Napoleon's Buttons - Jay Burreson,Penny Le Couteur

I really want to read more about Magellan and his journey toward the west to find a new route to the Spice Islands. Fortunately, I have already a book about this topic on my TBR pile. Chances are good that this book is going to be my next non-fiction read:

Over the Edge of the World: Magellan's Terrifying Circumnavigation of the Globe (P.S.) - Laurence Bergreen

(And yes, I´m one of these odd people, who in books like these is more interested in historical tidbits than the actual science)

Mrs. Thomas' Favorite Books
Pete the Cat and His Four Groovy Buttons - Eric Litwin,James Dean

Pete is wearing his favorite shirt, the one with the 4 groovy buttons. When he loses one, he doesn't cry. Goodness, No! He continues to sing.

Lexile Measure: AD350L

I would use this with an activity in which the students would color sort buttons and count out buttons of certain colors.

Corduroy
Corduroy - Don Freeman

Corduroy was first published in 1968 by Don Freeman. This story is about a stuffed toy bear, by the name of Corduroy, who lives his life on the shelf of a department store. Corduroy longs to have a sense of belonging and friendship. One day, Corduroy meets a little girl who instantly falls in love him and eventually adopts him. I would incorporate this book into my counting math unit. The students would complete a learning with buttons activity where they could glue a variety of buttons onto a laminated teddy bear and add up their total number of buttons at the end of the activity. This book is a 3.5 on the Accelerated Reading leveling system.

Pete the Cat and His Four Groovy Buttons
Pete the Cat and His Four Groovy Buttons - Eric Litwin,James Dean

This story is about Pete the Cat loses the buttons of his shirt. He doesn't cry though because buttons come and buttons go. I like how the number of buttons left on the shirt are spelled out, written as a numeral, and represented as a basic equation. This would be good in the classroom to practice writing equations from word problems.
