Emissary - Thomas Locke

This was a difficult read for me that I had a hard time getting into. Emissary felt at the same time too long and missing details about the characters, mainly the main character Hyam, who for some reason only at 21 finds out he has magical powers, after first enjoying his simple life as a farmer.

The rest is a pretty standard fantasy story, where Hyam will prove everyone rather quickly why he is such a special boy and fights some battles. The problem is that even though Hyam is really at the core of the story, I didn't feel like I got to know him at all. Also, the romantic angle I didn't care for.

I won't be continuing this series, it was not for me.

Thanks to the publisher and Netgalley for providing me with a free copy of this book in exchange for an honest review!

Legends of the Realm Book One
Emissary - Thomas Locke

This was a fantastic novel that I enjoyed thoroughly... Thomas Locke (aka T. Davis Bunn) is really a great writer. It is hard to utter any complaint about this novel but my only one would be that the plot happened so fast! This may have been my own perspective as it has been a very busy month and I have not been able to focus on reading as much as I'd have liked to. I would love to see more world-building.

Cannot wait to grab myself a copy of Book Two: The Merchant of Alyss.

Emissary - Thomas Locke
I received a copy of this book through Goodreads in exchange for an honest review.

Overall, I think this book was well-written and interesting. The plot was good and while it was stretched out throughout this relatively long book, there was enough action between events to keep the reader engaged.

The thing keeping this book from being a great book was the characters. While the characters are developed to some extent with various backstories, I didn't really feel like they were really fleshed out, especially the female characters. Joelle's character was a huge let down for me, because she really just served as a love interest for Hyam. I was fascinated with her backstory (which I have learned is also told in the ebook, The Captive, which may be worth checking out), yet throughout nearly half of the book she is locked up and doesn't really do anything. Even once she gets out, I feel like the person who could have been a really powerful female character is pushed to the side to pretty much just help Hyam along the way, mostly by assisting Trace with magic. I did really like Meda's character and would have loved to learn more about her.

The story was good, but the characters just weren't enough for me. Overall, a decent book with enough magic and mysticism to keep things interesting.

TBR Thursday 19
The Hero and the Crown - Robin McKinley
Island Fire (Island Series Book 1) - Toby Neal
Shady Cross - James Hankins
The Blood of the Fifth Knight - E.M. Powell
Emissary (Legends of the Realm) - Thomas Locke
The Hitchhiker Strain: The Complete Series - Kellie Sheridan

Moonlight Reader started the TBR Thursday, and I think it's a good way to a) show what new books I've got and b) confront myself with my inability to lower my TBR. In fact, since I started recording it, it has risen significantly. I get the feeling I'm doing something wrong here...

I've got absolutely no time, so I've prepared this in advance and it's just the books I received this week. Hopefully, I'll be a bit less stressed next week.

TBR pile currently stands at 258. (+9)

(Netgalley ARCs at 90 (+5))
