A Countess Below Stairs - Eva Ibbotson

A beautiful fairy tale like book, charming from beginning to end. Everything, from the language to the exaggerated villains (at one point there was even dog-kicking! So over the top!) to the essential goodness of the main characters it read exactly as a modern Grimm might. I loved it and ate up every piece. It was delicious in the elan in which it was executed. Much as Anna charms everyone, this book has thoroughly charmed me. Such a sweet, simple Cinderella story but wonderful and lovely, moving and engaging all the same.

A Countess Below Stairs
A Countess Below Stairs - Eva Ibbotson I really enjoyed this read, granted Anna Grazinsky came across as being a bit too perfect a lot of the time but still I found it great fun. I was drawn into this story of trying to succeed when it was all stacked against you. Countess Anna Grazinsky fled Russia after the revolution and lives with her governess in London. It's 1919, the Great War is over but Anna is at a loose end. She realises that without money or prospects the best thing for her to do is find a job and she finds a job working as a housemaid in a stately home. She finds herself in a world of a very different sort. By sheer dint of hard work she gains the respect of the other staff. Things change when the Lord of Westerholme returns home, particularly when his fiancee turns up. Yes, sometimes Anna was a little too perfect but it was a great read.

A Countess Below Stairs
A Countess Below Stairs - The writing style was very rich, which added a lot to the setting and characters. I felt like the book was a little long - some of the character viewpoints could have been cut, but it was still nice to get a complete picture. Of course, you love the two main characters. Individually, they are each generous and kind-hearted. You hear their stories and see how they interact with others and know that they'd be suited to each other. So while it's nice to see them fall in love, it's also a little strange because they spend hardly any time together. The scenes in which they are together are very few.

A Countess Below Stairs
A Countess Below Stairs - Oh man, there was a large cast of people in this book. It was pretty overwhelming. It didn’t help that there were many side stories about people who aren’t that important to the overall story. I had a really hard time keeping everyone straight and remembering what was going on.Anna is likeable but she’s one of those heroine who is incredibly and a bit unrealistically perfect. I can understand that she’s willing to take on a menial job in order to provide for her family. Most people would do that but I don’t know many people who would be all smiles and completely perky while working long days on tough jobs. If she grumbled just a bit she would be more realistic and likeable.I didn’t love the fact the Earl and his fiance were so flat. It’s a fairy tale-ish type story so of course the Earl is going to be charming and be a perfect match for Anna. Of course the finance is going to start off nice but end up as a horrible, mean girl. I just wish there had been more depth to those characters. It would have made the story more interesting. While I enjoyed the story, it was pretty slow going. The story just drug along for most of the book. Things could definitely moved faster and cut some stuff out in my opinion. Despite that there was definitely some charm to the story. It wasn’t as much as I wanted but it was just enough to keep me reading and smiling through the book. The bottom line? It was a nice story. If you like historical fiction with a touch of romance, you’d like this!
