Sins of the past could destroy all of their futures . . .   For generations, Quentin Marsh’s family has seen its share of tragedy, though he remains skeptical that their misfortunes are tied to a centuries-old curse. But to placate his pregnant sister, Quentin makes the pilgrimage to Point Pleasant, West Virginia, hoping to learn more about the brutal murder of a Shawnee chief in the 1700s. Did one of the Marsh ancestors have a hand in killing the chief —the man who cursed the town with his dying breath? While historian Sarah Sherman doesn’t believe in curses either, she’s compelled to use her knowledge of Point Pleasant to uncover the long-buried truth. The river town has had its own share of catastrophes, many tied to the legendary Mothman, the winged creature said to haunt the woods. But Quentin’s arrival soon reveals that she may have more of a stake than she realized. It seems that she and Quentin possess eerily similar family heirlooms. And the deeper the two of them dig into the past, the more their search enrages the ancient mystical forces surrounding Point Pleasant. As chaos and destruction start to befall residents, can they beat the clock to break the curse before the Mothman takes his ultimate revenge? . . .

Mae Clair opened a Pandora’s Box of characters when she was a child and never looked back. Her father, an artist who tinkered with writing, encouraged her to create make-believe worlds by spinning tales of far-off places on summer nights beneath the stars. Mae loves creating character-driven fiction in settings that vary from contemporary to mythical. Wherever her pen takes her, she flavors her stories with conflict, romance and elements of mystery. Married to her high school sweetheart, she lives in Pennsylvania and is passionate about writing, old photographs, a good Maine lobster tail and cats.

Chilling
A Desolate Hour (Point Pleasant) - Mae C... A Desolate Hour (Point Pleasant) - Mae Clair

Growing up an hour from Point Pleasant, WV, I've heard the Mothman stories all my life and was excited to read A Desolate Hour - one take on the Mothman story. What I didn't realize was that this is the third book in Clair's Point Pleasant Series, so I was a bit lost on some things at the beginning of the book. Fortunately, as the story progressed and things started coming together, those things began to make sense and I found myself getting wrapped up in the character's lives. My initial confusion aside, the plot was well thought out and I can only imagine the amount of research that went into the telling of this tale.

There are so many theories about the Mothman and Clair certainly weaves a chilling and engaging tale with one such theory. The story does center on Quentin and Susan and their connection to the Mothman legend, but there are also several other characters that are central to the story. In all honesty, every character in this story was interesting - love them or hate them, they all played their part in this tale.

Overall, A Desolate Hour is everything I would expect from a Paranormal Suspense novel. It's creepy, chilling, engaging, a bit disturbing at times, and keeps a reader turning the pages to see what will happen next.

A Desolate Hour (Point Pleasant, #3)

MY REVIEW

This is the third book in the series, and the finale, so I will do my best to not include spoilers. Just make you want to run right out and buy this mystery series. If you are a creature feature lover, like me, this will be a must read collection you want on your reading shelf.

It’s nice to be back in Point Pleasant, with familiar friends and monsters, waiting for the next adventure to begin.

Book II left me feeling so sad for Mothman and I worry about what will become of him. He has lived for A Thousand Yesteryears, the only one of his kind.

The Ouija Board had foretold QM would become a part of Sarah’s life. WTH is QM?

The curse brought HIM to Point Pleasant.

Caden is a cop in Point Pleasant and knows the Mothman, and others, that I won’t speak about. You’ll have to meet them all yourself…and you might want to have someone with you when you do.

Lach is back and there is always trouble when he makes an appearance.

Stone amulets…a deadly blade…a curse

Shawn and Preech will play their part as the curse rises from the past, demanding retribution. You can never escape the past…innocent or guilty, it just doesn’t matter.

A Desolate Hour, great title by the way, has an aura of menace from the beginning.

“A Desolate Hour when a tear in time renders past and present in one.” How can that be anything but bad news?

When Mothman vanishes for long periods of time and everything is normal in Point Pleasant, I wonder where he goes, what he’s doing. He didn’t ask for his fate. Alone. Isolated. Angry. Suffering.

As the people and forces in Point Pleasant draw together, it is ‘the culmination of A Desolate Hour’, and the door closes on the Mothman’s story. Mae Clair did a bang up job with the ending, leaving me satisfied, but…

I am so sad to be leaving Point Pleasant and the marvelous characters and adventure I have had, but I do not despair. I know Mae Clair has another marvelous story up her sleeve and I aim to get my hands on it.

If you are a creature feature lover, if you crave reading about myths and legends, if you like to be scared and surprised, run and soar through the air, this is one series you don’t want to miss.

A Cold Tomorrow by Mae Clair
A Cold Tomorrow - Mae Clair

Where secrets make their home…

Stopping to help a motorist in trouble, Katie Lynch stumbles upon a mystery as elusive as the Mothman legend that haunts her hometown of Point Pleasant, West Virginia. Could the coded message she finds herald an extraterrestrial visitor? According to locals, it wouldn’t be the first time. And what sense should she make of her young son’s sudden spate of bizarre drawings—and his claim of a late-night visitation? Determined to uncover the truth, Katie only breaks the surface when a new threat erupts. Suddenly her long-gone ex-boyfriend is back and it’s as if he’s under someone else’s control. Not only is he half-crazed, he’s intent on murder….

As a sergeant in the sheriff’s office of the famously uncanny Point Pleasant, Officer Ryan Flynn has learned to tolerate reports of puzzling paranormal events. But single mom Katie Lynch appears to be in very real danger—and somehow Ryan’s own brother, Caden, is caught up in the madness, too. What the skeptical lawman discovers astounds him—and sends him into action. For stopping whatever evil forces are at play may just keep Katie and Caden alive….

**********

I read A Thousand Yesteryears a while back and found it to be an OK book although predictable. So, I was curious to see how the next book in the series would be. Unfortunately, the storyline in this book was not especially memorable. It's for the moment OK kind of book, but it never gets really interesting to read. For me, the best part was the explanation to the Mothman. Unfortunately, this series feels like romance books masquerading as paranormal. Every book is about a couple, and I bet I know what the next book will be about.

If this book had been more about the Mothman legend and less about Ryan Flynn and Katie Lynch getting together would I have found the book more interesting to read. Probably. I don't mind the romance per se, but it's a pattern in every book. And lo and behold it ended with a cliffhanger, or rather I know what "couple" the story will be about in the next book. As for the whole ex-boyfriend back with murder on his mind never really got interesting to read about. And, to be honest the characters are a bit flat in the book.

I'm sorry to be such a downer. It's just that the Mothman is such an interesting creature and I prefer to read something that's more like a book version of X-files, not some paranormal romance, with emphasis on romance. But, if that's your thing, then I guess this book will work for you!

I want to thank the publisher for providing me with a free copy through NetGalley for an honest review!

A Thousand Yesteryears (Point Pleasant) - Mae Clair

Eve lost her father and one of her best friends Maggie the day Silver Bridge collapsed. Right after Eve’s mom signed the hotel over to Aunt Ruth and left with her family. Aunt Rose died of cancer at forty nine and left Eve her house and the Parrish Hotel. Eve was crushing on Caden who was eighteen to her twelve when she left. When Eve gets back to Point Pleasant for the first time in she finds her Aunt Rose’s house had been broke into and the only two rooms completely tore apart was the dark room and her Aunt Rose’s bedroom. Caden i suggested to ask to help her fix the house up . Caden isn’t anything he was meant to be as guilt he felt that he  suggested his  sister Maggie going out. Caden lived and Maggie didn’t and he was being crushed under this overwhelming guilt. There are still rumors that Mothman is around. The Mothman is suppose to be in the region of TNT area that had once stored ammunition during W W I I. Mothman is a giant birdlike humanoid so the myth says and several people have reported seeing it in this area. Eve started getting threatening notes in her car to leave town. Eve also gets odd phone calls that consists of static and clicks.

I liked the story but didn’t love it. The story was fast and some things were predictable. But this story does have: heroes, lies, a killer, murder, suspense, myths, romance, tragedy, greed and more. You did figure who was the killer before the end that was disappointing. I did like this story just didn’t love ir.

I received an ARC of this story for an honest review.
