Dear Martin by Nic Stone
Dear Martin - Nic Stone
One of the most powerful reads I've read.
Maybe because it hits too close to home.
With all the injustice happening in the world, this story was a vivid reality of what life is like for African-Americans, told by an African-American. People need to hear the stories to bring about change. We all need to stop turning a blind eye to any injustices that constantly surround our lives. These horrible things don't just happen in the US. It happens here in Canada and more. You would think racial attacks were a thing of the past, but they're not.
This book may be labeled as fiction, but it couldn't have felt more real.
Read it. Let it affect you. Then change.

Dear Haiti, Love Alaine by Maika Moulite & Maritza Moulite
Dear Haiti, Love Alaine - Maritza Moulite,Maika Moulite
Can we just focus on the cover for a second?! So pretty!
This was a story about the culture of Haiti. It was also about a girl who had roots to it and was on a mission to end a family curse.
I was enthralled. I loved learning about the places Alaine visited or researched in Haiti. I had not once thought of ever visiting, but now I want to.
This story had a plot that you didn't actually see coming. When it happened it was so easy to get into it. Politics and corruption go hand-in-hand, even if all is not what it seems.
Solid story, and authors I would like to read again.

Dear Martin!!!
Dear Martin - Nic Stone

english review only

spoiler warning cause the summary gives a lot away

audible audiobook

Summary: Justyce McAllister is top of his class and set for the Ivy League—but none of that matters to the police officer who just put him in handcuffs. And despite leaving his rough neighborhood behind, he can't escape the scorn of his former peers or the ridicule of his new classmates.

Justyce looks to the teachings of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. for answers. But do they hold up anymore? He starts a journal to Dr. King to find out.

Then comes the day Justyce goes driving with his best friend, Manny, windows rolled down, music turned up—way up, sparking the fury of a white off-duty cop beside them. Words fly. Shots are fired. Justyce and Manny are caught in the crosshairs. In the media fallout, it's Justyce who is under attack.

My review: READ THIS BOOK!!!

I really liked the writing/narration of this book. SO DAMN GOOD.

The characters were amazingly done and there was so much growth here. On a light note: Justyce and SJ are my babies.

I loved this book for the way it punched me in the gut. This was brutally honest and I'M HERE FOR IT. This book made me angry and it frustrated me (cause let's be real for a second here, the things that happened, the big one and the small ones, THEY ARE ALL REALISTIC, this isn't overdramatised, THIS IS THE REAL), it broke my heart. It was everything that I wanted it to be and more. If The Hate U Give is a book that everyone should read, put this one on the list as well!!!

I need to read everything else that Nic Stone published!!!

Dear Girl
Dear Girl - Aija Mayrock

I wrote to find the answers,
instead
I found myself.

Dear girl is a collection of short poems on female empowerment by a young new poet. This is her first collection, and as such it is dealing with very urgent and important matters. It is a part of a stream of feminist poetry for girls, which I can only applaud. However, the poems were rather simple at times and I thought they could have been better if they had been a bit more subtle at times. Part of poetry for me is not only the message but also the beautiful phrasing of things, and the latter was a bit missing in some of poems.

Thanks to the publisher and Netgalley for providing me with a free copy of this book in exchange for an honest review!

Dear Life ★★★★☆
Dear Life: Stories - Alice Munro

I don't think I could do this book of short stories justice with a review. Munro writes stories about ordinary people in everyday situations that are a turning point in their lives. To have an affair, to stay or leave, to wait or act, to be silent or speak. She writes without any literary tricks and often at a remove from the characters, but each story still pulled at me in some way.

Paperback. I discovered Munro while vacationing at a rental beach house and had finished the book I had brought with me, so was browsing the completely random selections on the bookshelves. I didn't get to read more than the first story in this collection, but it was enough to know that I needed to have a copy for myself.

I read this book for Booklikesopoly 2020, lot Mountain Cabin 15: Read a book with a tree or a mountain on the cover, or read a book that features a main character who is a father. This book has a tree (or tree trunk, I guess) on the cover with a woodsy background.
