King Edric himself.

Cyrene must decide if love is truly worth the price of freedom. Find out in this first book in USA Today bestselling author K.A. Linde’s new Ascension series.

I bought this a whim! It was only 99p on kindle and well that cover is amazing!! YA Fantasy is not a genre I usually read a lot. However, lately I have been finding the YA Fantasy is becoming a very strong genre within the YA books and the ones I have read are usually fantastic. The Affiliate is by far one of the more unique and fast paced ones. I can't wait to for next one.

DNF at 40%
Ascension (The Ascension Series) - A.L. Patterson

I'm sorry book, it's not me... it's you.

I gave Ascension a good run. At the 40% mark, I just had to give it up. The story was okay, but the characters felt flat and boring. I'll fully admit, I almost gave this up right at the beginning because it opens with a sex scene. A... slightly awkward sex scene. I'm all for well-placed lovemaking in books. This? Was just odd. Add in the fact that this book still seems like it needs an edit or two, and I just couldn't commit.

Sorry Ascension. I think it's time we see other people.

Oaths of Blood (The Ascension Series)
Oaths of Blood (The Ascension Series) - SM Reine Love Elise as usual but I am soooooo annoyed with James and the constant weakness that keeps hitting Elise. I'm also somewhat happy about the end of yet another character point of view, they were exhausting and superficial and extremely irritating to read.

A Review for Ruled by Steel (Ascension #3) by S.M.Reine
Ruled by Steel (#3) (The Ascension Series) - SM Reine

Ruled by Steel is yet another amazing instalment in the Ascension series…. As the synopsis states, Elise failed to stop the ‘Breaking’ and now Hell is bleeding onto Earth so that now there’s only one option for Elise, she must go to Dis/Hell and take control in an attempt to stop the threat to Earth… whilst on Earth, Nash tries to fight of the demons, get everyone to safety , protect the werewolf sanctuary and rally the angels to help save the humans. Will his pleas fall on deaf ears when his brethren view him as a traitor? Everything hangs on Elise and what she plans to do in Hell. It was great to see Elise back in action, she is still struggling with her need to feed which also links to her evolving emotionally too, she seems to be struggling with her empathy and blaming it on Eves influence – but is it? She’s uncomfortable with being responsible for others, she’s unsure about caring for people, feeling that by doing so will put them in danger and she is still freaked out by peoples declarations of friendship, scared when they get too close, get hurt or worse betray her like James…. But she is letting people in which is a big step and I love the connection she feels towards the pack members, Rylie in particular & also Neuma. I wasn’t sure about the feeding discovery, it seemed a bit weird to me and I like it when she devours demons, it gives her a sort of invincibility in my eyes… but I’m happy to go along with it. I loved the developments between Elise & James, she seems to soften towards him a lot in this and I love how they communicate through their bond. I still have hope but feel it’s a long way off. Our setting changes this time as Elise takes on hell in a big way! I always say this for these books; they would look stunning visually. I loved the setting, the descriptions of Dis, the ‘House of Abraxus’, the palace, the bridge…. Begs to be seen and gave most of the book a different feel, more fantasy, more desperate as the setting opens up to more horror and introduces us to the demon lords of Dis, depraved, power hungry monsters who have the most despicable plans in place for the humans and use those they have in the worst ways. I wanted to know more about these lords, their hierarchy, who each one is and what they do… I loved what we got but there’s always room for more. I liked that we got a viewpoint from more than one place of interest – Earth with Nash, Dis with Elise & some curious places with James – I really enjoyed all of their point of views and they each add something that connects everything so easily. The pack did take a backseat in this as they mourn the loss of a loved one but they still make a big impact and I really love the way they embrace Elise as one of their own. I loved the developments within the story and whilst there is a lot of action, a lot of killing & battle… there are also some twists and turns along the way with some surprising consequences which makes me very excited for the next instalment…. This one was epic so bring on book 4 – Caged in Bone… even the title makes me curious for more.

A review for Oaths of Blood (Ascension #2) by S.M. Reine
Oaths of Blood (The Ascension Series) - SM Reine

Oaths of Blood is the equally amazing sequel to Sacrificed in Shadow, second book in the Ascension series.

Elise finds herself in a risky position when a high profile murder points the finger at her and the ‘Union’ put her at the top of their ‘most wanted list’, forcing her into seclusion & keeping an even lower profile than usual but that’s about to change when Rylie Gresham & Seth Wilder come in search of her with a demon possessed werewolf accompanying them. Hoping that Elise will exorcise the wolf so they aren’t forced to kill her, Rylie promises to help Elise out of her predicament….but when they start to make a connection between both of their circumstances, things get scary as they race against time to stop yet another apocalyptic situation. Elsewhere, James is using Elise’s distraction to set his own plans into action, will he be prepared for the consequences?

So, as I said this was an amazing sequel -The plot thickens in this and the threat isn’t from the usual suspect but causes no less of an impact. Elise’s character is awesome as usual although she did seem a bit weaker (physically) in this, I suppose it’s all part of working out who she is now and her capabilities, book 1 touched upon her feeding habits and that carries across into this book - I like this though, working out what sort of creature she is and I look forward to finding out more because I really do like her character so I’m always curious about the progression. When she is framed, it’s hard to see how she’s going to prove her innocence leading to some close shaves with the ‘Union’ which are good but I’m left wondering how the ‘Union’ know what to do with her? They seem to know a lot so I’m hoping for more insight into this because they are coming across as a formidable force – who is pulling their strings? More murders are involved with tons of graphic descriptions, people sliding about in blood is always an eye opener and made for a great scene that I could just imagine, again this is what makes these books so good, I love that the author isn’t afraid to be graphic, I love the harsh reality that this world is, I love everything about them & I always think that it would make an excellent movie, I’ve said when I was first introduced to Elise that she reminded me of a female Constantine and I still stand by that, these stories deserve to be seen not just read about. I like how the wolf pack needed Elise and how they went in search of her, it gives her an approval in a way, these supernaturals believe in her and her abilities which lends a certain amount of trust to her. I like that Rylie is prepared to lend a hand in return and they make a great pair of kick ass ladies, reading of Rylie in action against proper enemies was cool, I like how her wolf is totally different to her usual character and are sometimes at odds with each other (I really need to read her story) but I always feel Elise is the star of the show. It’s hard not to spoil the plot, there are always multiple threads to each book and all come together perfectly so expect, gruesome murder scenes, spookiness, strange happenings, rituals, exorcisms, collaborations, good vs evil, plots & schemes, battles…. but more questions because let’s not forget, this is only book two and there are lots of things to be worked through before we know all of the details, needless to say I loved this book, the series and this author, you are guaranteed a fantastic story from S.M Reine each and every time, she never fails to hit the mark with her writing for me –EVER!
