BOOKSHOTS: Social satire ftw
Happy Mutant Baby Pills - Jerry Stahl

Happy Mutant Baby Pills

Who wrote it?

Jerry Stahl, best known for drug addiction memoir, Permanent Midnight, which was turned into a film starring Ben Stiller.

Plot in a Box:

A corporate hack slash junkie stumbles his way through the dull wave of the directionless malaise that is the 2010's.

Invent a new title for this book:

HEROIN! …. Wait, What Was I Talking About?

Read this if you liked:

Syrup By Max Barry, Choke By Chuck Palahniuk, Chump Change By Dan Fante

Meet the book’s lead:

Lloyd, former MFA day dreamer turned corporate hack who is in massive denial regarding his crippling addiction to the big H.

Said lead would be portrayed in a movie by:

Here's my problem with most Jerry Stahl novels: I always picture the lead as Jerry Stahl. So, I'm going to say, instead, Matthew McConaughey at his Dallas Buyers Club weight.

Setting: Would you want to live there?

Happy Mutant Baby Pills is, in part, a road novel, but huge chunks of it take place in shithole Los Angeles, so, no.

What Was Your Favorite Sentence?

'You're right,' I replied, and recited another slogan I would never sell. 'Prius. On the right side of history, on the wrong side of cool.'

What's coming out this week? LOTS OF BOOKS!
Want Not - Jonathan Miles
The Pure Gold Baby - Margaret Drabble
Happy Mutant Baby Pills - Jerry Stahl
Furious Cool: Richard Pryor and the World That Made Him - David Henry,Joe Henry
USA Noir: Best of the Akashic Noir Series - Johnny Temple
Red Sky in Morning - Paul Lynch

Wow - this is going to be an epically busy week for me. Six Bookshots due to be posted  (kapow!). Thankfully, I'm not writing them all, although I was lucky enough to grab Jonathan Miles Want Not from the pile (smacking off all the other eager hands) because Miles is an author I've wanted to read for a while.

All I'll say right now, is that the only thing that disappointed me about Want Not is that it came to an end. Discovering a new author whole work I liked so much gives me a nice warm feeling which will last for weeks. As a counterpoint. The Pure Gold Baby is by an author I have liked for years. Does Margaret Drabble's latest book live up to her previous work? You'll find out on Thursday.

Even with those excellent reads of my own, I'm still jealous I had to let reviewer Naturi Thomas read Furious Cool - the biography of Richard Pryor, because comedians fascinate me and Pryor is probably one of the best stand ups the world has ever known. As for Jerry Stahl's weird and funny Happy Mutant Baby Pills, USA Noir from the Akashic Press and Paul Lynch's dark debut Red Sky in Morning well I'm jealous I didn't get to read these too, because they all sound brilliant.

But if I'm pea-green I'm also grateful. The Bookshots reviewers do an incredible job, often (because of the way publishing works) given very little time to read their picks, yet still firing off pithy, relevant reviews like so many literary AK47s and leaving me free to do some reading of my own. They are an arsenal to be proud of!
