The Very Hungry Caterpillar
The Very Hungry Caterpillar - Eric Carle

The Very Hungry Caterpillar is a fun story that can be read from Pre-K through 1st grade. It is about a caterpillar who eats a lot of different food items each day, and displays the life cycle of a caterpillar.

You can do a sequencing activity with this story, determining what the caterpillar ate each day, or you can do a science activity about the life cycle of a caterpillar. You can give the students a picture of a caterpillar with Monday - Sunday written in each part of the caterpillar's body, and the students can either write or draw what the caterpillar ate each day.

Days of the Week
Cookie's Week - Cindy Ward,Tomie dePaola

In the story Cookie's week, everything is going wrong and he is getting very discouraged. Cookie has something go wrong each day of the week. In my classroom I could introduce this in two ways. One being learning the days of the week with my Kindergarten students. This is a way we could go over them. Hearing this book being read could also help them to remember them. Second we could learn about how in your life there can always be a time where things will not go your way. I would tell my students that it is important to stay positive and things will always get better.

Intended Audience/Grade Level: Kindergarten

This is a classic book that I remember reading when I was in Elementary school! It shows the life cycle of this caterpillar; showing how it eats and eats until he forms a cocoon and transforms into a beautiful butterfly! The illustrations in this book make it a must read!

I would use this book in 1st-3rd grade. I think it would be a useful science lesson showing the life cycle of a particular kind of animal. You could also use this book to teach the days of the week! It could end up being a fun craft where you let the students decide what the caterpillar will eat on what day of the week!

Cookie's Week
Cookie's Week - Cindy Ward,Tomie dePaola

Written by Cindy Ward

Illustrated by Tomie dePaola

Cookie is a mischievous black and white kitten who gets into trouble every day of the week, knocking over trash cans and getting shut in drawers. What will Cookie do on Sunday?

This book would be great for discussing days of the week with kindergarten or as a simple introduction to exclamation marks in first grade. Cookie is a lovable kitten and the colorful illustrations will keep readers engaged.
