Completed Series / Authors

As I just finished the last book of Josephine Tey's Inspector Grant series (and have also read both of her nonseries mysteries, Brat Farrar and Miss Pym Disposes), it occurred to me that there is a third "series reading" master post I should keep, in addition to the First in Series and Ongoing Series posts that I created a while ago, as inspired by Moonlight Reader; namely, one to collect all my completed reading. So this post collects everything from books / series recently finished to those that I read a long time ago in a galaxy much further away than I care to think about: in the latter case, if fiction, I can't guarantee that I remember much about the plot or the characters (which just might mean that it's time for a reread, but that's a different matter); if nonfiction, whatever I remember of their contents has long merged into the general muddle of information about our world, past and present, that has passed through my brain over the years, mostly without taking permanent residence and definitely without me still being able to pinpoint any specific source. But so help me, I did read all of these -- some only once, some have become favorite comfort reads.

I'll only be collecting completed series or other similarly definable groups of books here (e.g., "all novels / short stories by ..."); beginning with actually completed books and concluding with a section listing the series I have abandoned.  This is not intended as a master post listing all of my completed reading.

The New One by Mike Birbiglia
The New One: Painfully True Stories from a Reluctant Dad - J. Hope Stein,Mike Birbiglia

Mike Birbiglia is one of my favorite stand-up comics and I loved the movie for 'Sleepwalk with Me', so it was pleasure to be able to read this.

Birbiglia cuts to the heart of fears surrounding parenthood and reflects on how life tends to put us in really compromising situations. Reading this I am more fervent than ever in my desire to never have children, but 'The New One' has a lot to offer, even to parents. As ever, Birbiglia tackles his insecurities in a super funny and super uncomfortable way with complete honesty.

These Plumbers have Seen and Smelled it All.
The Poop Diaries - Abby Ross
Plumbers are not always just plumbers. We are rescuers, concierges, and listeners. We go into people’s homes, treat them with respect, answer their questions, and fix their problems.

Back in February, I posted a Book Spotlight and Guest Post from Abby Ross about the origin of this project. I've now found the time to read it, and it's exactly what was promised. A collection of anecdotes about memorable jobs and the people they've helped from a wide variety of plumbers at various stages of their careers.

Most of the stories sound like the stories someone would share over beers—generally told to amuse/entertain, some feature some pretty gross things, some are heartwarming (a couple are particularly sweet). And wow—the things they've found? Mind-boggling.

Yes, occasionally, the stories get repetitive—there are only so many plumbing problems. It reminded me a little of Herriot's All Creatures... books, which also largely consisted of variations on a theme. But they're quick enough reads that it's easy to get past. And every time a tale starts to feel like one you've read before, within a page it moves to something else and that's over with.

I wouldn't have minded a little more detail about what some of the technical terms mean—I was able suss them out from context, and eventually, we're given better definitions, it just would've been nice to have it up front.

My biggest—really only—complaint was the lack of contractions in the dialogue. Sure, I knew that none of the dialogue was made of exact quotations, it was all paraphrases based on memory. But still, everyone speaking in a wooden, contraction-less manner just feels wrong.

A breezy book that makes you think about a segment of the population that most of us likely try not to think about, but really should. Ross helps us to do so by hearing their stories—with an emphasis on those that'll make you grin. This sentiment is repeated throughout the book, and it's a pretty good note to end on:

“If things get bad and your furnace breaks, you can always build a fire. If your electricity goes out, you can always light a candle. But you always need clean water to drink and a place to go poop.”

And that is why the world will always need plumbers.

Disclaimer: I received this novel from the author in exchange for this post and my honest opinion, I thank her for it.

The Corset Diaries
The Corset Diaries - Katie MacAlister

Tessa is a plus sized American who goes on an English TV show. The show is designed to show how people (a Duke and his family and their servants) lives in the Victorian times. Tessa got the job because she was a distant relation to an American who married an English Duke. Max, who plays the Duke, is also a distant relation of the Duke who married the heiress.
Tessa's 1st person narration was laugh out loud funny. But (yeah you knew there was a but!), she was very self-conscious about the size of her body (she is 6ft and a size 18). When it came to Max, I liked the he was attracted to her just as she was. I also liked she was a little older than him (39 to 34). But, the 5 year gap mattered more to Tessa than it did to him. Which was very annoying considering Tessa's husband was 20 years older than her (who died from cancer 3 years prior).
This was a fun, escapist read.
I read this for Romance-opoly Spring square Moon track

Ongoing Series

Following up on my First in Series post and, again inspired by Moonlight Reader, this post collects all of my currently (as of April 2020) ongoing series; i.e. all series that I have started and neither fully completed nor decided to discontinue.  Like my First in Series post, this is primarily for my own reference, so in order not to have too many sub-series sections I'm combining golden age and noir mysteries into classic crime fiction, ditto both major branches of speculative fiction (sci-fi and fantasy), and my major areas of nonfiction interest (history and biographies / memoirs). -- Wherever I didn't start reading a given series in order, I'm listing book 1 (not crossed out) in addition to the (crossed out) completed books to mark this fact.  By the same token, since I didn't start all of the series with book 1, it makes more sense to me to actually record the books I'v already read rather than the one following next after my respective last read.  Completed (or abandoned) series are moved to a separate post.
