Ham-Fistedness: "Cinco Esquinas" by Mario Vargas Llosa
Cinco Esquinas (HISPANICA) - Mario Vargas Llosa

(Original Review, 2016-03-05)

I'm really glad that Mario Vargas Llosa's “Cinco Esquinas” wasn't the first of his books that I've read or I'd have abandoned his work forever. An unbidden, recurring image of him hunched over his keyboard, lickerish and drooling, haunted me as I read what were surely his pollution’s nocturnes about the room-temp romps of a pair of married, fabulously wealthy, gorgeous best girlfriends, all the throbbier for the perils posed by the Fujimori regime.

Got this in a grab bag
Hawkeye (2016-2018) #14 - Kelly Thompson,Leonardo Romero,Julian Tedesco

It had a foil cover, and I loved it.

But I figured what's the point if I don't read it, and I'd forgotten how good this series was.    It's as charming and funny as the main character, and the other Hawkeye isn't too shabby either.   I think I like the female Hawkeye a little more at this point, but she's got an unfair advantage: this series is amazing.

Loving this series
The Punisher (2016-2018) #227 - Matthew Rosenberg,Stefano Landini,Clayton Crain

This series continues to be spectacular.

I read this a month ago, while I was crazy busy with classes, but it's pretty much Punisher and Black Widow against the world which I needed more than I knew!

No crazy about this storyline
Champions (2016-) #26 - Sean Izaakse,Jim Zub,Paul Laurence Dunbar

Looks like it'll be a longer arc.   Lack of emphasis on Viv combined with the Weirdworld fantasy storyline aren't really engaging me.   Then again, I'm psyched that the writer isn't afraid of doing something different.

I've been happy with the writer as far as characterization goes and have liked his storylines better than this.   Snowguard isn't my favorite newcomer to the Champions, but she hasn't been a deal breaker either, and I think I just needed to get used to her.   She doesn't annoy me, and I'm liking her a little more the more I read her.

That being said, I'll stick it out, and hope the next storyline is more to my liking.   It's not horrible, it's just not my jam.
