NetGalley November #17
Once Upon a Highland Christmas - Sue-Ellen Welfonder

*Book source ~ NetGalley

When Archibald MacNab decrees there will be no Christmas at Duncreag, Captain of the Guard Grim Mackintosh and once-captive-now-free Breena O’Doherty try to change his mind. But the old laird is stubborn as a mule, so Grim comes up with another plan, one he needs Breena’s help implementing. Breena has a plan of her own and she hopes Grim will be receptive. It is the time of Christmas miracles, after all.

This is such a sweet historical romance. And it’s a Christmas one, too! Grim and Breena are just adorable. They like each other, but they each think the other isn’t interested. This type of plot device can be kinda hokey if not done skillfully, but here it works. I could have done without the surprise twist towards the end. It made me roll my eyes. But the rest of it is a great read.

Ending sucks
Between Friends (Friends with Benefits) - Vristen Pierce

*Book source ~ NetGalley

After Stacy Washington’s boyfriend dumps her for being too boring she decides it’s time to become a bit wild. Picking up strange men and having one-night stands qualifies as sufficiently wild in her good girl eyes, so that’s her plan. And she’s determined to make sure her plan succeeds.

This is a decently written story, but there’s not much too it besides wild sex with two different guys. Stacy’s job is thrown into the mix in an attempt to beef up the story, but it’s mostly about the sex Stacy has with Justin and then with Evan and then with them both. Nothing wrong with that. The sex scenes are plenty hot and steamy. My problem came at the end of the story. Stacy turns into a total and complete twat. I was high fiving her up until the end. Talk about a douchebag. I can’t stand her now and I have no intention of reading any more of her story. She can eat shit and die. The end.

Extreme naughtiness in this retelling
Wuthering Nights: An Erotic Retelling of Wuthering Heights - I. J. Miller

*Book source ~ A review copy was provided in exchange for an honest review.

Wuthering Nights is a retelling of the classic Wuthering Heights but with erotica added to it.

I will start by saying I have read Wuthering Heights and I hated it. The characters were detestable, the plot crappy and I finished it only so I could say I had read it. When I saw this retelling of the story but with erotica added, it had been many years since I read the original, so I decided to give it a go. From what I remember, Miller does a good job of retelling Brontë’s book very well. The characters are still detestable and the plot ridiculous, but I kept reading because I wanted to see what other naughtiness would be added to the story. And naughtiness there definitely is! While Heathcliff is still a total asshat I did enjoy the things the author had him doing as far as BDSM goes. They seemed completely in character with a jerkwad like him. Catherine and the other women in this story panting after Heathcliff are total twats. I especially hate Catherine, spoiled, selfish, self-centered, little bitch that she is. Yeah, I remember these characters from the original. Love story?! I think not! There is no love in any of the relationships in this or the original. Obsession is more the word I would use, not love. Ugh! Anyway, the erotica is skillfully woven into the fabric of the story so it doesn’t seem out of place or shoehorned in for dramatic effect.

If you are the type of person who is faithful to the original then you’ll probably hate this story. If you’re looking for a classic retelling with much naughtiness added then this should fit the bill nicely.
