Loved it!
Artificial Condition: The Murderbot Diar... Artificial Condition: The Murderbot Diaries - Martha Wells

I borrowed a kind friend's ARC, so no spoilers here, but I loved it!  All the charm of the first Murderbot book, with some new revelations and plenty more details about the world.  I loved it just as much as the first.  Definitely pick this series up if you're interested in grumpy AIs who really want to just be left alone to marathon tv (and definitely never ever want to talk about feelings) but maybe kind of secretly like some humans a little anyway.

So much fun!
All Systems Red - Martha Wells

Fun, funny, touching.   This is about Murderbot, although he's got organic parts, so he's not full bot.   He comes from a world where bots are owned, although he's aware enough to know that he's not really happy with this concept.

He's hacked his government module, which forces him to act in certain ways, but not to actually murder anyone.   For a bot who calls himself 'murderbot', he doesn't do much murdering.   And despite everyone calling him 'it' and him being junkless, he reads male to me, which is probably one of the reasons I like him so much.   I lean straight.   So maybe I just want him to be male, so I'm imposing that on him, but it feels wrong to call Murderbot female, or use female pronouns.

He mostly sits around, wanting to watch TV.   Except he has a job to do, and he does so half-heartedly, mostly because he hates people.   Although I think it would be more accurate to say he's an introvert forced to interact with people too much, and the people he does usually interact with treat him like shit.   So when his new job brings him into contact with people who are good and kind to him, he starts to like them.

This is a book about what he'll do to protect them, although there's a lot more to this than that: how do we treat our machinery, especially if they have emotions?   Even self-awareness?   Can you allow others to decide what you do?    There are smaller questions nested inside this fuller story about Murderbot finding out who he is, and trying to be at peace with that given that it's everything he's been told he's not, or not supposed to be.

Murderbot is... interesting.   Al little sarcastic, but mostly thoughtful although he tends to brush it off, pretend it's just a bit of humor or not important.   And he's a quiet thoughtful that I like, so I ended up just falling head over heels for him.    Looking forward to the sequels.

Reading progress update: I've read 74%.
All Systems Red - Martha Wells

Granted, I liked the imaginary people on the entertainment feed way more than I liked real ones, but you can’t have one without the other.

Wells, Martha. All Systems Red (Kindle Single) (The Murderbot Diaries) (p. 117). Tom Doherty Associates. Kindle Edition.

I know, right?   I just want the imaginary ones sometimes...

I was also planning to use the time to watch some Sanctuary Moon and recharge my ability to cope with humans at close quarters without losing my mind.

Wells, Martha. All Systems Red (Kindle Single) (The Murderbot Diaries) (p. 110). Tom Doherty Associates. Kindle Edition.

Murderbot is an introvert, and I love him for so ably describing what introverts need every now and then.

There was no rational reason for me to sound like a whiny human baby.

Whiny human babies are the worst.   The.   Worst.
