The Enchantress Returns
The Land of Stories: The Enchantress Returns - Chris Colfer

This is a great series that twists the fairy tales we know and love and makes them into an amazing story with loads of adventure and excitement. Love it and can't wait to read more.

THE LAND OF STORIES: THE ENCHANTRESS RETURNS by Chris Colfer
The Land of Stories. The Enchantress Returns - Chris Colfer
So the Enchantress who cursed Sleeping Beauty is back for revenge.  She will stop at nothing to get all the kingdoms in Fairy Tale land to bow to her and give her their thrones.  Little is she expecting the twins to show up or Alex to stand up to her.

Wow, what a lot of action and adventure in this rollicking tale.  Fairy Godmother is trying to keep Alex and Connor safe but they are determined to get back to the Land of Stories by any method possible even if it means tricking Mother Goose.  They manage to get back and start the quest to stop the Enchantress.  They meet up again with old friends who help them on their quest.  Even the trolls and goblins are not what they expect.  Unexpected twists happen throughout their quest and this story.  I could not put it down.  I loved reacquainting myself the with characters and meeting some new ones.  Some give a little towards the quest and some give all.  Well worth reading!

THE LAND OF STORIES: THE WISHING SPELL by Chris Colfer
The Land of Stories: The Wishing Spell - Chris Colfer
Alex and Connor are drawn into the land where fairy tales exist.  They meet Snow White, Red Riding Hood, Goldilocks, Sleeping Beauty, and Cinderella as well as the bad guys--gnomes, trolls, ogres, etc.  They are trying to find their way home and were told of a wishing spell that will get them there.  Now all they have to do is find the ingredients for this spelling, make it, and wish.

Excellent world building here.  I enjoyed the characters and the story line.  The characters are not what you expect but perfect for this world.  I liked the twists and turns that got Alex and Connor into trouble or safety.  It was fun.  It held my interest.  It made me want to read the next book (which I just ordered.)  Perfect for the whole family.

Land of Stories - The Wishing Spell (audiobook)
The Land of Stories: The Wishing Spell - Chris Colfer

Audience: Middle Grade

Format: Audiobook/Library

The dungeon was a miserable place.

- first sentence

This is the first book in the 6-book Land of Stories series and it is fabulous. Twins Alex and Conner Bailey find themselves in a land where fairy tales are real. The land consists of multiple kingdoms such as the Sleeping Kingdom (ruled by Sleeping Beauty & King Charming) and the Dwarf Forest. All your fairy-tale favorites are here, the heroes and the villains. The twins are desperately searching for the ingredients to the Wishing Spell which is their only hope to go home. Along the way, they encounter a talking frog, trolls, Queen Red Riding Hood, the wanted criminal Goldilocks, and even the Evil Queen (among others).

This book is loved by many students in our school and kids who start it don't want to put it down. There are a couple of instances where the language might be objectionable to parents (harlot, floozy), but it wouldn't keep me from letting my kids read the book. Overall the story emphasizes persistence, empathy, and kindness in the face of danger and hopeless situations.

I would recommend to grades 4 & up.

The Wishing Spell
The Land of Stories: The Wishing Spell - Chris Colfer
Land of Stories, Book 1

I Picked Up This Book Because: I needed to switch up genres to try and break my reading slump and this has been on my TBR for quite some time.

The Characters:

Alex & Carter Bailey:
A host of fairytale characters including Snow White, The Evil Queen, the huntsman, Red Riding Hood

The Story:

The writing was quite basic though that is not surprising for a middle grade book I guess. I liked the premise but the execution was lacking to me. It moved along at a good pace and did not drag. I think it kept my attention okay. I wasn’t glued to it or racing to pick it up but I don’t feel like I zoned out much either. I finished this much quicker than I thought I would. I’m trying to push through a slump so when I was ready to quit I kicked it up to 1.25X speed. It helped.

I liked the Land of Stories but it’s not a place I see myself returning anytime soon.

The Random Thoughts:
