Book review - Key West Dead (Jake Wolfe Book 6) by Mark Nolan
Key West Dead (Jake Wolfe Book 6) - Mark Nolan
Welcome to another adventure with Jack and Cody as they attend a wedding the newly married couple are blown up on their boat as they sail away to happiness. Obviously, this action brings our intrepid duo into yet another dangerous and exciting adventure, can they catch the mastermind behind the explosion before they cause any more financial and economical damage to the affluent Florida Keys area?

In taking on the role of investigators Jake not only puts himself in danger but his close friends and loved ones. How can he keep not only himself safe but those close to him as well? The author takes us on another exciting adventure using his knowledge and research to great effect.

You can not help feeling the pressure and sharing the emotions that Jake is feeling as you feel you are riding on Jake’s shoulder as a ghost wanting to warn and help him in his endeavors to catch the criminal who is causing mayhem. Jake’s and Cody relationship are expertly described and you can feel the total and utter trust they have in each other, as well as the fact their rely on each other to make their mission a very successful one.

As usual with Jake and Cody their mission is fraught with danger, taking twist and turns following evidence, making for a rip roaring read. Praise for the author in creating yet another excellent story line keeping the characters, both good and evil, fresh  with new environments and situations as well as giving substance and believability to the actual events which happen.

Where next for Jake and Cody? I cannot wait to find out!

Fate
The Mixtape to My Life - Jake Martinez

Justin tends to be inside his head.  Not too many people understand him, and fewer try.  He has a few friends who seem to care.  This year it looks like that may change.  Like everything may change.

Dominic is back and living next door.  The past is catching up to both of them as they realize they may have more in common that they thought.  If he can just tell Justin the truth, and hang on to a friendship that could turn into more, this may be their year.

Characters that move me, well more than one per book is rare.  I found I loved both of this couple as it motivated me to read faster and get to the end.  I was pleased that there was romance, charm, and more among the angst.  So many surprises and a worthwhile read.  Hope we revisit this bunch of friends.  I give this a 4/5 Kitty's Paws UP!

Sycamore Row - 0%
Sycamore Row: A Novel (Jake Brigance) - John Grisham

Oh boy, I am in a real audiobook reading funk. I have almost a hundred acquired audios waiting to be read and can't work up a real interest in any of them. I just DNF'd an Audible monthly freebie that isn't in the catalog here and I'm too lazy to add.

So, since I re-read A Time To Kill recently, and this sequel was available immediately at the library, I'm going to give it a shot.

Fingers crossed!

Stone Cold Bastards
Stone Cold Bastards - Jake Bible

by Jake Bible

This one is listed under both Horror and SciFi & Fantasy, but it has some very light hearted and even funny moments, albeit with a fairly dark premise. Hell has unleashed all its demons and the only thing saving humanity is a ragtag bunch of gargoyles (technically grotesques for most of them) that come to life through blood magic and guard the last cathedral sanctuary on Earth.

Human possession is common and everyone is preparing for the end of days. How cheerful. Yet the characters are quirky and bring more than a few laughs. The story is enjoyable, though heavy on dialogue and character driven with only occasional sojourns into description. I found the effects of having a stone body interesting in how it affected the characters' ability to do things and withstand assaults from the demon possessed humans, though apparently obsidian can cut stone. Flight came down to just magic. Sometimes the author has to either concede Physics or use magic.

Part two threw me a little as it started with some new characters and basically a new storyline, though set in the same time and place. Familiar characters soon joined in, but I found this part slower going than the first. It does have significant plot development though and towards the end I could see how everything fit in.

Part three is pure action, laced with testosterone poisoning. Things get a little gruesome at times and it's not for the squeamish. There were some emotional moments as well, and I found the end satisfying. Overall an enjoyable story with some original elements.
