Bout of Books 16: End Week Wrap Up
Bout of Books

The Bout of Books read-a-thon is organized by Amanda @ On a Book Bender and Kelly @ Reading the Paranormal. It is a week long read-a-thon that begins 12:01am Monday, May 9th and runs through Sunday, May 15th in whatever time zone you are in. Bout of Books is low-pressure. There are challenges, giveaways, and a grand prize, but all of these are completely optional. For all Bout of Books 16 information and updates, be sure to visit the Bout of Books blog. - From the Bout of Books team

The last half of Bout of Books 16 week was a little less productive for me.  I finished reading two books, which, Yay!  But I got stuck on These Broken Stars.  I just haven't really been into Young Adult books lately, but I'm going to try to finish it anyway--I'm thinking that maybe I should rethink some of my reading lists, but there are some YA books I really DO want to read.  Maybe I'll just stick to more high fantasy stuff.  I don't know.

Anyway, to summarize, I think I did quite well with this Bout of Books readathon.  I met my goal of reading 4 books--I read 6 and am about 30% finished with another book.  I didn't really keep track of how many hours I'd been spending reading each day, but I'm not going to sweat the details--I spent at least two to three hours reading before I go to sleep anyway, so that's good enough for me.

I had a slight advantage for Bout of Books this time around in that I had a lot of extra days off from work and had a lot of extra time to do some reading.  So, yay for that too!

#boutofbooks 16 – Day 7
Bout of Books

It is the final day of the readathon! I had a ton of fun reading a wide variety of books.

I spent the last two hours doing house chores and listening to the audiobook of The Guermantes' Way, part three in the In Search of Lost Time cycle. While I enjoyed the latter, I'm still quite exhausted, so I decided to end the readathon week now and spend the evening watching Doctor Who and reading blogs ;)

So, without further ado, my totals:

I managed to finish 4 books and read 859 pages. Taking into consideration the chunk of Proust I listened to (250 pages worth of audio), I'm really happy with how the readathon went for me.

The books I read were:

Stranger in a strange land (which didn't exactly wow me),

Drifter Vol. 1 (a spontaneous and quick read that went a bit wrong, but hey),

Sorceress of Darshiva (a comfy return to teenage reading experiences),

Warren the 13th & the All-Seeing Eye (a gorgeously illustrated children's book), and the aforementioned

The Guermantes' Way (which made me almost forget I was ironing; thanks Proust!).

#boutofbooks 16 – Day 5
Sorceress of Darshiva Book 4 of the Malloreon - David Eddings
Bout of Books

Day 5 and I'm relaxing a bit in the sun on my lovely balcony, book in hand.

I just hit page number 300, so I've got 100 pages left of Sorceress of Darshiva. As a teenager I never noticed how Eddings sometimes comes up with the most riddiculous ideas to fuel the plot. I lost it when he suddenly introduced a completely new (and nonsensical) piece of information that would render everything that happened before and after superflouous – only the characters didn't seem to care. Well, I knew before this was only lit for fun, but it is becoming more and more apparent why.

And now I'll continue reading :)

I don't expect to finish this book today, but maybe tomorrow morning.

I think I've been pretty productive in my bookish world these past few days.  Finished up Prince Joe in spite of my quibbles.  Breezed through a Pamela Clare book (Pamela Clare!!!) without really knowing how long it is in terms of page count (although if we go by Kindle book location length (~4000 loc), I'd say it's roughly between 250 to 300 pages, even though it actually felt a bit longer than that--took me around 7 hours to finish reading with some breaks in between.  Then I knocked out the second Tall, Dark & Dangerous book with time to spare to finish up Secondhand Spirits.

But after that, things slowed a little and I've been dragging with These Broken Stars--I'm not really getting into it, but I hope things will pick up soon.  Then again, I've got my mind on wanting to read something, so maybe I'll start on a different book for the time being.

#boutofbooks 16 – Day 4
Drifter #1 - Ivan Brandon,Nic Klein
 Bout of Books

Today I finished book 2 of this readathon, but it wasn't the one I was hoping to race through.

I spent some minutes at the library between appointments and had just enough time to check out a fairly random comic book pick.

It happened to be Drifter Vol.1 – Crash by Nic Klein. And what a disjointed mess it was. This scifi comic lured me in with its vivid colours and panoramic panels. Also I glanced some female characters. That's why I took the book with me I guess.

In Drifter, Abram Pollux' spaceship crashes on a strange planet. Pollux survives the crash and is saved, but it seems several years have passed while his wounds point at a very short period of time. So far, so good (if not that original).

But from then on it only got more and more confusing; by the end of volume one I don't have even a clue what is going on or what I should look out for. Also I don't "get" the world building, and to top it I dislike the protagonist.

So in short: I won't be continuing on with this, as it is indeed a series.

I'm still reading Sorceress of Darshiva. I just didn't have enough time to read, and the heat makes me sleepy.

So far I managed to partake in the conversation on Twitter a bit, if not much.
