Review: The Misadventures of Awkward Black Girl by Issa Rae
The Misadventures of Awkward Black Girl - Issa Rae

Issa Rae is a YouTube filmmaker and now, with this book, an author. Here is a link to her main YT page: https://www.youtube.com/user/actingrl112.

Honestly, I had never heard of Issa Rae before reading this book. After reading this, I went straight to YT and subscribed to her channel. She has such a refreshing and honest voice in a world in which reality tv stars and celebrities just try too damn hard to be famous for nothing or for drama.

What drew me originally to this book was just the cover and the back cover statements from people whose work I like. If they liked Issa Rae, then I would give her a shot. Superficial? Yep. But that is how I roll in the non-fiction non-history section of the library. And I am very glad I gave her a shot. This book had parts that were relatable (especially for kids and teens growing up in the late 80s and all of the 90s) and other parts that were so different, it was eye-opening. 4 stars and I hope to read, and see, more from her in the future

Props to a fellow introvert.
The Misadventures of Awkward Black Girl - Issa Rae

I always love seeing fellow introverts succeeding and was curious to know *how* they did it, so maybe I can get some guidance for myself. :P I had seen this book around but was not familiar with the author, Issa Rae. It's my understanding she has a web series but I've never watched it. On a whim it seemed like a fun idea to pick this up and give it a shot. I had high expectations after seeing her described as an introvert twice on the front cover flap. Didn't need to read the rest of it, this was going to be for me.

Initially this book was absolutely for me. I think we must be in the same age or at least very close because I picked up several of the pop cultural references (including one I haven't heard of in YEARS) so it was a nice nostalgia trip for me. Seeing her as a child and young woman, learning about the internet (and world), having a certain lack of knowledge (street or pop culture) was something I could SOOOOOO identify with, having being raised in a very sheltered and arguably strict environment.

After the first couple of chapters though, the book seemed to slide downhill. I didn't realize it was a series of essays. That is not really a form that works well for me (essay collections) and unfortunately that shone here again. Another review on Amazon talks about how the content is great, but it needs a better editor and that's on the mark for me. Sometimes the topic switches pretty quickly in mid-essay and I was confused as to why we are now talking about Z when we were talking about X just a page ago.

I found her words on her childhood most compelling. Topics vary from dating to her family to her weight to hair, etc. And I really wanted to like it, but after awhile my eyes just glazed over. Several other reviews say that this is really more for someone who is already familiar with Rae, that her web series is much better, etc. I do wonder if I would have liked this better if i was familiar with it.

Personally it really wasn't for me and I wouldn't recommend it. But someone who already knows Rae's work might enjoy it.
