Fruits Basket Vol 1 by Natsuki Takaya
Fruits Basket, Vol. 1 - Natsuki Takaya

I love it. I love it! This nostalgic series is so special to me. The art style is cute, the story line is unique and pretty wonderful in my humble opinion. The characters are varied and fun.

There is so much more to Fruits Basket than meets the eye when you first just glance at the cover. You see a pretty anime girl in a school girl uniform, so you might think of the typical anime stereotypes of the girls being overly sexy, fan service and all the other cliches found in "girly" manga.

Fruits Basket is not like that at all. There is nothing that I would call fan service. There is one character (The Dog) that is a pervert, but it never seems to be taken too far, and I think his one liners are used more for comedy.

Speaking of comedy, this series is funny. The author mentions in her notes that she did not intend on it being a comedy, but it just sort of happened that way. There are so many human emotions in this story, humor, anger (between Yuki & Kyo), grief, and the love the Sohma's and Tohru quickly feel for each other, like a found family.

This manga might have a girl as the main character, but it is not a story for girls. It is a story for anybody who likes good storytelling.

There is no romance in this volume, but you get the vibe about the romance that will happen later. I've read up to volume 13, so I know the romance is a slow burn and I really enjoy that. This series explores friendships and family dynamics and I'm so happy it did not jump straight to crushes and insta love.

Tohru is a very likeable main female lead. She's a little naive, but also a very good person. She wants to make her mother proud and do good in school, and also be a good friend to people she cares about. She is a hard worker and is quick to care about people she meets.

I have love for both Kyo and Yuki, but some frustration that if they just talked to each other about their true feelings, they could work out their issues and stop breaking Shigure's house! I hope Shigure is getting paid good for his novels, because he's fixed that door about a million times.

There is not one character in this series that I dislike, except maybe Akito, but we'll get to that later.

Oh the Yuki fan club is kind of annoying, but can be funny too.

Reading progress update: I've read 1 out of 211 pages.
Fruits Basket, Vol. 1 - Natsuki Takaya

I figured that, since I have a bunch of the fandom teas, I should reread the volumes - and finish the series, since I stopped at one point to let some unread volumes build up and then never got back to it.

I'll be drinking my fandom teas as I go, to add to the experience. :-) Although so far I've been a little disappointed. Shigure's tea is kind of boring, Yuki's tea is weird, and Kagura's tea is a little too sour. On the plus side, Hatsuharu's tea is smooth and delicious, and Hiro's tea isn't bad, although not something I'd want to drink on a regular basis. But darn it, I really wanted to like Shigure and Yuki's tea enough to buy larger tins of them, because those two were my favorite characters (in the anime at least - Shigure is maybe a bit too dark for me in the manga).

Fruits Basket 1
Fruits Basket, Vol. 1 - Natsuki Takaya

Once I sat down and concentrated on this, I got quite into it and sped through it. I'm interested in where it's going to go from where it ended. How is she going to fit into their lives? Is she going to fall for one of the two? but which one, the rat or the cat?

I'll have to see if my workmate will lend me the rest of the books she has in this series.
