KILLERS OF THE FLOWER MOON: THE OSAGE MURDERS AND THE BIRTH OF THE FBI by David Grann
Killers of the Flower Moon: The Osage Murders and the Birth of the FBI - David Grann

Interesting book on an event that is never taught in school.  I especially liked when the investigation is taken over by the FBI.  I was appalled by the murders.  The Osage were intelligent when negotiating with the government and got the mineral rights to their lands.  White man greed once again destroys lives and the Osage community because of oil.  I also liked the last part as the reporter is going over the story and discovers that the four years of terror started long before those years and lasted longer with many more men and women who should have been arrested and prosecuted.  Mr. Grann put a human face to the people whose lives were affected and the actions of those who were to protect the Osage cannot be justified.  Shameful!  A good read.

August: Osage County
August: Osage County - Tracy Letts BLUF: Play about a self-destructing family.

Not convinced? Here is the break down of characters (note: daughters not in age order)

Father – drunk
Mother – drug abuser
Daughter 1 – not good enough
Daughter 2 – control freak
Daughter 3 – depressed & naive
Granddaughter – drug user
Grandson – waste of life

The whole dysfunctional family concept is not entertaining to me. At all. I get enough crazy between my family and the hubby’s, I don’t need to read about too.

This play did not let up the arguments, cheap jabs at each other, or any of the other punches a family can throw. If that’s not enough, you get incestual hints and pedophiles too.

Act I: Relationship background & Beverly ventures off
Act II: Bev is found and put to rest
Act III: General family drama

In the end, I understand that this play is a social commentary, but it’s not my kind of read (or watch..).

August: Osage County
August: Osage County - Tracy Letts Tragic and hilarious. The perfect mix of dark humor and real drama -- or at least energized conflict (if that makes sense). It's amazing how the many characters stand apart on the page. Great dialog, some beautiful lines, and satisfying homages to other plays (Long Day's Journey... being the most obvious).

August: Osage County - Tracy Letts Extravagantly melodramatic and full of withering, viciously funny dialogue, Letts' play reminded me at least in tone more of Albee and Pinter than O'Neill (who, let's face it, had the long and melodramatic down pat but lacked the "funny").

A family with let's say some issues convenes after the father's disappearance, and over the course of a few nights rip into one another, reveal, repress. You know, family. I was very entertained by the read, and found myself thoroughly enmeshed in the emotional trials of Barbara (the eldest daughter)--and she has a moment, near play's end, that was truly heart-breaking.

I'd love to see this live. It's dynamic on the page, all red meat and rage (as my pal Jeff and I note in the comments). But I am curious why the reviews have been so singularly effusive, calling it the best new play in years.... Maybe. Maybe? Really? It's very good, but...
