to listen to for hours at a time.

I would definitely recommend this book to others. This was a very well done and rather complex mystery that grabbed my attention and didn't let go. I wouldn't hesitate to read more of Alex North's work in the future.

I received an advanced review copy of this book from Celadon Books via Bookish First and I borrowed a copy of the audiobook from my local library.

Initial Thoughts
So this was very well done. I liked the complexity of the mystery and I was eager to see how things would work out. There were a lot of things at play in this story and I liked the way that things fit together in the end. I listened to the audiobook and thought that the narrator did a great job with this book.
