I picked up this book at a library sale because I had seen it on the 2013 World Book Night choices and I am SO glad I did!

Cisneros tells the story of a young Latino girl growing up in Chicago. She uses the voice of the young girl in a series of vignettes and it is moving. I knew once I started this book, by reading the Introduction, that I wouldn't be stopping until I was finished.

Cisneros uses The House on Mango Street to tell many stories of many people through the young girl's voice. Each story weaves together to build the final story as a whole. She's used her own background as well as others' to weave her fictional tale that is definitely based on non-fictional events she's lived or watched lived out. She used it to tell stories that weren't otherwise being told.

Her writing is stirring and creative and it brings readers into stories that many can relate to - we've all been an Esperanza, Rachel, Lucy, Nenny or one of the other deeply rich characters Cisneros brings to life in her short, but meaningful chapters/stories.

No matter who you are, where you're from or what you typically like to read, give Mango Street a try. It has the ability to speak to all its readers!
