“Before signing the acceptance offer, you’ll need to know some of the obligations. There will be traveling, often on short notice. I expect you to always be available. There will be numerous meetings, including after-hours board sessions. Late nights are common, and you may have to arrive before dawn. Some Saturdays are expected. Sundays are off limits. The job is salaried. With successful completion, you’ll be awarded a bonus. Are these things you can live with?”

I nodded. “Yes.”

“Cordelia, prepare the personnel action forms for my signature. Also, give her an elevator key card. She’ll also need appropriate digital access to administrative files.”

He turned his attention toward me.

“After lunch, move your things up and familiarize yourself with the top floor. You won’t have time tomorrow.”

After a few clicks on her computer, Cordelia pulled the forms from the printer and handed them to Mr. Mitchell. He scrawled his signature along the line on the bottom of the page before moving around the desk toward me.

“Read over it before signing. I’ll see you in a couple of hours, Ms. Sheridan.”

“Thank you for this opportunity, Mr. Mitchell.”

“We’ll see if you feel that way after a week of working for me.” He raised an eyebrow, wearing a sexy smirk.

“After a week, you might find it’s me who’s two steps ahead of you.” The words flew out of my mouth before I could stop my snarky thoughts from rolling off my tongue.

Exclusive Excerpt:

Stone Mitchell—my worst nightmare. The muscles of his back rippled against his tight-fitting black t-shirt like he’d been molded into it. He had thick brown hair that was made of silk, softer than silk…my hands remembered exactly how soft. In a complete stupor, I let go of the handle of the suitcase, causing it to crash against the tiled floor. He spun around, tossed a dish towel over his shoulder, and froze mid-spin. Icy topaz eyes met my disgusted glare head on. “What the hell are you doing here?” he bit out. “Stone…” My heart screamed for me to bolt, but I didn’t take a single step. “I asked you what the hell you’re doing here.” He tossed the kitchen towel across the countertop and folded his arms across this chest. “I-I’m supposed to be here. Why are you here?” “This is the last place you’re supposed to be.” This had to be the most jacked-up karma in the world. Nausea rolled into the pit of my stomach and my nails dug into the palms of my hand. The cocky bastard wore the same expression he’d worn all those years ago. “Dovie sent me.” My voice was barely above a whisper. “Why the hell would my grandmother send you to my house?” Behind him, foamy liquid spilled over the rim of the stockpot, filling the room with popping sounds as the contents ran onto the burner and sizzled. “Shit!” He whirled around, quickly moving it. My mind formulated a hundred different scenarios to rationalize what was happening, but one thought screamed louder than the rest: Get the hell out of here. I seized the opportunity, grabbed my bag, and ran like hell. Bolting out of the house, I took the steps off the deck two at a time, my suitcase bouncing all around behind me. Halfway down, wind whipping my hair against my face, I heard the door slam above then heavy footsteps closing in behind me. Sheets of rain blew underneath the house, stinging my skin. Adrenaline fueled my feet as I reached the sedan’s door handle, seconds away from leaving the biggest mistake of my life behind. “Why are you here? No way did Gammy send you here,” he called out as he kept walking toward me like a predator. “I’m here because she offered me this place for the summer. I don’t know… She didn’t send me here knowing you were here.” She couldn’t have. My Dovie would never have done that to me…or to him. Only steps away, he showed no sign of stopping, so I spun back around to make my great escape. He caged in my body against the car, not touching me, but so close that if I moved at all, I would land against either his arms or chest. He pressed the frame of the door closed. “Get away from me. I’m leaving, and I just want to forget I ever saw you.” “Liar. You won’t forget. I don’t think you’ve ever forgotten…” He leaned in closer, stopping when his mouth was against my ear. “You’ve never forgotten how you whispered my name into my ear, over and over again.” His words repulsed me. I hated him. “I remember you being the biggest mistake of my life.” “Turn around.” “Go to hell.” “I earned my free ticket to hell a long time ago. Turn around, Avery.” The way my name rolled off his tongue caused my breath to catch; it always had. I despised the fact that he still possessed the power to make my traitorous body react. He was and always would be toxic. Forbidden. Poison. I’d had a taste, and it had nearly killed me. Now, I knew better than to bite the apple. He pressed his chest against my back, and old memories trespassed into my mind. No matter how hard I’d tried, I’d never forgotten the last night we’d spent together. Under an audience of a million twinkling stars, we had slept on a blanket on the edge of Cotton Wilson’s private lake. That night had been beautiful. Perfect. Two days later, Stone was long gone, and thanks to social media and gossiping texts, the people in my small community knew why before I did. “Leave me alone,” I whispered. “I can’t do that. There’s a bad storm coming with high winds and a lot of rain. I know for a fact that the only two motels are full, and by now the ferry has already closed.” There had to be somewhere else for me to stay. A shelter. A church. Hell, even in my car. Another large gust of wind sailed through the air, knocking over the trash bin by the driveway and causing a piece of some sort of metal to blow down the street. He placed his hand on my upper arm in a gentle touch. “Come inside, Avery, before you end up getting hurt.”

Frost (Mist, #2) - Kathryn James I loved this book as much as the first! Frost wastes no time getting back into the action bringing you back to the world you learned to love in Mist. It ties up all the loose ends greatly and the ending was perfect. I especially love how Nell is still true to herself and while she has inevitably changed it is for the better.

Mist
Mist - Kathryn James I loved Mist and the world Kathryn James has created. Nell was a remarkable character easy to connect with. This series is perfect for the younger YA readers while still being entertaining to older readers. The cover is to die for as well. I will definitely be on the lookout for more by Kathryn James.

Mist - Kathryn James Mist opens with Nell going into the ancient wood at the back of her home. Despite her mother’s warnings, she has gone after dark. She’s following the mystery boy, Evan River. Conjecturing how it would be if she died there compared to her sister Gwen, we find out how different they are.

Evan River has been at Woodbridge Community College for a short time and is different from the others with his white hair and dark eyes. The college community do not see him or remember him. Straight away the reader intuits that Nell is different from everyone else as she does.

An interesting confrontation in the woods with another couple of boys from a neighbouring estate had me hooked!

Evan warns Nell that there is danger that night in the woods …

Nell and Gwen’s mother, Jackie, is a cop. Due to the recent powercut she is going to have to do a double shift and so the way is prepared for Gwen’s 16th birthday party to take place in the woods.

Nell can feel the danger in her mind and body but when the church clock strikes midnight, she starts to relax, after all, Evan said that “night” and after midnight it’s a new day. It’s when she relaxes that Gwen is noticed as missing and the adventure begins …

Nell is a fabulous character. Always on the outside of her community, walking to the beat of a different drum to everyone else, she invents an alter-ego who is more daring and allows her to be something she thinks she isn’t. As the plot progresses, she becomes stronger and stronger until finally, she comes into her own… still walking to the beat of a different drum but with her head held high and a strong belief in herself. I adored her!

Another interesting character in Mist is the girls nan, Dru Church. She rides a Harley and goes to festivals. As head of the British Folklore Society, we find out her responsibilities go much deeper than the caretaker of the iron house she lives and works in at the edge of the forest.

The relationship that intrigued me the most was that between Nell and her father, Tom Church. Separated from her mother, Nell doesn’t have a lot of respect for him. By the end of the story, we realise that neither Nell or Tom’s perception of each other has been accurate and a bond begins to form. I can’t wait to see how this develops in Frost!

The Elven world is beautifully crafted and has everything you would expect from a fairytale/folktale (with a few surprises too!) The relationship between Nell and Evan is one that is honest and open despite the differences in their ‘race.’ This is another thing I’m looking forward to being a part of in Frost … their developing connection.

The plot itself is not new, however the subplots are. The way the author combines the myth with the modern is refreshing and gives it a new feeling. I loved it that Lettice, who had been taken in 1913, told her side of the story. Modern technology is used with Google Earth playing a part and the brilliant creation of how Nell uses a modern tool to help her.

You’ll find magic, mystery, suspense and intrigue in Mist. The characters and their relationships are brilliant and carried me along on Nell’s quest to find her sister. I’m looking forward to finding out if, and how, it will be possible for the two worlds to live together. Definitely a YA series to get lost in!

I would like to thank the publishers for providing a copy in exchange for an honest review.
