The Gamekeeper's Lady by Ann Lethbridge
The Gamekeeper's Lady - Ann Lethbridge

Lord Robert Mountford has a bad habit of hopping into bed with flirtatious married women, but he steers clear of innocent virgins. Unfortunately, one catches him alone and, mistaking him for his twin brother, falsely accuses him of trying to kiss her. He refuses to marry her and is ostracized by everyone he knows. Even his own father kicks him out.

Three years later, Robert has managed to land a position as an assistant gamekeeper at Wynchwood estate, hiding his true identity as best he can. Frederica Bracewell, the young lady of the house, may prove to be his undoing. Sparks fly between the two of them as Robert helps Frederica with her secret project, drawing local wildlife and adding to her art portfolio so that she can eventually run away to Italy and become an artist.

I knew from the start that I probably wasn't going to like this very much. The book began with the hero naked in bed after having had sex with another man's wife. The woman, Maggie, started trying to match him up with her niece before the two of them had even gotten dressed. The whole thing repulsed me. Shortly after that, Robert was kicked out by his father for not marrying the young lady who said he'd kissed her, and then there was a "three years later" time jump.

Frederica was mistreated by her uncle, frequently punished just for being left-handed, and constantly interrupted because of her stutter. I generally like downtrodden heroines because it's fun seeing them come into their own, but I got so frustrated with both her and Robert that I just couldn't root for them. They were both idiots. When they met, it was instant physical attraction. Also, Frederica was happy because Robert didn't seem to take issue with either her left-handedness or her stutter.

If I remember right, the book had two sex scenes, and the first one happened after Frederica and Robert had spoken to each other maybe three times. Although Robert had just reminded her that he could be fired for letting her into his house alone at night, he for some reason agreed to model for her nude (or nearly nude? I wasn't entirely sure). One thing led to another and, boom, sex scene. Frederica lied and said she wasn't a virgin, which I guess prompted Robert to decide it was okay to risk the best job he'd managed to find in three years.

These characters were so very stupid.

Anyway, in the last third of the book, multiple characters revealed that they weren't who they appeared to be, and the sudden complications at least made things interesting, even though I didn't enjoy the romance. Maggie, the woman Robert was in bed with at the beginning of the book, showed up again. It was awkward, but not quite as bad as I'd expected.

The ending was...terrible. It was like most of the characters experienced personality transplants. Frederica and Robert had doubts about each other that were understandable considering that neither one of them really knew each other very well, but that made it very difficult to believe in their happy ending. Which was very, very happy, with everything wrapping up neatly.

I looked at the summaries of the other books in the series. Looks like Charles, Robert's twin, is the hero of the next book, Robert's friend John is the hero of the third, and the fourth features characters I don't think appeared in this book at all. I have no interest in reading any of them.

Dare To Resist (Dare Nation #1) - Carly Phillips

Austin is not just a former football player, he is a sports agent in his own right.  He is also a devoted family man despite the player reputation.  He cares enough to give a kidney - that shows how much his family means to him.

Quinn is excited to work for such a sports legend.  She knows she will learn much, and is actually shocked to be hired.  When the temptaion of her boss gets harder, she is not sure she can resist.  Until he needs her even more......

There are so many things I want to tell you about this story.  I am not a spoiler though, so here it is: read the book.  This was just really romance goodness from start to finish.  The attraction was strong with heat, that turned up rather quickly.  The main characters were passionate and caring. The pace was not too slow, but pretty steady.  Overall a great book to grab and read. I couldn't put this down!  I give this a 5/5 Kitty's Paws UP!

Lights! Camera! Clueless!

Liam Wright is Hollywood’s golden boy and at the top of the A-list.

But what he doesn’t know about life… Well, it could fill his very large Hollywood mansion. Thankfully, he’s got Shelby Carter in his world to keep him—and his house—camera-ready. Part confidante, part master chef, Shelby is his best friend and the only one who knows the real Liam.

Pampered, pretty, and often puzzled, Liam and his antics keep her on her toes, and there is never a dull moment living with him.

Until one day, Liam sees her as more…and he wants her to see him for the man he can be. The man he wants to be.

For her.

Is Liam up for the part?

Excerpt:

I filled the sink beside her with warm water, planning on soaking her feet and then bandaging them.

“The dress,” she whispered.

I groaned. I didn’t care about the bloody dress. But I knew she did.

“Take it off, then.”

“Right here?”

“Shelby, I’ve seen you in a bathing suit. I think I can handle your underwear.”

“Um—” Chuckling, I shrugged out of my jacket and unbuttoned my shirt, yanking it off, leaving me in my undershirt.

“You can put this on.” I wrapped my arm around her. “Come on, I’ll help you.”

Gently, I set her on the floor, my eyes following her hand as she pulled down the hidden zipper on her dress. The deep-red gown pooled at her feet, and I swallowed when I saw what was hiding underneath the satin.

Her bathing suit, I could handle. This, I wasn’t sure about. Red. Lacy. Strapless. A bustier.   My gaze drifted downward. Tiny scraps of fabric tied at her hips in the same shade of red, leaving a tantalizing strip of soft flesh between the bustier and her underwear. A strip I wanted to lick. And the underwear…tiny straps with bows that led to… I shut my eyes as the room became far too small and far too hot. All the blood in my body was now pooled in one place. My hard, aching cock.

Which was at that very moment trying to punch its way out of my pants to get to that red lace. Bugger. Shit. Damn. I gulped in air. Tried to think of anything else. Puppies. Worms. Everett in his underwear. Anything but the warm, red-lace-wearing woman in front of me. Who was in pain and needed me to look after her. Not lift her back onto the counter and fuck her until she screamed my name. At least once. Three or four times, preferably. Her voice broke through my thoughts.

“Liam?”

I blinked at her and handed her my shirt. I needed to rein myself in. “Put this on, Shelby, please.”

With downcast eyes, she did as I asked. I realized she thought I wanted her to cover up for a different reason than I needed her to cover up. I cupped her cheek.

“Hey.”

Her hesitant gaze met mine.

I covered her mouth with my lips, yanking her close. I pulled her hips against mine so she knew how she was affecting me. Her eyes flew open, meeting mine that were already staring at her—trying to convey a hard message.

I smiled against her lips. “Just for now, Beaker. Or your feet won’t be the only thing that’s sore.”

I set her back on the counter, keeping my eyes averted. She hissed in pain as I placed her feet in the warm water. I grimaced in understanding. “Sorry. Now, where can I find bandages?”

“My bathroom has a first aid kit. Left cupboard by the vanity.”

“Okay, stay here.”

“Where else am I gonna go?”

I hesitated. “I’m not gonna have to touch…other things to get to the kit thing, am I?”

She smirked. “Other things, Liam?”

I rubbed the back of my neck. “Um…your girl…things, Shelby?”

“No, you’re quite safe.” She winked. “Just make sure you open the left cupboard. Not the right.”

“Right.”

“No, left.”

“Bloody hell, don’t confuse me! I don’t have a lot of blood in that particular head right now!”

Her amusement followed me down the hall. It was music to my ears.

My rating: 4 of 5 stars

Liam is a celebrity among the players in Hollywood. He is known as Pampered, pretty, and often puzzled. Until he had Shelby as an assistant he had trust issues as well. Now he had people around him that he feels comfortable with. And maybe something more......

Shelby has already had a past with a man out of control. She is looking to heal, not find someone new. Being close to her brother & working for Liam is a decent life. Even if it has its lonely moments.

This book was a sweet and sexy play on a slow burn. I like the characters in their own right. This was a premise that I love. I like when best friends can be more. I loved that the MC's in this were basically best friends and have that trust and cozy way they rely on one another. Lots of little surprises throughout the book, but I found them a delight.

ARC REVIEW The Librarian's Vampire Assistant book 4 by Mimi Jean Pamfiloff

The Librarian's Vampire Assistant, book #4

The Librarian's Vampire Assistant (The Librarian's Vampire Assistant #4)

From New York Times Bestseller Mimi Jean Pamfiloff comes a snarky Mystery with a side dish of Romance and two sprinkles of chaos, THE LIBRARIAN’S VAMPIRE ASSISTANT, Book Four. (Yep! These books are STANDALONES. But the more you read, the merrier!)

SHE’S MINE. BUT HAS SHE FORGOTTEN?

A crazy vampire has stolen my librarian. And if that’s not bad enough, it is my fault. Because I, too, am an ancient, deadly vampire, and it was my job to protect her. I failed.

Now, just as I have reason to hope I will get her back, the situation turns into the biggest mystery of my existence.

Apparently, this evil vampire has brainwashed her into thinking she belongs with him. I do not know how. I do not know why. But I will get to the bottom of this and win her back.

Because I am the motherf*!$%ing librarian’s vampire assistant, and she belongs to me. Or, at least she used to?

Well that just happened. It's a surprising turn of events for Michael that will have you yelling at your book. I kept repeating my MJP mantra "Nothing is as it seems", because really Mimi likes to screw with us that way and then blame it on the characters (I say in a tongue in cheek manner).
In all honesty Michael's dated almost humourless attitude is hysterical and he's so oblivious at times it makes his first person narration even better.
This is technically not a cliffhanger but it's also not a HEA, yet, it does leave a wide open ending for the next book, squeee! I loved this book it is my favorite out of the series so far. Mimi will have you laughing out loud and will have you cursing at Michael, Mr. Nice....Lula... well just about everyone; it's all in good fun and one hell of a story. I stayed up half the night reading it I couldn't put it down.
