๏ ๏ ๏  My Thoughts ๏ ๏ ๏

If only I could have listened to an audiobook of this...I believe I could have liked this a little more.  Of course, it would need to be the right narrator, especially for Laura's POV.  Someone who can pull off an authentic Spanish accent.  Plus, I prefer Science Fiction in Audio format.

I mostly liked the characters and I liked the overall story (well, some of it anyway) and the atmosphere created, it was downright scary and gruesome at times.  A glossary of words used in this futuristic world would have been appreciated too because sometimes I was stumped on what some things were.  Sadly, that sort of thing just pulls you out of the story and lessens one's enjoyment of the story, overall.  That coupled with the difficult to follow action scenes and the lackluster ending is what brought my rating down.

#PBwkendread Review: Shutter
Shutter - Courtney Alameda

So the cover called to me on this one. I have to say it just screams "pick me up and read me."

So we get to meet Micheline and her friends who monster hunt but in a different way. Micheline uses cameras and mirrors to exorcise the ghost that she sees.

When they take on a job and do not wait for backup that is when things go down hill, all those that are in Micheline crew end up having a curse called a soulchain which is not good because they have seven days to destroy the entity that caused this or all they all die. Not too hard right? Well when Micheline learns who is behind it all she is in shock and she has to go through tragedy a second time.

I really enjoyed the world that the author created, the supernatural play a normal role in the world so it is normal for ghost and other paranormal to be about, since there is a team to handle it all. I also enjoyed how the author described certain paranormal entities like the scorpion. No it is not a real scorpion but made up of different parts so to speak and the way it moves oh lawd FEAKY!! For the description you are going to have to dive into the book.

I think the lineage of the characters was a great idea to put into the book. You have the Helsing's and the Stoker's. Yes the old school lineage is in this book but it is just their blood.

The characters were well developed i.m.o. and I thought Micheline's character was awesome. She didn't mind breaking the rules when she felt they needed to be broken, she is strong, and hard headed at times. Though it all comes together to make a good character.

I hope there is a book two out so I can read more about this world that has been created!

Shutter - Courtney Alameda

Whew! This took me a long time to read, but I actually ended up really liking it. I don't read a lot of horror, as I am a wuss scare pretty easily, but Shutter came highly recommended so I decided to give it a try. And I'm glad I did! Although the first few chapters didn't immediately grab me, I became enthralled at the start of the second section and ended up really liking it.

Micheline and her crew were delightful to read about! All of them had such distinct personalities and never were boring and I just loved all of them. Micheline in particular I really liked, and I cried

at the end when the identity of the ghost was revealed. Micheline's story was so sad and I felt for her.

(spoiler show)

Despite what she went through, she's tough and gritty and savvy and I liked her a lot.

I liked the style of writing too. It's dark, gritty and creepy, but also slightly eerie. It fits the story well. This world of monsters and ghosts that Alameda created is also really cool, and although sometimes I was confused about the different technologies used to defeat the ghosts, I thought it was really cool.

Overall, I really enjoyed this. So why not five stars? As always, I have an issue with the romance. Ryder was never my favorite character, but I liked him well enough. I just don't like the romance between him and Micheline. In general, I don't like usually like romance, so unfortunately I took off a star for that.

But other than that, I really enjoyed reading Shutter and I recommend it if you're looking for a good YA horror novel.

Trigger - Courtney Alameda

This short novella is placed before all the events that happen in Shutter. I do have to say that I love the names. Trigger. Shutter. And it all fits the story so well.

I have tried Shutter, and when I couldn't get through that one, I saw this one and tried it out. I normally love stories like this, and I am always interesting in Helsings and monsters and special abilities.

I still want to further read Shutter, someday, but I had the same problem with that one as I had with this one. Our main character Micheline, she is not only not that likeable, she is also an enormous idiot, risking people's lives, risking her life. It is quite frustrating that someone tasked with such an important task does all these things. I know, she wants to show her dad that she is capable of leading the corpse one day, but there also must be another way to show him that.

The book was quite exciting, with a running wild scissorclaw killing/maiming people. I really loved those parts, well, all but the last part, because that was just overkill and as one might say: "That escalated quickly." What happened there in the last part quite ruined the book for me. It was just over the top, weird, and I don't understand how Micheline apparently never got punishment or something? Or maybe she did, but after all that went down we are thrown in a time loop and end up a few months/weeks later. *sighs* I was kind of looking forward to the ending, I had quite a few questions after what happened there.

I didn't like the dad or the mom. The dad kept pushing his daughter, threatening her with losing her chance at leading the corpse, didn't hide his disappointment when she made a mistake.
The mom was also meh, I won't spoil that one, as that happens somewhat later in the book, but I was just shaking my head at what she said to Micheline.
I can somehow see why Micheline has turned out the way she did. With 2 parents and sky-high expectations of doom.

Would I recommend this book? At times yes, the chases, the hunt and the information about Helsing and what they do, is very interesting. But the idiocy, the expectations of the parents were just meh.

Shutter - Courtney Alameda

Loved it! :) I loved the story. although, sometimes, for me her metaphors are a bit too much. but that's just for me. all in all i loved the book. I felt that part when she was about to take Ryder away. haha. when she was building up his character making us love him more and the scene where her mother is about to rest finally it brought me to tears. It was great <3
