The Carrie Diaries - Candace Bushnell

I wasn't sure how I'd like this book going into it. I've watched the TV adaptation and liked it well enough. It wasn't my favorite, but it was entertaining.

I'm glad I ended up reading the book, because I did enjoy it. It's not the world's best literature or anything, but it is an entertaining read that goes surprisingly quickly despite the long length. It is a pretty relaxing read for the most part, but does bring up some important points. Bushnell incorporates many topics into the text such as feminism, cliques, and power dynamics.

I'll admit the last quarter of the book was kind of a let down. I liked the ending well enough and it was set up nicely for the second book, but there were things that happened that made the book more stressful than relaxing for me. It's not necessarily a critique of the book, just something that interrupted my personal enjoyment of it.

As far as TV show vs. book, I think the characters are pretty consistent although. the show smooshes Lali and Maggie together. Also, Missy doesn't exist in the TV show universe. The mishaps and problems each character faces varies slightly, but for the most part they are similar.

Overall, a very entertaining read.

The Carrie Diaries/Candace Bushnell
The Carrie Diaries - Candace Bushnell

The Carrie Diaries is the coming-of-age story of one of the most iconic characters of our generation.

Before Sex and the City, Carrie Bradshaw was a small-town girl who knew she wanted more. She's ready for real life to start, but first she must navigate her senior year of high school. Up until now, Carrie and her friends have been inseparable. Then Sebastian Kydd comes into the picture, and a friend's betrayal makes her question everything.

With an unforgettable cast of characters, The Carrie Diaries is the story of how a regular girl learns to think for herself and evolves into a sharp, insightful writer. Through adventures both audacious and poignant, we'll see what brings Carrie to her beloved New York City, where her new life begins.

This book was perfect for those who love books set in high school and books with very strong characters.

Carrie's experience writing for the school newspaper was quite amusing. I loved that the teacher thought she was going to be just another senior needing something on their college applications,

The eighties setting was a lot of fun. Their college application process was so different and I was highly entertained by the way Carrie ended up spending a lot of time waiting by the landline for boys to call.

I'd read this before but could barely remember it; as such, it was a lot of fun to read again. Definitely recommend for lovers of chick fic.

Honorable mentions for other books I really liked go to The Moment Collector (also known as The Vanishing Season, Open Road Summer and Take A Bow.

Review: Summer and the City
Summer and the City: A Carrie Diaries Novel - Candace Bushnell

A fun summer read.

I read the first few pages one day, then read the rest of the book one afternoon. Picking up shortly where the first book left off, Carrie has arrived in New York and is heading off to her first party with Samantha.

As a Sex and the City fan it was a lot of fun seeing how the girls all come together and how different they are as teens from the icons they grow into. Samantha didn't disappoint, it was interesting to see her earlier years in a way I didn't really expect. Though I have to admit when Miranda first appeared she annoyed the hell out of me. She did grow on me more as the story developed. Carrie was pretty much just Carrie pretty much unchanged from the first book. Would have liked to see more of young Charlotte and how she came to fit into newly formed group of growing friendships.

She did grow up quite a lot throughout, and I had the idea she had a set plan on how everything in New York would work out, but nothing of course went as it was planned. People she knew from her home town made appearances and things changed in unexpected ways.

I loved the sense of New York in the book, so easy to picture, a real sense of place making you feel like you were really there. Nothing particularly dramatic or remarkable really seemed to happen plot wise. It was just a fun, enjoyable read. Perfect for an afternoon escape.

Also crosses off a square for my Summer Bingo reading challenge - A pink cover

The Carrie Diaries
The Carrie Diaries - Candace Bushnell I didn't think I'd like this book, because honestly, [b:Sex and the City|7455|Sex and the City|Candace Bushnell|https://d.gr-assets.com/books/1344270731s/7455.jpg|3297002] sucked. Sorry, it just did. As much as I love the show, I didn't like it. It was so confusing! To my surprise, this book was better. A lot.

I started out by feeling I'd read this book before. I've only seen one or two episodes of the show (didn't like it), but it still felt very familiar to me. The plot in this novel was very predictable, but I guess that's okay, because these kinds of books, they just aren't that original in their storylines.

As far as the characters goes, ouch, they were so very immature! I can't believe they were meant to be 18 years old. It's been a few years since I was 18, but still... You don't tell your friends to break up with your boyfriend for you. You do it yourself! It really annoyed me! I couldn't really relate to them, they felt too childish.

I still enjoyed this book though. I liked that Carrie "found her voice." Sometimes, I could almost hear adult-tvshow-Carrie read the lines. It was really well-written. I know I shouldn't be comparing this to the SATC-show, but I can't seperate them, I'm sorry.

Also, the last line really did it for me, and I know that I'll be reading the next book in this series really soon!
