REVIEW TOUR & #GIVEAWAY - Illumined Shadows (Treble and the Lost Boys #3) by G.R. Lyons
Illumined Shadows (Treble and the Lost Boys #3) - G.R. Lyons

Illumined Shadows is the third and final book in the Treble and the Lost Boys series, and we finally get Vic's story. You know something big is behind him, due to how he was with Ryley, however, in this book you get the full tragedy of just what exactly happened.

Everything is brought back to Vic when he rescues Colby from the 'Bad Man'. This was a perfect example of how monsters can hide in the light, when Colby only felt safe in the dark. These two have one helluva road to travel, and the rest of the Treble gang are there to help whenever needed.

This book has a trigger warning for a reason! This is a dark story, that doesn't hold its punches, so be warned. However, it is also excellently written, being descriptive enough to get the full horror, without being gratuitous.

I have loved this series, and have no hesitation in recommending it. I will say the only reason this is a 4-star book is simply because I couldn't quite get my head around Colby's age. Due to his lack of growth, he was small for his age (Vic is able to carry him around on his hip!). Due to his lack of education, and the atrocities that happened to him, his mindset is slightly child-like. Couple this with Vic calling him 'My sweet boy', and it became slightly uncomfortable for me to read. I had to keep reminding myself he was actually 22-years-old.

On the whole, this is a fantastic book that finishes off this series with aplomb. Absolutely recommended by me.

* A copy of this book was provided to me with no requirements for a review. I voluntarily read this book, and the comments here are my honest opinion. *

Lost in his own grief, Damien Reynolds hides the man he is behind a mask of jokes and laughter. He’s spent years fooling everyone, including himself, hiding the pain he struggles through every day. Now, Dizzy finds himself assigned to the hardest case Cole Securities has ever taken on. He’s wearing a new kind of mask, one that leaves him questioning the goodness of humankind and the world he lives in.

Surviving this mission is the last thing on his mind. Until the night he’s faced with a difficult choice: To save her or not…

She must find the strength within herself to endure her new life, but as it is once again tossed into the winds of fate, Penny decides enough is enough and vows to fight. Even if it means losing her life.

But fate has a different plan for her, one in the shape of an imposing man, who casts a shadow about her. A man who, at first sight, decides he can’t ignore the fire in her eyes and makes a vow of his own: To protect her at all costs…

Will Dizzy let her into his heart, allowing her to show him there is still good left in this world? Or will the danger swirling around them be a power even love can't overcome?

I only need one reason to say yes, and even though I said no and told him it is a bad idea, the truth is, I wanted to scream "yes” the moment the words slipped from his lips.
As crazy as it sounds and is, this man, this stranger, unnerves and excites me all at the same time. I can’t picture my life without him in it.
“Because I’m not ready to let you go yet,” he murmurs, opening his eyes, letting me see the honesty staring back at me. I gasp at his declaration, and when he continues to talk, I lose my breath. “I will stand by you and protect you. I will give you a good life until all of this can be righted. I will be your friend. I’m not your happily ever after. I’m not the man who can give you the life you dream or the family you want. Our arrangement will be in name only, but I promise, Penny, you will not walk away from our arrangement with a broken heart. I will do everything in my power to protect it.”
I close my eyes and fill my burning lungs with air. His speech started off good, but if he believes I won’t be brokenhearted at the end of all of this, he can think again. I’m already invested, and I can’t seem to figure out when it happened. It’s hard to admit, but he’s already broken my heart a little with his words.
The one thing I can take from his reason is that neither of us is ready to let the other go.

“You saved me, Penny.” His hand finds mine, and he instantly laces our fingers together. I open my mouth to argue, but he keeps going. “I know you're going to tell me that's not true. That I'm the one who saved you. But I'm telling you the truth. The morning before we met, I didn't think I would make it out in one piece when we made our move to take Charles and Armando down.”
“Damien—” I tense beside him, but he squeezes my hand, urging me to let him finish.
“It took nine months to get what I needed to take them down, but during that time, the things I witnessed, the darkness of it all, I didn't know how I could come back from all of that. Then you walked into that room, and the moment our eyes met, it was like the world shifted under my feet and I had a reason to make it out alive. He stares down at our connection, his brow puckered into a frown.
“Damien, please,” I beg, not sure what I’m asking for but needing to close the distance between us. I lean further into him, letting him wrap his arm around my shoulder. I feel like I can’t breathe without touching him and lift my face to nuzzle his neck.
His scent fills my nose, intoxicating me, and the temptation to taste his skin is too much. My mouth touches his neck, and my tongue darts out to run along a corded line. The flavor of his skin bursts across my tongue, and I moan throatily. He tastes salty, manly, intoxicating. It’s a taste I could become addicted to, but one taste isn’t going to be enough. I open my mouth again, this time placing a hungry kiss on his skin, swirling my tongue across it.
He gasps and pulls back, grasping my shoulders with his hands. He’s shocked, and when he looks at me, I expect to see anger burning in his eyes. But it isn’t anger I see. There is something else there, something unfamiliar to me. Whatever it is makes my body tingle in all the right places.
“Damien…” His name is on my lips, but if I’m honest, I wish it were more of his skin. I run my tongue along my bottom lip, searching for any remaining trace of him, addicted to the taste of him already. He watches me attentively, and his brow crinkles with frustration.
His eyes are glued to my mouth, and I know he’s thinking about the only kiss we’ve shared. I wonder if he felt this pull between us then, too.
He leans forward slowly, and right as I think he’s going to close the distance completely and kiss me, he pulls back.
    “We can’t.”

Lost in Paradise by Bridget Blackwood
Lost in Paradise (World in Shadows Book 4) - Simply Styled,Indie-Spired Design,Bridget Blackwood

What happens when you mix a half-merman with a reformed siren - all sorts of salty goodness! Ok so that might have been a little over the top, but this was a really great story. Both Zander and Ianthe were incredibly unique, but with just enough of the traditional lore mixed in to merge the two in a very believable manner.

This next edition of The World in Shadows series get very interesting. Winter is on the hunt for an artifact, sending Zander off on the chase. But he'll need a siren (his arch-enemy) to get the job done. He never expects to find Ianthe - probably the only siren on earth that won't kill him on sight - and now he just needs to convince her to join him in the treasure hunt.

Ianthe is so much, I'm not even sure where to begin. I love her personality so much - soft spoken, but quick to laugh, protective but not afraid to fight back or pull a prank or two (quite hilarious). She plays incredibly well off Zander and I just loved them together.

A couple times the story didn't quite live up to what it promised. A scene fizzled out or didn't quite build up the the excitement I felt like it should have. But others....well others went above and beyond and really pulled me away from reality into an amazing world.

Lost Shadows
Lost Shadows - Julie Elizabeth Powell Lost Shadows - Julie Elizabeth Powell This story follows the experiences of several different people, all with the climaxes of their struggles happening at the same time, completely unknown to anyone else. Several strangers living their lives, seemingly independent of each other, but in reality, effecting each others futures in ways they couldn't imagine. This rich plot keeps the stories of several up-front and important characters spinning in organized chaos, then pulls it all together, making sense of it all in the end.

It was interesting, taking a deep look into the mind of each character. Comparing their separate and unique ways of viewing life and tragedies was akin to a psychological study. All very unique people, made up of different issues and pasts, yet all with the same kind of darkness haunting them. Getting a first hand look at their thoughts, confusion, doubts, and the things they're each hiding from, made for a deep mind-twisting read.

The writing in this book was incredible. Julie Elizabeth Powell was able to keep so many warped minds organized and flowing, laying them out in a story that keeps you on your toes. Overall, I enjoyed this book. While it deals with real issues, pain and life, it's refreshingly deep and left me with a feeling of completion and relief.

*I was given an ecopy of this book, from the author, to read in exchange for an honest review.
