It's Only a Nightmare!
Nightmares! - Jason Segel,Karl Kwasny,Kirsten Miller

This was a neat little audiobook. I know Jason Segel as an actor, but he's a pretty good writer as well. It was a nice bonus that he narrated the story. I only gave it three stars because it wasn't ground-breaking for me. I thought it was a cute idea, and I liked the message about conquering your deepest fears, and dealing with grief. I felt bad for Charlie's step-mother, whom he treated really awfully, because of the fact that she wasn't his mother and his dad and brother seemed to be moving on and he wasn't. I actually thought stepmom Charlotte was pretty interesting. I would have liked more interactions between her and Charlie, especially more positive when he dealt with his issues towards her. Ultimately, this never got to the point that I didn't want to turn it off when I had something else to do.

The nightmare world was a bit creepy. The descriptions and the characterizations of the the nightmare realm were on point. I think for a young reader, it might be genuinely scary. Some of the nightmare characters were actually the real draw of this book, like Meduso and his mother (you know who). And who would have thought a clown would be a good guy (yes I do have a bit of coulrophobia).

I think this is one you definitely want to get the audiobook for. I think it's the best way to experience this book.

My review of Splendors and Glooms
Splendors and Glooms - Laura Amy Schlitz

Book Title:

Splendors and Glooms

Author: Laura Amy Schlitz

Book details: 384 pages Published August 28th 2012 by Candlewick

My review: This is a fantastic children's book with very dark subject matter that make reading it as an adult all the more amazing. Clara Wintermute  the daughter of a wealthy family is the only remaining child of a wealthy doctor and his wife. Originally there were at least 4 more kids but I believe they were accidentally given something to eat that was poison.  But I can't recall of the top of my head because I don't actually own the book. I borrowed it from the Library. Clara wants a puppet show to perform at her birthday party. So she invites  Gaspare Grisini and there two young assistants  Lizzie Rose and Parsefall. When Gaspare Grisini shows up after the performance is over and Clara goes missing. Her parents are struck with grief and  are desperate to find her at any cost.  Only for Parsefall to later discover that she had been turned into a puppet that resembles her. Heres the creepy part, she can not move on her own. Someone most pull the strings.
Lizzie Rose and Parsefall go on  journey to find a witch who promises them a fortune on her death bed and free Clara from her puppet body. With incredibly  dark subject matter and hints at things like pedophilia child abuse child abduction and child labor this is a fantastic edge of your seat. Heart pounding chiller of a book and I highly recommend it!
