Short Review: So usually you read any zombie book and they're stuck back in the 1990's with no internet/phones/ cool tech, but this zombie book said eff that, have way better tech than we do now, but somehow RadioShack is still in business..... I really liked Georgia, she was a straight shooter and was in the news to report the actual news which especially with what is going on in the world as the time i'm writing my review (covid-19), really hits home about how the news can make or break things. SPOILER: i think it's 100% fucked up that Georgia was killed, i really didn't like Shawn too much, he's a typical boy that really does just go poking shit with sticks for fun, so i doubt i'll read book 2 any time soon

This was interesting. It was a lot to unpack and once I got into it this was interesting. Set in the future after a major virus outbreak. I thought the concept is interesting- everyone has the Kellis-Amberlee virus and it becomes activated when one dies, gets bitten, or spontaneously converts. The virus is helpful in that it kills the cancer cells and other things. The problem is, once activated, people become zombies and require a head shot to die a 2nd time. Animals over 40# also are infected and the same things apply. I can't imagine a future where most don't have pets.
In this future, news is disseminated through bloggers. George (Georgia) is a Newsie (news and truth), her brother Shaun is an Irwin (likes danger), Buffy is a Fictional (stories). There are also Stewarts, Aunties). Together they run a blog/news site that gets chosen to follow the presidential campaign of Peter Ryman whose formative years were shaped by the outbreak.
I liked the writing, the characters, and the general story-line. There's a betrayal by someone close, trusted, and considered a friend. There's a conspiracy, murder. A major character dies in this. I do think this has a good solid end and was on the fence about reading the next. I did read some reviews regarding book 2 and certain things happen that I'm not crazy about, so the train stops at this one. I do recommend for those that like zombie stories.

I didn´t get much reading done the last two days, because I was in Hamburg, being part of the huge musical choir for the Martin Luther King musical. It´s been a whole lot of fun, but now I´m exhausted. So my plan for today is to take a walk at the Wadden Sea, catching up on your posts and, of course, to do a whole lot of reading.

I started my day off with another hour of listening to Into the Drowning Deep and during this hour the book turned towards "you´ve got to be kidding me" territory. Which was bound to happen, because all the characters are idiots.

This particular scene caused me to do a lot of eye rolling and headshaking:

I can only take a certain amount of sheer stupidity. And the crew is about to send out dolphins for a first contact mission and since my guess is that these dolphins will end up as mermaid fodder, I´m calling it quits right now.

DNF at 50%.

Good grief. Killer mermaids are about to invade the ship, but still the author has enough time to include a lesbian love story in the narrative.

I feel bad that I have to break it to these characters, but people, you don´t have time for this. What are these characters doing? I honestly don´t get it. I would haul ass if I would be in their situation and I most certainly wouldn´t get more and more stupid with every passing minute. 

And I just realized that I made an error in calculating my remaining listening time and shockingly enough, I´m not even halfway through this book. So I guess I have to wait for another 4-5 hours until everyone gets eaten. And tbh, I´m not sure if I can endure this book any longer. 

I´m sorry, but this book doesn´t make a whole lot of sense.

An entertainment company is sending out all those scientists with the objective to get a first, peaceful contact with the mermaids. So when one of these scientist wants to "blow these damn things out of the water" (because of reasons), a corporate-goon tells this person that she can get off the ship if she has that kind of attitude.

The very same company, though, has hired two big game hunters, for security reasons I guess, who clearly are on the ship to "blow these damn things out of the water" and they are not shy to tell everyone that this is their actual plan. And the guy from the company is totally fine with their behaviour.

So yeah,whatever. It´s actually not the only issue I have with this book. And I´m still waiting for the mermaids to eat every single one of these idiots.
