Halloween Bingo -- Supernatural -- I TOLD YOU SO!
The Haunting of Ashburn House - Darcy Coates

I read The Haunting of Ashburn House on 4 September 2017.

This gives me two more Bingos, center row vertically and bottom row horizontally.

But, I told you American Horror Story would be the last square called!

Reading progress update: I've read 60%.
The Haunting of Rookward House - Darcy Coates

It's funny, the story has better scares and a more solid backstory told through two time periods, but I just can't seem to like the protagonist, Guy, in this one at all.

The Haunting of Gillespie House - Darcy Coates

"That's not rats, I realized with a burst of horror. it's fingernails scratching at wood"

This book is perfectly spooky. Nothing with gore but it works with first sounds and later bits of dreams and an evil cult leader whose soul won't die.

Yeah... I'm going to be checking out this author's backlist!

The Duke of Danger (The Untouchables) by Darcy Burke
The Duke of Danger (The Untouchables Book 6) - Darcy Burke

His reputation precedes him, but it's his heart that tortures him.  Will it lead to his undoing or become his saving grace?  One moment changed a man's life.  One choice set in motion a chain of events that connected the lives of three people forever.  Out of greed, guilt and violence comes a romance as passionate as it is heartbreaking.  Lionel and Emmaline are unwitting pawns in an ugly conspiracy set in motion by a dangerous man.  When the tide turns in their favor, will they survive the revelations it brings with it? Duke of Danger is an exciting twist of fate romance.  It appeals to the romantic while feeding a need for adventure and seducing with passion.  A big story in a tiny package.

The Haunting of Blackwood House
The Haunting of Blackwood House - Darcy Coates

I don't even know where to start.

This wouldn't have been as bad a book, but the main character Mara was one of the most insufferable characters I've encountered in a book in a long time. She was, to put it succinctly, a brat. I think she was supposed to be portrayed as a strong, independent woman, but instead she came off as a rigid, stubborn, and rude woman who treated her boyfriend (and others) like crap, and absolutely would not entertain any idea or opinion if it even slight hinted at anything supernatural going on. Even when she was directly confronted with paranormal activity, she would not budge. Yes, she had her reasons due to her past, but still.

She made many choices, that had I not been reading on my kindle, the book would have met with the wall multiple times. For example: She has no electricity in her new house, and her phone battery goes dead. Instead of asking her boyfriend, Neil, to charge it in his car, or maybe take it to work or to his house to charge it, she just doesn't tell him about it. She doesn't want to worry him, and she doesn't want to rely on him for anything. I mean anything. The slightest little thing he tries to buy her or help her with, and she flies off the handle at him. She became a tiny, tiny bit more likeable in the last 20% or so, but by then it was too little, far too late.

Also, literally any choice a rational person would make after being placed in the same situations as Mara was, Mara would make the exact opposite. It was so frustrating.

Not that Neil's much better. He's literally Too Perfect. Handsome and muscular, he loves Mara to distraction, and I could never quite figure out why. He was also pretty bland and boring.

Needless to say, I didn't buy into their relationship at all.

And if I can find the main characters likeable in any way, I'm not going to care too much about the story.
