How to Declutter Your Home Before a Move

Despite all the possible benefits it brings you, decluttering may feel like a difficult task, especially right before you need to move house. The great news is that it doesn’t need to be,l as you can make the process faster and easier. Let’s find out how:

Get Motivated

Decluttering can be an emotionally charged and sometimes overwhelming experience, especially if you have never done that before. There is nothing wrong with looking for proper motivation before you get started. Remind yourself of how good it feels to free up space, save money, and make some money as you make a fresh start. You would be surprised to find how liberating it feels to get rid of items you don’t need anymore in your new home.

Start Early

One of the biggest mistakes people make when they start pre-move decluttering is that they don’t start early enough. You will have many more things than you could ever imagine going through, so depending on your home’s size, you may need to start months in advance before you move. That makes your decluttering process far less stressful and easier to manage.

Start With the Rooms and Items Least Used

You should start the decluttering process with the things you use least often. Focus on the rooms you use the least, and ensure you have plenty of time to go through everything until you have about half or a quarter left of anything you had in there. Start with your basement, garage or attic and look for a way to consider what items are of value and have a purpose in your new home. That way, by the time you reach the essential things, you will have the mindset to keep things manageable. You can pack the items you plan on keeping in plastic bins, handling things within your daily routines and around the rest of the house.

Don’t Be Sentimental

No matter what you do, you will go through items with emotional ties to you; that is just a fact of life. Try to focus on the present when you see an item that brings you down memory lane, as you need to focus on decluttering, so you will need to be a bit ruthless to make it work. Many people out there declutter on their own and tend to waste their time going through items and little knick-knacks tied to old memories. Don’t be one of those; focus on keeping things to a more manageable size and numbers. There will be a time for new memories and items you can keep, but for the moment, you need to focus on the job and cut away the things you don’t need.

Involve Your Children

Though this may take a bit longer, you will find things far easier if you involve your children in decluttering and have them handle their belongings. If you have the patience and time to allow for that, they will learn a valuable lesson about moving. They will develop the necessary emotional strength to handle decluttering later in their lives when the time arrives.

Schedule a Time for Decluttering

You should not schedule set times or periods to declutter daily, but two to three hours of this weekly is more than enough to get the ball rolling. Creating a routine where you do just that, and nothing else will help in the long run.

THE TAMBOURINE QUEEN by Debra Bradley and Barbara Shagrin
The Tambourine Queen - Deborah Bradley,Barbara Shagrin,I. Cenizal

Grace ignores a new girl at school. That night her parents tell her they are moving. She becomes the new girl at school. Grace sees a tambourine on the shelf at school going to grab it the same time a boy grabs it. The teacher intervenes but Grace says she wants to do something quiet. The next day she and the boy share the tambourine and become friends.

I enjoyed this book. It shows how one day Grace ignores someone, not meaning to be mean, but because she was interested in the tambourine and didn't want to share. Grace understood only after becoming the new girl how the other girl felt. She learned how to make new friends and how sharing helps with that.

I liked the rhyming of the story. It was fun. The illustrations were good. This is good for early readers as well as toddlers.

How to Move with a Pet Dog and Help them Adjust

Let’s face it – moving house is not a simple project. There are endless things to take care of, and all those errands could be overwhelming. However, no matter how busy you are, don’t forget to address the needs of your pet dog, as it will be much more difficult for your beloved pet to adjust.

To help your puppy get used to the change more manageably, try these five excellent moving tips:

  • Follow a routine – as a dog owner, you have already worked out a routine that you and your pet stick to daily. Walks, eating dinner and having a nap co-occur daily, forming your pet’s routine. To let your dog adjust to its new home smoothly, make sure you keep up with the same schedule as you usually do. It might make no sense to you, but even the slightest disruption of the routine can cause lots of stress to your pet, so try to stay on the same schedule. If you have just started arranging the kitchen or feel exhausted to go for a walk now, try to leave all aside and maintain your dog’s everyday lifestyle. Doing so goes a long way to minimise the stress of the change, as fewer things will be changing for your pet.

  • Prepare a dog-friendly space – once the movers are done unloading the van and have left your new place, you should first arrange space for your dog. Place its bed, blankets, toys and bowls so your puppy will feel at home right from the start. The smell of familiar objects will add a sense of security for your dog, thus allowing it to adjust faster to its new home. Even if you have to arrange the space temporarily, don’t postpone the task. Pack a bag with your dog’s essentials before leaving your old home to make things easier. This way, you can quickly find the puppy’s stuff without unpacking numerous boxes.

  • Pay attention to your pup – dogs need to feel loved by their humans, and when switching to a new home, it is more important than ever to show your affection. Whether you will take some time to play with your puppy or spend an extra minute to pet it, love and affection will relieve stress for the dog and yourself. Once the dog realises that it is still a top priority in your life, it will also figure out that nothing significant has changed and everything is ok.

  • Stay calm and patient – in the first couple of weeks at the new place; you may notice unusual behaviour of your dog – lots of barking or accidents inside the house. Such behaviour shouldn’t surprise you, as it is a natural reaction to the change. The best you can do here is to stay as patient as possible since losing your temper will undoubtedly prevent your pet from quickly adjusting to the new life. Once enough time has passed, this odd behaviour will disappear, and you and your puppy will feel at home again.

  • Don’t leave for too long – while the process of acclimating still lasts, try not to leave your dog alone for too long. If you have a task you can’t postpone in the first few days at the new place, try to take the dog with you when going out. If this is not an option, ask a close friend or someone your dog is familiar with to hang around with the pup until you return home. Just like the favourite toys bring the puppy a sense of security, so does your presence.

Count on these smart tips, and your dog will adjust to the new place before you know it.
