REVIEW BY DEBBIE - The Guitarist by Lindy S. Hudis
The Guitarist - Lindy S. Hudis

It is the wild, decadent and sexually charged 80s, and Diego Ortega is a rock guitar god. He is loved, adored and worshiped by screaming, sex-crazed groupies, obsessed fans and over-zealous admirers. Wherever the great guitar god goes, love struck and fanatical women rip open their shirts and plant aggressive kisses on his lips. Diego seems to have it all until fate suddenly grips him in the guise of an antique Fender Stratocastor.

Though he is warned by its owner that the instrument is cursed, Diego refuses to take no for an answer, but will he pay the ultimate price?

Falling in love with the Strat, and the mysterious woman who begins to visit nightly, he and his guitar rock the stage. It isn't until the instrument begins to leave a bloody trail everywhere he goes that Diego realizes the curse is real, and his mystery lover's life is also at stake. In an instant, it becomes a choice between destroy or be destroyed, but will Diego have the strength?

good, but left wanting more!
The Guitarist - Lindy S. Hudis

Independent reviewer for Archaeolibrarian, I was gifted my copy of this book.

Diego is a god. a rock god, no less. He buys an antique Fender Stratocaster guitar with a twenty thousand dollar price tag, and a warning. It's cursed. He doesn't believe in such things, until people are being harmed by the guitar, and a strange woman visits him at night. When those visits take a darker turn, Diego knows he has to do something, but what? Only a god can break a curse. oh, but he is a god!

Far too short!

45 minutes reading time, for me and I'm left wanting more.

More of Diego. More of the guitar, because, clearly, it has a mind of it's own. More of the woman and how she came to be attached to the guitar. Simply, more!!

I liked the ending though! Because I don't know if that means the cycle is starting again, or something entirely different might happen. Again, I'm left wanting more!

I'd like to read something else by this author, something longer, with multiple points of view.

3 stars

Strum: Romance Novel Heroes and Heroines Who Play Guitar
Once Upon a Rose (La Vie en Roses) (Volume 1) - Laura Florand
The Companion Contract - Solace Ames
Deep (Stage Dive Series Book 4) - Kylie Scott
Maybe Someday - Colleen Hoover
Backstage Pass - Olivia Cunning
Never Enough - Lauren Dane
Geek with the Cat Tattoo - Theresa Weir
A Plain Love Song (The New Hope Amish Book 3) - Kelly Irvin
Fire Watcher - Lilith Saintcrow
Temptation - Robin Covington

Wickedly talented fingers ... Sounds good to me.

Here are some wonderful Romance Novels where the hero or heroine play guitar.

1. Once Upon a Rose by Laura Florand

She stole his roses.

Fleeing the spotlight, burnt out rock star Layla—“Belle”—Dubois seeks refuge in the south of France. That old, half-forgotten heritage in a valley of roses seems like a good place to soothe a wounded heart. She certainly doesn’t expect the most dangerous threat to her heart to pounce on her as soon as she sets foot on the land.

He wants them back.

Matt didn’t mean to growl at her quite that loudly. But—his roses! She can’t have his roses. Even if she does have all those curls and green eyes and, and, and…what was he growling about again?

Or maybe he just wants her.

When an enemy invades his valley and threatens his home, heart, and livelihood, Matthieu Rosier really knows only one way to defend himself.

It might involve kissing.

And that might be just the start.

2. The Companion Contract by Solace Ames

Control. Submission. Power.

Amy Mendoza knew she'd never have a Cinderella story. She walked away from the ashes of her childhood on her own, and signed her first porn contract the day she turned eighteen. The money's been good, but it's time to walk away again before the life drags her down. When a mysterious stranger offers her an unusual contract—sexual companion to a recently relapsed rock star—she accepts.

Amy quickly and gratefully falls into an easy rhythm of control and submission—but it's not her client who keeps her up at night. Emanuel, lead guitarist and the man who hired her, occupies her thoughts—and soon, her bed. Their connection is intense, and although Amy knows sleeping with Emanuel isn't what she's there for—isn't what she's being paid for—what's between them is too strong to ignore. But there's more to Emanuel than Amy knows, and submitting to him might come at too high a price…

3. Deep by Kylie Scott

Positive. With two little lines on a pregnancy test, everything in Lizzy Rollins' ordinary life is about to change forever. And all because of one big mistake in Vegas with Ben Nicholson, the irresistibly sexy bass player for Stage Dive. So what if Ben's the only man she's ever met who can make her feel completely safe, cherished, and out of control with desire at the same time? Lizzy knows the gorgeous rock star isn't looking for anything more permanent than a good time, no matter how much she wishes differently.

Ben knows Lizzy is off limits. Completely and utterly. She's his best friend's little sister now, and no matter how hot the chemistry is between them, no matter how sweet and sexy she is, he's not going to go there. But when Ben is forced to keep the one girl he's always had a weakness for out of trouble in Sin City, he quickly learns that what happens in Vegas, doesn't always stay there. Now he and Lizzie are connected in the deepest way possible . . . but will it lead to a connection of the heart?

4. Maybe Someday by Colleen Hoover

At twenty-two years old, Sydney has a great life: She's in college, working a steady job, in love with her wonderful boyfriend, Hunter, and rooming with her best friend, Tori. But everything changes when she discovers Hunter's cheating on her--and she is left trying to decide what to do next.

Sydney becomes captivated by Ridge, her mysterious neighbor. She can't take her eyes off him or stop listening to the passionate way he plays his guitar every evening out on his balcony. And there's something about Sydney that Ridge can't ignore, either. When their inevitable encounter happens, they soon find themselves needing each other in more ways than one...

5. Backstage Pass by Olivia Cunning

For him, life is all music and no play...

When Brian Sinclair, lead songwriter and guitarist of the hottest metal band on the scene, loses his creative spark, it will take nights of downright sinful passion to release his pent-up genius...

She's the one to call the tune...

When sexy psychologist Myrna Evans goes on tour with the Sinners, every boy in the band tries to seduce her. But Brian is the only one she wants to get her hands on...

Then the two lovers' wildly shocking behavior sparks the whole band to new heights of glory...and sin...

6. Never Enough by Lauren Dane

Gillian Forrester spent her life running...until Miles came along. The moment she held her older sister's unwanted newborn, Gillian stopped running and began building a life for her adopted son. Now, thirteen years later, Gillian's sister reveals the father's identity on her deathbed-a revelation that shakes Gillian to her core.

Adrian Brown is the epitome of the successful rock star. It takes a lot to shock him-but the bombshell that he has a son rocks his world. And Adrian is even more surprised when the buttoned-up elegant woman who's raising him ignites his erotic and romantic attention-and engages his heart.

7. Geek with the Cat Tattoo by Theresa Weir

Beauty and the geek…

Shy music geek Emerson Foshay breaks into a cold sweat and is rendered speechless whenever Lola Brown, the girl of his dreams, steps into his guitar shop. But once a stray cat named Sam follows him home, everything changes and Emerson becomes the coolest guy in town.

Setting: Minneapolis, Minnesota

Cast of main characters:

Emerson Foshay, shy music geek
Lola Brown, Melody's (Girl With the Cat Tattoo) sister
Sam the cat, Max's (Girl With the Cat Tattoo) brother

8. A Plain Love Song by Kelly Irvin

Adah Knepp wants nothing more than to make music. It’s all she’s ever desired—to sing and play the guitar and write her own songs. That’s a dream that will never come true in the confines of her strict Amish community. But then she meets Jackson Hart, and all of a sudden she finds the chance for a different kind of life. A real stage, a real guitar, and a real opportunity to sing her songs to a real audience!

But pursuing her dreams means turning her back on her family and community—and saying goodbye to Matthew, the gentle Amish farmer she can’t get out of her mind. Is it worth giving up the only home she’s ever known to pursue her dreams?

9. Fire Watcher by Lilith Saintcrow

The Fire Witch

Elise Nicholson isn’t your ordinary witch. For one thing, she can light candles with a look, and she plays a mean guitar. Unfortunately, being able to call fire out of the air isn’t the most useful skill around. To top it off, she’s a Guardian of the City, and the other Guardians—her two best friends—have no time for her. They’re too busy with their Watchers, the grim, black-coated warriors sworn to protect Elise and her friends from the Dark. Lonely, skating the edge of controlling her intensified “gifts,” Elise is quickly running out of options and patience. Then the Trifero—a Talisman capable of blowing the city sky-high—lands in her lap, and everything just gets worse.

The Watcher:

Remy is the Hunter, snatching Talismans away from the Dark and struggling with the constant agony of being a Watcher. Then he’s assigned to stand guard over a smart-mouthed fire witch who not only hates Watchers, but has just found the Trifero. If the Dark catches Elise, she’ll be broken, turned into a magical weapon, and sold to the highest bidder. Not only does Remy have to get to her first and keep the Dark away, but he also must convince Elise that he means her no harm—and that’s the easy part of the job. If he pulls this one off, he just might redeem himself the way every Watcher aches to do. But if he fails, both he and Elise might be better off dead . . .

10. Temptation by Robin Covington

he needs to be good.

At sixteen, Kit ditched her crappy life and moved to Nashville with only $200, her guitar, and a notebook full of songs. She hit it big, but five years of living like a rock star plus a stint in rehab has killed any good will she had with her label. The suits have ordered Kit to shape up or ship out of the limelight. The last thing she needs is a hot, sexy distraction with a sinful smile.

He doesn’t know the meaning of the word.

Max Butler is as far from a celebrity as you can get and he likes it that way. A Nashville firefighter, he’s living the single life with a revolving door of parties, friends, and a different woman in his bed every night. When his normal life suddenly collides with the girl on his favorite Rolling Stone cover, he sees the perfect chance to fulfill his ultimate fantasy and see just how bad Kit can be.

Sometimes bad is so very good.

With three weeks until Kit leaves for her big tour, Max promises to give her a break from being the good girl--no strings attached. But when hot days lead to sultry nights, the lines get blurred and suddenly three weeks of bad might not be good enough.

The Replacement Guitarist - Lori Toland

This just didn't work for me, and unfortunately it was the writing. From the beginning it was that sappy, unexplained kind of insta-love. Then two completely stupid miscommunications where literally all Blaze had to do was say, "no" but he "froze" so a shitstorm ensues.  And just ridiculously cheesy lines "And when you walked up to me and put your arms around me, I saw heaven." Gag. Not to mention the least sexy, unemotional cherry-popping. Ever.

Small inconsistencies:
1) Blaze commented that he hated his real name and about how he got his nickname, but we never found out why or how.

2) Blaze's short-term memory loss - he told Jenny he didn't have her number, but then 1 paragraph later commented that he texted her. "He wondered how Jason had known he was interested in a threesome"... ummm, because you told him a few chapters ago, that's how.

3) Both of them constantly seeming surprised when the other one tells him how much he loves him. Why is this shocking?!? You've said it fifty-thousand times so far, nothing new. And yes, you're both hot. We know. You know. Stop acting so effen surprised every time someone points it out.

4) Jason's parents.  That was so random and a good point to develop their relationship but instead, no let's just have 10 more sex scenes.

5) Blaze's parents.

6) Cassie, a Bitch just because?

So in the end, I think this would have made an OK short-story. That's really how much substance it contained unfortunately. There just wasn't enough meat to carry 191 pages. I like sex scenes as much as the next gal, but the second half of the book was literally one after another after another after another. It gets old.

The Replacement Guitarist
The Replacement Guitarist - Lori Toland 3.5 Stars

This is one book that has left me torn. I absolutely love the premise of this book. I am totally in love with Blaze, but I wish I knew Jason better. I don’t know if this was intentional on the author’s part, but Jason kept pretty quiet about his past. I hope that Jason shares more about himself and his past in the next book because I am completely rooting for these two men.

The author did leave plenty of room for more stories. I am very interested to see if Cassie lets her issues with Blaze and Jason go, and I want to see if the two men will be able to make it work after Blaze goes on the European leg of the tour.

I am just going to have to read the next book to find out, and you can bet I will.
