I forgot to post this last week and then BL went down for maintenance, so this is two week's worth of reading.

Well, I went into No Spend January doing well...until January 12th, when I decided to buy a 99 cent book. Other than that, it is going fine, but that is because none of the books "on sale" are interesting me. And no promos to entice me to spend money on books I do want so I can earn a credit to buy more books.

My base library is doing an adult reading challenge for the winter called Passport to Reading. It runs from January 1st - February 29th. I picked up my passport this week and already filled in three of the ten categories and I am working on numbers four and five. Five categories finished enters you into a drawing for a $25 gift card to Starbucks; all ten categories finished enters you into a drawing for a $50 gift card to Barnes & Noble. I would be happy to win either one!

Really good
Celestina The Astronaut Ballerina - Graham Evans,Donald Jacobsen
I have to say that this book was a wonderful surprise in a good way. The plot is pretty straight forward. Celestina wants to be an astronaut but is discouraged by those around her until the arrival of a new teacher.

Living in a city where people are focused on poc as teachers and the important of having black teachers in the classroom, I thought it was a nice touch that that Jacobsen has the encouraging teacher be a black woman. This small children's book touches not only on the importance of encouraging children but also have role models.

The end pages are particularly good as well.

Children's Book Round Up
Maria's Comet - Deborah Hopkinson
The Queen's Cat (First Year at The Palace) - David Rossmaur
Arial the Astronaut - Jelena Stupar,Mary Nhin
My Truly Most Favorite Fluffy Friend: The Value of Friendship - Pamela Tomlin,Tamara Piper

The Queen's Cat and Arial the Astronaut tare the best of this batch of Kindle freebies.  Maria's Comet is a bit too fictional when it would have made a nice non-fiction children's book.  The Fluffy Toy has cuteness and that's about it.
