Love Insurance
Love Insurance - Earl Derr Biggers

A couple of days ago I received Love Insurance in my Willoughby book club subscription box. I was instantly intrigued by this book: the cover, the blurb and the pitch that says “P.G. Wodehouse meets Oscar Wilde meets The Great Gatsby […]” screamed “READ ME, NOW!” at me, so I had to pick it up immediately. And I´m so glad that I did it.

Impoverished Lord Harrowby takes an insurance out against his bride to be, wealthy American socialite Cynthia Meyrick. Should she decide to cancel the wedding, Lord Harrowby is to become a wealthy man. Insurance employee Dick Minot gets send out to ensure that the wedding takes place … and stumbles into a whole lot of complications and weird situations.

I stand by my statement that this book feels like a screwball comedy. Just think of the movie Some Like It Hot and the feeling it gives you when you follow the characters of Tony Curtis and Jack Lemmon, trying to maneuver through the mess that they have gotten in to. The moment you desperately wish that everything may turn out right, even though everything spirals out of control and it feels like there is no way out of it.

Reading Love Insurance invoked the same feelings in me and on top of it all it was an incredibly fun read. I caught myself chuckling at passages, a thing I hardly never do while reading a book. The people from the Willoughby book club certainly has send a gem to me with this book and since I enjoyed Earl Derr Biggers writing style, I´m planning to try out his Charlie Chan mystery books.

Highly recommended for everyone who seek a light, fun and charming read with a lot of crazy situations.

Review: Thrust
Thrust: Poems - Heather Derr-Smith

Thrust

verb

1. to push forcibly; shove; put or drive with force...

Heather Derr-Smith's latest collection of poetry is aptly titled. There is considerable force behind every poem in this collection. These are not docile poems about a girl and her pet chicken. These are poems that contain throbbing, shivering, cutting, ripping, crushing, knocking, tasting, bleeding, sparring, breaking, sucking, and, most notably, thrusting. The result is a collection of poems that are very visceral, but which quickly lose their shock.

I'm not a big fan of the meandering style or the crass depictions displayed in Thrust, but its the repetitiveness of it that really distanced me. They lost their punch. Readers of poetry who appreciate an author that doesn't ever let up, however, will likely love the weight of this collection.

Something Sweet by Megan Derr Review
Something Sweet - Megan Derr

It's just another day at the candy shop for Sherlock: a quiet afternoon spent more on reading his latest fantasy novel than on selling candy. The kind of day he loves, even if the looming New Year's Eve leaves him feeling nostalgic and a little lonely. But then the last person he ever expected to see walks through the door of his shop, and Sherlock realizes that some things don't fade with time, but grow stronger.

Review

This book is a tease. The heroes are wonderful. Bookworm, candy store owner and ex football player turned writer. They both had crushes on each other in high school.

I liked it a great deal but it needed to be a much longer book with these wonderful characters.

Delivery with a Smile (Delivery with a Smile #1) by Megan Derr Review
Delivery with a Smile - Megan Derr

Jack worked hard to obtain a normal life. He might not love it, but it's better than the criminal life he left behind—even if it cost literally everything, and he really does hate being a damned delivery man. On the bright side, his route includes a friendly old lady who makes the world's best cookies and regales him with tales of her hot, jet-setting son. Normalcy definitely has perks.

Then he walks in on her and her son arguing with men at gunpoint.

This is a great short story with madcap pacing and lots of chemistry. It made me smile.

Honest
Two for the Show - Megan Derr

This is book # 4 in the Lovesongs series also known as The Missing Butterfly Series.  This book can be read as a standalone novel.  Be aware that it may contain spoilers.  For reader enjoyment and understanding, I recommend reading in order.

Nikko has a family crisis he must see to.  He was told by his lawyer to create a scandal so the paparazzi won't find out the personal.  Nikko gets his chance with a kiss to what he believes is a man beyond his reach.

Jake is shocked but pleased to be the quarry of a man such as Nikko.  Then to find out it is only pretend.... well he might as well go along.  Why waste the chance with a man he is seriously attracted to?

This story just grabbed me from the get go.  Emotional, sexy, and the heat!  Oh this story has more than enough to keep you turning the pages.  I loved the banter between the characters.  The recurring ones from past books add the perfect snark.  I give this book a 4/5 Kitty's Paws UP!
