Icy Passage - Ann Gimpel

Antarctica…Brr, cold just thinking about Icy Passage by Ann Gimpel. So, I’ll put on some warm clothes because the adventure is about to begin. Could this be a Twilight Zone episode?

MY REVIEW

Icy Passage by Ann Gimpel is a paranormal, science fiction romance that I would recommend for adults. I find it funny that tourists travel there, buying kick knacks and such. I can think of so many other places I woud go, like a warm sandy beach with palm trees.

We start right out with trouble at the US base, McMurdo, in Antarctica. Micah’s study was running wild, causing two deaths. Archaea – pyro karyotes, microorganisms. You don’t need to know all the technical details to know something hinky is going on with them. Are they sentient? Help is on the way in the form of Brynn and Kayna.

Kayna is an MD, but she also has special abilities, paranormal abilities. She has a raven for a spirit guide. I love how she describes herself as a flaming bitch, saying what she thinks as she sees it. Her curt manner rubs people the wrong way at times. Sounds a bit like me.. LOL

Brynn’s getting on a ship with his archaea, leaving South Georgia Island, heading to McMurdo. Kayna is on the same ship, heading to the same place. What follows is predictable, but I am so happy to be on the journey with them anyway. I couldn’t help but chuckle when they first met. The immediate attraction goes both ways.

Kayna is strong, loyal and committed. Brynn is the hero, the knight in shining armor we would all want by our side in times of danger. He accepts on faith that there is more than meets the eye, conquering his fear, willing to fight to the death to save her. I love that Brynn is a supernatural fan, so he fits right in.

Her dead father has his own agenda and they will come to blows.

Chris is a great guy, flawed, but friendly, like the little puppy that follows you around, wanting to be your friend. He became a character that I admired and looked forward to seeing.

As if the archaea aren’t enough of a problem, World War III looms on the horizon. How far will the United States and Russia go to make their point?

Celtic and Chinese lore and mythology converge, creating a wonderful paranormal fantasy. An icy world, days without sun, WWIII and nuclear weapons, the Shama’s dragon spirit, magic, traveling between here and the Otherworld.

The writing makes this combination of genres read as if it could really happen. Even some of the less desirable peripheral characters step up to the plate when challenged. The romance is hot and steamy, loving as if there may be no tomorrow. Maybe it is more than their hearts and bodies talking to each other. Maybe it is their magic too.

If you think everything is connected, this book will make you a believer.

Check out Ann Gimpel’s bio. Could her camera contribute to her inspiration?

Dollhouse (Review)
Dollhouse - Anya Allyn

Okay, you’ll have to cut me a little slack because it’s been awhile (read: just over a year) since I read this book, so unfortunately, my review won’t be terribly detailed. It’s a little fitting, though, because this book was practically the definition of vague—I thought I’d been doing a pretty good job of keeping track of the scenery and all that while I was reading, but by the end, I had realized I had absolutely no idea what this dollhouse looked like inside, except for maybe a room or two. The premise was interesting in and of itself, but the novel introduced so many mysterious concepts without answering any questions that it was hard to stay focused. On top of that, there was just awkward dialogue and a love triangle that seemed there to create drama more than develop the characters, so all in all, I wasn’t a huge fan of this book. It ended on a cliffhanger, but I’m not really dying to read the next book.

An ARC of this book was provided by the publisher via NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.

Finished!
Dollhouse - Anya Allyn

Well, the ending made about as much sense as I thought it would. I thought I had a pretty clear picture of the layout of the Dollhouse, but the more I read and the more areas opened up, the more I realized I had no idea where anything was supposed to be. The last section that Cassie crawled through, I have no idea what that was supposed to look like. It was pretty frustrating, considering I couldn't picture anything with accuracy.

So it's a cliffhanger? We're supposed to be okay with everyone dying except for Cassie and probably Ethan? (W00t, tru luv livessssss.) What the heck was the serpent shadow thing? What happens to Lacey? WHERE IS THE RESOLUTION?

I don't know. Solid two stars, because some of those lines were just beautiful.

I hope the ending of this book makes any kind of sense--so far, I'm not sure it will. New things keep popping up to add more suspense, but I'm starting to get sick of it. I'd like to understand something by the end.

And of course Ethan always wanted Cassie. Of course. Because teenagers never just ask out the people they want to ask out. It's always gotta be incredibly complicated for absolutely no reason whatsoever.

(And yes, I count staying with Aisha because they slept together as no reason.)

I'm still really confused. And Aisha seems like a total you-know-what--what kind of person would throw her supposed best friend to a psychopath for supposedly breaking the rules and kissing her boyfriend? I'd be a little more concerned with getting everyone out alive. Unrealistic reactions to create more drama...

I'm a little more interested now that the Provider is part of the story. I hope he actually has an interesting story behind him and his motives. Part of me is even hoping for a love triangle because I'm so sick of Cassie fawning over Ethan for no good reason.
