I'm feeling uncomfortable

My non-fiction reading is fairly broad, but when it comes to fiction -- and especially romance -- I've not been as diligent about diversity.

I'm therefore making a concerted effort to read more diverse romance stories.  I won't necessarily review them all, because I'm not sure I'm qualified to.  At least not yet.

The one I started a few nights ago is bothering me.  The writing is fine.  The author is prolific and has good reviews.

I am just completely turned off by the male main character.  He's 17, walks around with a handful of condoms in his pocket, brags about how much he likes sex, refers to his teen-aged girlfriend as his "fuck buddy."  He sets his sexual sights on a 24-year-old woman.

For her part, she doesn't brush him off.  He's physically attractive, so she lets him proceed with his attempted conquest.

I'm not very far into the book but I'm already uncomfortable.  Not because she's older than he is, but because one of them is a minor and the other one doesn't seem to take that into consideration, and because one of them seems to see sexual partners as . . . disposable.

I'm not sure I can set this aside enough to continue reading.  Maybe this author can pull it off over the course of the story, or maybe I should try another of her books.  But this so far as given me a really negative feeling.

New Release Review! Reawakening Their Bears (Weres and Witches of Silver Lake #12) Vella Day!

TGIF Readers! Today  I am visiting Silver Lake to revisit Kalan Murdoch and Elana Stanley to find out if they can save the connection they've lost! Enjoy and don't forget to add REAWAKENING THEIR BEARS by Vella Day to your shelves!

Catching Her Bear was just the start of Kalan Murdoch and Elana Stanley's story. Follow along as Vella Day revisits this couple from Book 2 of the Weres and Witches series.

To say werebear Detective Kalan Murdoch is stressed out would be an understatement. Between trying to solve murders, muggings, and miscellaneous crimes in Silver Lake, he wants to spend time with his two adorable kids and beautiful mate. Too bad he fails most of the time. If only he could learn to juggle the job and his family, he'd be totally content.

Elana is also frustrated. While her floral shop is going well--okay better than well--things at home are not. Her super sexy mate, Kalan, works late almost every night, and their five-year old son keeps asking why his father isn't home--and she can't blame him for being upset. Elana wants more of Kalan too.

It isn't until their home is broken into that Elana and Kalan have to work together to bring down the group responsible and to help save a friend who's been taken by the Changelings. But will their journey be enough to save what connection they've lost?

Both werebear Detective Kalan Murdoch and his mate Elana is stressed out and frustrated. With work interfering, their home life is suffering and they can’t seem to find a way to juggle all the responsibilities of home and work. When their home is broken into, Kalan and Elana have to work together to bring down the group responsible and to help save a friend. But will their journey be enough to save what connection they’ve lost?

This romance is hot, passionate, emotionally gripping and oh so sweet as Kalan and Elana strive to reconnect as life continuously interferes. The chemistry between the two is definitely still there and still quite electrical so the passion in their lives when they find the time is still hot and steamy but the happy and warm feeling is missing as Elana and their children hardly ever get to spend time with Kalan which has lots of emotions flowing from the pages that readers can’t help but get caught up in.

The story is fast paced and has lots of suspense and excitement as well as a series of crimes has Kalan thinking that the Changelings are back and up to no good once again. Some unexpected twists keeps readers on their toes but it the emotionally gripping and heartwarming romance between Kalan and Elana that keeps readers glued to the pages of this story.

Not only do I love to read, write, and dream, I'm an extrovert. I enjoy being around people and am always trying to understand what makes them tick. My books must have a happily ever after,  and I need characters I can relate to. My men are wonderful, dynamic, smart, strong, and the best lovers in the world (of course).

I love to sleep in late and write into the wee hours. I also love FB, so you'll find me on there, too!

I believe I am the luckiest woman. I do what I love and I have a wonderful, supportive husband, who happens to be hot!

Fun facts about me

        (1) I'm a math nerd who loves spreadsheets. Give me numbers and I'll find a pattern.

        (2) My husband and I recently moved to Costa Rica where we are trying to learn Spanish while we enjoy the beautiful beaches!!

        (3) I love photos, so check me out on Instagram as @dayvella.

Review! Once Upon a Moon by Cheyenne Meadows!

TGIF Readers! Today I am visiting Minnesota where a young woman discovers that her new dog...isn't a dog! Enjoy and don't forget to add ONCE UPON A SNOWY MOON by Cheyenne Meadows to your shelves!

When her date bails on her, Tara decides she's had it with men. On her way home from the disastrous date, she hits a large dog with her car. There's no question she's keeping him. After all, dogs are faithful—unlike the men in her life.

Max is on the run after he and his alpha escape a violent coup. Exhausted, he doesn't see the car until it's too late, but he does see the woman who mistakenly believes he's a dog. While she takes care of him, Max has to figure out what's next, while keeping the woman he's beginning to fall for safe from his enemies.

Tara's new dog is everything she hoped for, but there's one major problem—he's not a dog. He's a wolf shifter. Now Max must convince her to trust him at the same time that he's trying to save his alpha's life. Until that happens, love is not in the picture—for him or Tara.

Tara has had it with men, so when hits a large dog with her car, there’s no question that she’s keeping him. After all, dogs are faithful – unlike the men in her life. Max is on the run after he and his alpha escape a violent coup, exhausted he doesn’t see the car until it’s too late. While the woman takes care of him, Max has to figure out what his next move is, while keeping the woman he’s beginning to fall for safe.

This paranormal romance is a wonderful story that easily pulls readers in and refuses to let go. The characters are strong and quite captivating and the emotional turmoil of the story is heart tugging while also being sweet. That being said the story also has cheerful and fun side as Tara takes care of her new dog unknowing that he is really a wolf shifter.

The plot is fast paced and keeps readers in suspense throughout as readers wonder how Max is going spring his surprise on Tara, if his enemies will find him and how Tara will handle the surprise once the secret is out. The story also builds excitement and suspense when Max’s enemies do arrive and bring Max to the attention of another pack and then there is the added suspense of Tara having to decide whether to leave her old behind and move forward or sticking it out where she’s at and readers can’t help but become completely caught up in all the thrills and romance of this wonderful story.

Growing up in the Midwest, I began reading romance novels in high school, immediately falling in love with the genre, to the point where I decided to write professionally for a career. However, that dream splattered against a brick wall and resulting quick death in my first writing class in college when my professor told me bluntly that I wasn't any good at it.

I shifted gears quickly, and left my writing dreams behind, eventually settling on being a nurse. A few years back, I stumbled across a fan-fiction writing site on a favorite author's webpage. I began to read stories others wrote, not only making some wonderful close friends from the experience, but also, really learning to write for the very first time. Here I was able to share short stories, practice my writing skills, and truly develop into a writer. More than that, the experience allowed me to revitalize my dream, as I rediscovered joy in writing.

When I'm not working or writing, I enjoy working in the garden, canning, and seeing my backyard as a living canvas for my whimsical landscaping, and, of course, reading romance

Then Cecily’s best friend Lila begins to ditch her every time Lila’s boyfriend calls. Cecily feels lost, but she and Andrew begin connecting more and she’s never been in a relationship where she felt so understood. Andrew even begins to confide in her about his anxiety. Soon Cecily experiences her own anxiety on a magazine photo shoot, but she manages to impress the magazine staff. Just when it seems like all her dreams are coming true, everything comes crashing down when a photo of Andrew with another girl appears online. He swears nothing happened, but Cecily is crushed. She feels like she’s lost two of the people closest to her. Was her perfect relationship real or was she in over her head?

Can Dreams Come True? (The Cecily Taylor Series #1)

Cecily has always had a huge crush on singer Andrew Holiday and she wants to be an actress, so she tags along when her friend auditions for his new video. However, the director isn’t looking for an actress, but rather the girl next door—and so is Andrew. Cecily gets a part in the video and all of Andrew’s attention on the set. Her friend begins to see red and Cecily’s boyfriend is seeing green—as in major jealousy. A misunderstanding leaves Cecily and her boyfriend on the outs and Andrew hopes to pick up the pieces as he’s looking for someone more stable in his life than the models he’s dated. Soon Cecily begins to realize Andrew understands her more than her small-town boyfriend—but can her perfect love match really be her favorite rock star?

“Good luck at the photo shoot tomorrow,” he said. “You’ll be great.”
I stared out the window on the ride back to the hotel taking in all the sites. As I walked into the hotel I felt a new air of confidence. Instead of just reading about someone going out with a pop star to some fabulous rooftop hotel restaurant and being in the big city, I was living it. This was my life and not some YA book heroine’s. Tomorrow I was off on a modeling shoot. I was living a dream and proving how I was ready for a big life. This was my destiny. I could do this.
My alarm went off and at the same time an alarm went off in my brain saying, no, I could not do this. What was I thinking? Me, model? That’s where people take photos of you for the sole purpose of other people looking at them, which encouraged judgement and evil comments. People don’t just keep those comments to themselves anymore. Oh no, they grab their phone or laptop or whatever device helps them spew out unhelpful and cruel comments on people’s appearances online for all the world to see.
My stomach felt like spewing all over the nice hotel sheets I was wrapped in.  Why did I ever think I was up for this? Those strangers online would destroy me within seconds. Girls like Harlow who were born with an undeniable beauty could do stuff like this and even then, I had seen strangers criticize her online when she posted selfies.
Being anxious always made all my senses go nuts. I ate two slices of toast and then my stomach did a weird flipping thing. Oh no, not today. Looking over at the clock I realized it was almost time for us to leave. Come on, stomach. You’re fine. Just relax and…nope, time to hit the bathroom. Why can’t I just be a big girl and go to this stupid shoot which most girls would kill to do without my stomach freaking out?
