Against All Odds - Chuck Norris

Who wouldn't want to read about one of the best kick-butt actors of all time?!
The memoir did not disappoint. Whether you are a fan or not. You are familiar with his work. I was fascinated by some of the things that I didn't know about him, like his name is Carlos and not Chuck.
It was told in a great tone too. Chuck telling his story in a way that suited his Christianity also, which is appreciated. You have to respect a man who is not afraid to love God out loud, as Chuck does.
Great family too. Having children later in life, and his reasoning made sense to me. I almost chose to have later-life babies as well, but did not. I hope it's not a regret that I will one day garner deeply.
Good book though, as far as memoirs go.

Beautiful Scars - Tom Wilson

A coworker lent me this book for two reasons. I read a lot of memoirs, and this guy is a Hamiltonian like us. We see him around the city, the studio he frequents is downtown where I live, so it was cool to learn more about him.
However, I liked him more before I read his story.
So he has a crazy life story, from his birth story to his life as a musician. I just found him to be more arrogant and stuck up which I didn't previously think he was. I liked this cloudy version of a celebrity that I had with knowing so little about him. I just knew the guy that said hi as you passed the studio, not the person inside this book.
It didn't help when he told us about his parents, and his mom was racist. Being Native that hit me in a way I didn't want... you know it kind of put me off from wanting to connect to Tom and his story after that. I know he isn't racist, but just hearing how awful his mom could be made it tough to digest. Like he is Native and she didn't want him to know that. That's messed up!
There were things I really loved about his story though. His feelings on being a dad and how he is there for his kids no matter what. Plus this guy was a huge addict and is sober now. That is always something to respect and applaud.
Sometimes it is better to just be a fan, and not know so much about a person though. Not every story will better than whatever you create in your head.

Almost Interesting - David Spade
Almost Interesting: The Memoir - David Spade,David Spade,HarperAudio
When I saw this one on sale I had to grab it. David Spade is so funny, and I was hoping the book would be too!
It was, and it wasn't. I hate to admit, I liked him more before I read his book.
He's funny, sure, but most of this book was him telling stories about his life. The ones he chose to tell have my eyebrows raised, I mean, maybe he really isn't that interesting after all, but especially with Chris Farley, I was disappointed in what he revealed to us. They really were not the most flattering things, for a guy who says he loved him. You'd figure the tales he told would be more endearing, not embarrassing.
So I feel like I wasted a couple bucks here, but that's ok. Not everyone that you admire will be so admirable in the end.

My Thought's Exactly - Lily Allen

I knew Lily Allen was a celebrity, but honestly, that's where it ended for me. I wasn't sure if it was acting, singing or something else all together. Still, I found this book as a way to learn more.
I felt like I connected with her on so many levels, and disliked her all at the same time. I've never been famous, wrote music or even played in a band, but I was a drug addict and lived a very toxic life for a short time. Those moments in the book, I knew how she felt. I knew why she was doing it. I totally got it!
She is such a narcissist though. She openly admits it too. That is frustrating. It sucks as a reader, trying to get to know her too.
I feel for her. I feel like she should want more for herself since she so candidly tells the reader how she has the means to do what most people can't. But I digress....
Not a book I'd recommend, fan or not. Her fans may not like some of the things she says in this book and the ignorant reader, like me, definitely will not.

The Storyteller - Dave Grohl

So this was the only book that I asked for at Christmas time. I didn't get it, so I bought it for myself!
I am a HUGE Nirvana and Foo Fighters fan! I even love listening to Dave's daughter Violet! Man, that kid has some talent too!
Anyway back to the book! I couldn't wait to open it up and start reading!
Then I went through moments of not wanting to put it down, to having to put it down so it wouldn't end!
I read a bunch of reviews before reading the book, more out of jealousy of them having the book before me, but remember one lady that gave it a 2 star rating citing it as just name-dropping and such. I felt like I disagreed with her immensely. Yeah, there were a ton of names. The guy is a legend touring and meeting his legends... so of course names is gonna get dropped throughout. That's what makes a story. PEOPLE. EXPERIENCES. They all happen with people. People who have names, I might add. When a musician of this guy's caliber tells a story, you better believe it's gonna be his AHA moment about his favorite celebrity. I just don't get that person's logic in their review. My only thinking is they obviously don't like his type of music to begin with. Sorry for them.
K, so back to the book. It was awesome! It felt like Dave was talking to you, not you reading a book. You felt his gratitude and how humble he was those times when he met his idols, or even when he met people like me. He is a helluva guy, if you ask me, and if you're reading this, I guess you did.
To Dave, write some more and tell us more! I'd buy it and read it, no problem!
