Great editing tips, well presented

Okay, so 20 Editing Tips from Professional Writers is promo material for ProWritingAid, an "editing tool that highlights style issues and compares your writing to the best writers in your genre". It's even written by the founder Chris Banks and editor of the ProWritingAid blog, Lisa Lepki.

Does that mean it's all about flogging their site?

Yes, with almost every editing tip there's an explanation on how ProWritingAid identifies the issue so you can make the appropriate edits.

But what about those twenty editing tips?

Surprisingly, at least for me, they are all excellent advice and well worth the not-so-subtle sales pitch for their product. And as a bonus, each tip is presented in an easy to read info-graphic style and comes with examples.

I downloaded this e-book free using a link provided by BookBaby. https://cdn.prowritingaid.com/ebook/ProWritingAid_EBook.pdf,

If you prefer you can pay for it - it's worth it and less expensive than a subscription to their site.

The Business of Writing for Children by Aaron Shepard
Adventures in Writing for Children: More Tips from an Award-Winning Author on the Art and Business of Writing Children's Books and Publishing Them - Aaron Shepard

The Business of Writing for Children, An Award-Winning Author's Tips on Writing Children's Books and Publishing Them, or How to Write, Publish, and Promote a Book for Kids by Aaron Shepard is a reference book or children's fiction. I gave it two stars. I tried several times to read this book. I just couldn't finish it. It was documentary dry and I didn't like it.

It did give some helpful information on what makes a successful story. "The strongest children's stories have well-developed themes, engaging plots, suitable structure, memorable characters, well-chosen settings, and attractive style. For best results, build strengths in all areas."

I received a complimentary e-copy from Shepard Publications and NetGalley. That did not change my opinion for this review.

Why Authors Fail: 17 Mistake Self Published Authors Make...by Derek Doepker
Why Authors Fail: 17 Mistakes Self-Published Authors Make That Sabotage Their Success (And How To Fix Them) - Derek C. Doepker

I picked up this short book when it was free on Kindle. It is an encouraging list of issues that frequently hold writers back and how to overcome them. This book is neither a writing guide or a publishing guide, but more of a list of mistakes in either category that tend to trip up beginning writers. For example, the author points out how many self-published authors use unattractive covers that they design themselves rather than spending the $30 that might gain them hundreds in sales.

Most of these tips were not anything that you can't read on a good writing blog, like Jane Friedman's. Of course, I noticed a few items that I have been and continue to be guilty of, but there was no epiphany that will lead me to new levels of success.

If you need some tips and encouragement for your writing, this was a quick read that could almost be treated as a checklist to get yourself back on track. If you already have a solid writing routine, author blog, and books that are selling at a rate you are happy with, you probably won't gain anything new from this.

Review: Wrede on Writing by Patricia C. Wrede
Wrede on Writing: Tips, Hints, and Opinions on Writing - Patricia C. Wrede

Invaluable resource on writing from Patricia C. Wrede.  She approaches writing in a very practical, reflective progression that I'll admit inspired me as I read through the narrative. She doesn't give you exercises to do (not being a fan of the method personally), but rather she gives short talking points per section on things that are pertinent to the writing life.  It flows very well, is easy to understand and follow while being encouraging to the writer perusing the work.

The book is organized into three sections: "Getting Started", "Not So Basics", and "The Business Side".

I think this is the kind of writing guide that could be perused either by the novice or the veteran writer. Some sections, like the "Getting Started" part, will be more useful to the former, but there are aspects that writers of any level of expertise can take when working on their projects.  I will certainly frequent this as a guide in my own writing pursuits.

Overall score: 5/5 stars

Note: I received this as an ARC from NetGalley, from the publisher Diversion Books.
