Clever book, thought provoking and a bit freaky

Good book, sad topic
Nothing to Envy: Ordinary Lives in North Korea - Barbara Demick

Nothing to Envy gives a sober view of North Korea, mostly during the famine stricken 1990s.   The book gives testimony from six North Korean citizens who had defected.  I recently read The Giver and I complained that people really are not that oblivious and unobservant to what is happening around them.  I kind of have to take that back having learned of the brainwashing and very early indoctrination of children  used by DPRK.  Even if there is an unconscious (or conscious) realization the what they say (we live in a paradise generously provided by our dear leader) does not match the reality, any discussion must be immediately suppressed.   It seems that everyone knows that being sent away to a labor camp is probably the worst thing that could happen, even worse that starving in the cold.   I don't agree with George W Bush on much, but I have to say he had it right when he expressed hate for a leader who would starve his citizens while manipulating them into believing that they have it good.

I had read the Orphan Master's Son earlier this year and I am glad I read it first.  OMS is a fictionalized version of North Korea, and I think some of its artistic punch may have been diluted had I read Nothing To Envy first.   I highly recommend both books to anyone interested in North Korea.
