Death, Taxes, and Cheap Sunglasses (Tara Holloway, #8)
Death, Taxes, and Cheap Sunglasses - Diane Kelly

It's been awhile since I picked up a Tara Holloway novel, and I don't know why - they're really fun and better built than your average cozy.  Needing to read a book where the character had to be good with a gun was just the motivation I needed to get back into the series.

In this book Tara is investigating an email scam, a Facebook scam, and two non-profits that might not really be non-profits; one of these involved an animal sanctuary, and up-front, I skimmed a lot when this story line came forward, although the wrap up of it was awesome.  Running through the whole of the story is her boyfriend and best friend (an IRS and DEA agent respectively) going deep undercover against the Mexican drug cartel.

While Tara's investigations are relatively lightweight and suffuse the storyline with humour, the cartel storyline is not light.  Kelly has done her research and, while she has a tendency to overshare that research with readers sometimes, here it's relevant, timely and the perfect hook for setting the level of danger involved.  Tara contributes once or twice, but is mostly in the dark about what's going on until the end.  And the end is unbelievably tense for a cozy and the happy ending doesn't come without scars and baggage.

My biggest complaint about the book is the level of internal dialog the reader has to put up with as Tara agonises over Nick's safety and whether or not he's alive.  There was just a little too much of it and it became tedious.  Otherwise, a great read and I'm glad I already have the next one ready to go.

Pete the Cat and His Magic Sunglasses
Pete the Cat and His Magic Sunglasses - James Dean

Pete the Cat and His Magic Sunglasses is another book by James Dean that captivates readers. Things do go as planned for Pete this time and he's all grumpy. However, when he runs into a friend his frown is turned upside down with a pair of sunglasses. The day looks a lot happier with his new sunglasses. When he comes across another friend having a bad day, he can't wait to share his sunglasses!  I feel this book is great to use with grades kindergarten to 4th grade. It promotes a positive attitude and helping others to do the same. I firmly believe you can choose to be happy and have a good day.  I would definitely use this book in my future classroom. After reading the book, I would ask the students how they could change things around if they or a friend are having a grumpy bad day. I would have them break them up into small groups and have them make a card or picture for someone in class (assigned by teacher so everyone gets one) to make their day seem a little brighter.

Pete the Cat and His Magic Sunglasses - James Dean

Pete the Cat and HIs Magic Sunglasses is such a good book for young readers. I really love the whole Pete the Cat series. In this book, Pete is grumpy until he discovers some cool sunglasses that makes him suddenly feel positive and happy. When he runs into his other friends that are feeling down as well, he lets them try the magical sunglasses and they also become happy. I feel as if this book promotes sharing and helping friends out when they are sad. I would use this book anywhere from kindergarten to 2nd or 3rd grade.

Pete the Cat: Twinkle, Twinkle, Little Star - James Dean

Pete the Cat books are great with their nice sing-song rhythm and wonderful illustrations! These books would be wonderful to implement into a first grade classroom because of their interactive little songs everyone in the class could sing along with and there are multiple opportunities for the teacher to ask students to predict what might happen next in the book. There are also numerous Pete the Cat read along/sing along videos available on YouTube for educators to use as an option when reading these books as well. After reading these books, everyone will fall in love with Pete and will be singing his funky songs all day long!
