The Witch House of Persimmon Point by Suzanne Palmieri
The Witch House of Persimmon Point: A Novel - Suzanne Palmieri An interesting story. It jumps around in time a lot, so be prepared for just a tad bit of whiplash at times. There were a few jumps that really threw me and I had to go track back until I knew when I was again. The story follows a family of special women - witches, for lack of a better word - and the house that holds them. The story is just as much about the house as it is about the people. A house that was witness to many tragedies and holds on to the women it likes. There are several generations of women, and we learn about their history through diaries and tales told by their ghosts. Most of these stories do not have what most would consider a happy ending, but somehow they are all satisfying. An interesting and engaging look into the history of an incredibly interesting family. I want to know them better and learn more about what happens next.

London Belongs to me by Jacquelyn Middleton
London Belongs To Me - Ms. Jacquelyn Middleton
This was a really fun story. I was drawn into Alex's world from page one, when she lands in London and all her perfectly laid plans fall apart one after another. Her luggage is lost, her ride can't pick her up, and her room is more of a closet. But that's just the tip of the iceberg, things quickly get even worse as she struggles to find her place in the world of the London theater. From plagiarism, to theft, to just people being really crappy.

There is a bright side. She re-connects with an internet buddy in person,a and they open a new world of people of places to here. They show her a new attitude and that lifelong friends are possible. Alex faces a lot during her first year in London, and she doesn't always handle it well. Those are the times I loved her the most, when she was down and out and making the worst decisions possible. We've all been there and it only encouraged me to cheer harder.

There is a great ending. Mean people get what they deserve and the good people find happiness. I loved the characters - they were so believable and likable that I wish I think I'll need to go visit them again sometime soon.

An Address in Amsterdam by Mary Dingee Fillmore
An Address in Amsterdam: A Novel - Mary Dingee Fillmore
I have read quite a few stories about World War II, but most were about events that took place in Germany or England. This was a very different one for me, taking place in Amsterdam. A place where the Jewish population was almost wiped out by the end of WWII. The people of Amsterdam never thought the war would come to them. They had lived peacefully for years and hadn't gotten involved in WWII. They thought it was pass them by.

But as we know, it did not just pass them by. Rachel Klein, a young Jewish woman, finds herself caught up in all of it. As she watches the Nazi's take over her city and country, she knows she can't stand by and watch it happen. When her friends and neighbors are hauled away to placed unknown to never be heard from again, she turns from an innocent girl without many cares, into one of the best messengers with the resistance.

Putting her life on the line countless times to help fellow Jews and those that support them, the time comes where it's too dangerous for her to continue and she goes into hiding with her family.

This was an incredibly uplifting story of how one person can make a difference in other's lives. But it was also an incredibly sad tale of one of the worst times in human history. Well written, and from what I can tell, well researched, An Address in Amsterdam was a chilling look into human nature and history that we should never forget.

We Are Unprepared by Meg Little Reilly
We Are Unprepared - Meg Little Reilly
A book based on the storm of the century, a story that has been in the making for months, a storm that is set to change the very geography of the East Coast. I really wanted to see what this storm had in store and how our characters and their small town would weather the storm. I love survival stories, and this one seemed like it would be especially good.

Unfortunately, the storm never seemed to arrive. Well, it did eventually, but it took far longer than I expected. Instead we had a story about a couple that really shouldn't have been together, and the way they come together and then fall apart all over again. I found it difficult to like Ash or Pia, so relating to their struggle. But we still had the storm (the anticipation of which was doing a number on everyone).

But it kept taking so long for it to get here! Only the last third of the book was about the storm itself and its aftermath. Once we get to this part, I started to enjoy the story much more. There was excitement, some coming together, and some tearing apart. It really was the story of the century, with a perfect combo of devastation. It seemed to last forever, and the recovery was still ongoing. I loved this part, I really needed it to come sooner though.

Everything We Keep by Kerry Lonsdale
Everything We Keep: A Novel - Kerry Lonsdale

I loved this book until the epilogue. Then I wanted to throw the book - not because of anything wrong - I know it was just a personal preference - but OH MY GOD it made me so mad. Now, this could be seen as a good sign. It takes a lot for me to have that type of reaction to a book. I was so drawn into the characters and their lives that I felt like they were my friends. Good thing!!

I learned a lot about memory and what it can and can't do. It's quite fascinating, and from my simple research partner (Google) the author did a great job of portraying the circumstances. As Aimee comes to grips with what has happened to her fiance, we learn right along with her, and it was a great way of relaying information without doing just a big info dump on me.

Everything We Keep is an incredible emotional ride. I felt everything in the spectrum right along with Aimee and even James (the little bit we get to see). Right before the end, I was frustrated with life, but satisfied with the way Aimee had reacted and sorted things. Then the last two page....and the almost throwing. I want to say those pages ruined the book for me, until I tried to explain it all to someone. Their comment, "If it touched you so deeply, then it was a good book."

And they were right. This was a book that was beyond amazing and engaging. But if you read it, be prepared. It is not what you are going to expect. I could tell you the story, and it still wouldn't be what you expect. You have to live this one to truly experience it.
