September Book a Day #16: Favorite Picture Book
Sara's Granny and the Groodle - joan gil... Sara's Granny and the Groodle - joan gill

Sara's Granny and the Groodle, by Joan Gill.  Illustrations by Seymour Chwast (who animated the movie Yellow Submarine).  Long out of print (it was published in1969), and with marvelous psychedelic illustrations both on the cover and throughout the book.  Very Peter Max-influenced.

Sara (who always chews her food 100 times - or is it 92?) and her Granny go off on a trip in a taxi drawn by a goose.  Who turns into a groodle (don't feed them after midnight is a rule that might apply here), who is rather bad-tempered.  It all ends well, with Sara asleep in her psychedelic bed.

Used copies currently go for 75$ on Amazon.

September Book a Day #7: Best Fictional Monarch(s)
Ozma of Oz - L. Frank Baum
Alice's Adventures in Wonderland - Lewis Carroll
The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe - C.S. Lewis

A good one (Ozma), and two bad ones (the Queen of Hearts and Jadis, Queen of Narnia, alias the White Witch).

September Book a Day #2: School Setting
Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone - J.K. Rowling,Mary GrandPré
To Serve Them All My Days - R.F. Delderfield
Daddy-Long-Legs - Jean Webster
Anne of the Island - L.M. Montgomery

It's hard to beat Harry Potter for a school setting, but here for honorable mention I include R.F. Delderfield's To Serve Them All My Days (set at a British boarding school from 1919 to 1940 - from the point of view of one of the teachers), Jean Webster's Daddy Long-Legs, and L.M. Montgomery's Anne of the Island, in which Anne Shirley goes away to college, which is probably my favorite in that entire series.
